Balanced to the point of being elegant, The Barrel is one of the finest blended whisky to ever come out of Japan. A blending of over 100 different constituent whiskies including both malt and grain offerings aged in bourbon barrels, sherry butts and refill hogsheads it delivers a complex aroma and flavour that brings new tones to light with every sip. While baby skin smooth and named The Barrel, it is bottled at 51.4% ABV so deserving of respect. If you enjoy whisky with great depth of character and subtle spiciness without rough edges, then this is a must-try neat or with just a splash.

    Amazing whiskey.

      Amazing Pollywaffl

  • It’s not for everybody, but I did not mind it.

  • Tried this on few shots. Great whiskey.

  • +8

It's not a bad drop. You could pick this up in Japan in supermarkets and 7-11's for $25-$27 as recently as two years back, would love to be buying at that price

    • +3

      Thank you OP, got one.

    • +9

I remember picking up a 700ml bottle of Tory's for $15 at 7-11! This was in 2018. Man I wish convenient stores in Aus were the same as in Japan. The variety, quality and price can't be beaten.

      • +3

yeah the 7-11 here is so sad compared to Japan. Lawson is also good, because they serve fried chicken all day everyday.

    • +1

Me, last time I was there: "$30? It's a bit dear, might just grab two"

      • +2

Checking Trail Wallet early 2018, looks like I spent $77 (Tax free) for two bottles of Nikka from the Barrel, a Suntory Yellow label and the return metro tickets. Cheers for the throwback.

I live in Japan. It's no longer that price , around 5000Yen now, roughly $60-$70AUD.
      JW -Red is $12
      Jim Beam - $16
      Yamazaki Single Malt NAS $120

      Still significantly cheaper than Aus

    • Yea and a bottle of yamazaki was like $40 a few years back… it's just demand and supply. Japanese whiskey got popular and demand went through the roof. I went to the yamazaki factory and they didn't even have any for sale even if you wanted to

  • One of my favourites, recommend for any collection

  • Not sure if this price is good but this is a great whisky

  • +4

This is a good whisky but just be aware that

Nikka from the Barrel have the following disclaimer: “This product does not meet all the criteria of ‘Japanese whisky ‘ defined by the Japan Spirits & Liqueur Makers Association.”

    https://www.masterofmalt.com/blog/post/new-regulations-mean-…

Most probably it's made from imported whisky and not distilled in Japan

I'd pay local Japanese price for this when in Japan but not the premium that Japanese whisky commands

      Nikka from the Nevis

  • Am I right in saying the Master of Malt has this for $67.1 ? I’ve noticed their prices are far cheaper than the major outlets, is there some hidden fee that is applied later ?

    • +3

      shipping

      • +1

Yes, I just tested it out, delivery was $39.59. That changes the price a lot ! Thank you.

    • +2

It’s an overseas site so doesn’t include GST or import duties

  • +1

remember this is only 500ml but its pretty great - i just dont remember it being this expensive

  • Had me at sherry butts.

    • You just don’t want to own up to the ‘baby skin smooth’.

  • +2

Wasn't a fan of this particular whisky..I found it really rough. I did drink it neat though.

    • +2

I find a splash of water helps

    • +1

Found this whisky when opened new, needs to breathe for a bit before consuming.

      • +3

Agree, found it very harsh initially (I drink neat too).

After a a week or so and a few drams it settled down nicely.

I still rate Nikka Coffey Malt way higher than it though.

        • Nikka Coffey Malt

and the Nikka Pure Malt, a staple on my shelf.

      • That's probably what I did wrong. Still plenty left so I'll have to do that next time.

    • Same here. Found the Hakushu super rough too. I feel these are all overrated compared to actual proper scotch.

    • +1

Consume a few drams and come back in a couple months. It dies down enough to become a very nice straight sipper.

  • +4

I remember couple of years ago this was $50 bucks, no one was touching it…

2 soda : 1 whisky ratio with soda water and slice of lemon. Epic Highball

    • +3

Don’t lowball me on the whisky

  • +2

    That name LMAO

    • +1

Can only imagine going into a bar and saying "Nikka please!"

    • I’ve seen this photoshopped before with ‘g’s and “from the hood” instead of “from the barrel”. I didn’t know it was a real whiskey.

  • $82 on catch

    • +1

Damn, I didn’t see that. Good spot.

  • +2

    Has ethanol

  • -1

Goes well with coke thumbs up

    • +1

      It actually does.

I make something called an American Ninja - Japanese whisky (sometimes Makers Mark), homemade umeshu and Coke over a slab of ice in an old fashioned glass.

  • -5

Not a bargain, there are better whiskeys for this price range.

  • Could be wrong but isn’t this the same thing? $67ish

    https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/nikka/nikka-whisky-fro…

    Edit: Only $40 shipping lol.

    • +1

Yeah. And import duty and taxes on top

      • Ouch! Lets get a group buy going to make it worth it ;)

        • +1

Nah, it will never be worth it. You only buy from MM if it's a hard to find bottle.

Just buy NFTB locally for $85.

  • +1

$80 at Nicks although no free delivery for 1 bottle.

  • Shows as 90.47 for me
