Trade Up? Buy Outright? Switch Providers?

Hi all

Currently using a Samsung Galaxy S20FE 5G on Optus. I'm on one of the last plans that had a trade up option, where you can pay $149 and get a (better) phone and a new 24/36 month plan.

Looking to switch back to an iPhone as my work and home life revolves around Mac now. Either the 13 Pro or Pro Max.

I can do one of the following:

  • trade up, pay $149 and get into a new phone & plan, current plan is about $50/month with 100GB data, I use most of it

  • ditch Optus completely and pay out the rest of the phone value which is about $520, sell my Samsung to cover most of that and look for either an outright bargain or a better plan/pricing with a different provider

I can claim about 50% of the phone cost on tax (about half personal and half work) but not the plan as my employer covers this.

Any thoughts on what would be best?

  • If your work is paying the bill why not go for this? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/652749

    • That looks pretty awesome, actually. The only thing that worries me is that I'm in a regional area and am unsure of how good/poor Vodafone is. Looks like this deal isn't subject to their network satisfaction guarantee, which is a bit of a worry?

      • +1

Yeah no network guarantee. Could always get a prepaid sim to test it out in advance. My work pays the bill but not the device, so this worked out really well for me.

        • Good idea. My father in law lives close by and he needs a new phone so might get him a Vodafone SIM and see what happens.
