Does anyone here regret getting an Oculus Quest 2?

So, I've been thinking about getting an Oculus Quest 2 (I'm in melbourne if you're interested in selling fyi!) and I was wondering if it's worth buying?

To provide some context, I briefly had a PSVR and it kind of blew my mind at the time, but there were a few issues with it that made me decide to sell it:

  • it was really pixelated and the resolution wasn't all that great.
  • the move controls were shocking in terms of accuracy.
  • i would get quite motion sick, although I've heard this is in part because of the terrible resolution on the PSVR.

What's your experience been with the headset? Was it worth the purchase for you personally?

Comments

  • Do you get travel sickness?

    • Oh right, probably should have mentioned this as well!

      Yes, the PSVR did make me quite sick at times, although I've heard it's not as bad with oculus quest 2 because of increase resolution?

  • +5

    Greatest tech purchase of my life.

    • +1

      What is your main use?

      • +5

        Gaming, meditation/relaxation, watching media and a little virtual desktop with my gaming PC.

        I take it on work trips to unwind in the hotel before bed.

        Have had it for a year and I'm still in awe of the various experiences, still get giddy when it's time to play.

  • +2

    Take ginger if you get VR sickness, it really helps. I usually get motion sickness in first-person games on a TV, but eating a piece of ginger beforehand, I can sit through VR for an hour or so without feeling anything.

  • I'm considering getting it, but I'm a bit concerned that it won't be able to play more intensive games without connecting to a pc. It doesn't come with a the link cable also which costs extra.

    • +2

      The link cable is just a 5m USB-C to USB-C cable. The official one is a rip off at $120 but I think they're unofficial ones at ~$30
      You can also go wireless with Oculus Air Link if you're home network is up to scratch

    • +1

      Connecting it to a beefy pc*
      Gonna have bad times trying to run it on anything less than a 1060

      • Although I run mixed reality , i am on an egpu setup with gtx960 2gb. beat saber is fine, Star Wars Squadrons playable on low. But 3D 360 videos are terrible. So I second beefy pc if you want everything to work

  • +1

    I purchased prepared that if i didnt love it, i could sell it second-hand and consider the difference in what i got for it the cost of renting it to have a go.

    Fortunately I use Beat Saber and Pistol Whip quite a bit, and have enjoyed several games - incl Moss, Vader Immortal, I Expect You to Die and Red Matter, enough, that on a cost per hour of entertainment, I already got my money's worth and i continue to use it

    Controls are very good. Am not prone to motion sickness so not a good test case for that. I do wear glasses and bought some prescription lenses online that make it a lot more usable for me.

    Past deals also have quite a few comments on both the games and the headset

    Motion sickness is usually caused/exacerbated by inconsistent frame times rather than screen resolution. Although you can refer to this a temporal resolution.

    • I'm not sure if that's the case, because PSVR is 120hz, while oculus quest is I think 90hz - yet people report less motion sickness on the oculus quest, so I'm assuming it's resolution.

      • +2

        It might be 120Hz but can the game maintain that framerate? I suspect AAA titles would have trouble
        I would guess another factor is accuracy in tracking head motion

        • Apparently it also not having a wire attached makes a big difference as well. What VR setup do you have?

          • @dottjt: I have a Oculus DK2 and a HTC Vive Cosmos. I’m considering selling the Vive and picking up the Quest 2 though. Setting the Vive is a pain but once setup it’s pretty good.

  • I used my oculus quest 1 every day for the first few weeks. It gets pulled out when I have people around, otherwise it sits in its case.
    I do like it, but the thought of having to clear some space, boot it up, do all the updates and then play just makes me tired and hop onto the pc instead.

    I say go for it. If you don't like it you can always sell it.

  • Not worth it for me personally, only reason I moved on from the CV1 was because there was going to be exlcusives moving forward. What I found unnacceptable is despite being a few years newer, there was significant downgrades from both the CV1 and the quest 1. The biggest ones were:
    1. Switched from OLED to IPS, which pretty much ruined any dark games
    2. Got rid of the fantastic included headphones on the CV1 that were easily worth $100-150 in favour of something that sounded $10 worth.

  • how good is it to use as a monitor / watch movie? also considering one but i get bored of games easily

    • +1

      For movies it's pretty awesome, it's literally like watching in a cinema. We were talking about that in a previous thread

  • No regrets here, however there aren't that many long form game experiences on the Quest directly. Most of them are more like party games/short experiences. If you have a gaming PC however, then it's definitely the best value for money!

    • What PCVR games are worth playing? I've only looked at Oculus ones

      • +2

        Heaps! Skyrim VR, Half-Life Alyx, Lone Echo, Asgard's Wrath, Townsmen VR, Everslaught, No Man's Sky, Star Wars: Squadrons, Elite: Dangerous, Hellblade, Edge of Nowhere, Brass Tactics, From Other Suns, Final Assault, Vox Machinae, Vertigo Remastered just to name a few.

        And that's not even including the games that exist on Quest that are MUCH better on PC (Pavlov, Zero Caliber, Blade & Sorcery, Walking Dead, etc).

        • Thanks for the list!

  • +1

    another suggest to ease the motion sickness: if the game has the option to, turn off “Motion Blur”

  • +2

    Run a fan in the room, the fresh air on your face does 3 things.

    A/ it lets you orientate yourself as you remember where the fan was.

    B/ it helps alleviate sweating

    C/ it helps alleviate motion sickness

  • If you have a good pc (2070 or 3060 and above) its practically a must buy for me

    • What games do you recommend for PC?

      • +1

        HL:Alyx

  • Can you use it for NVIDIA GEOFORCE NOW Cloud Gaming?

    • No, GFN does not stream Oculus / steam VR titles.

  • +1

    I’ve owned most iterations of oculus.
    * original oculus rift
    * oculus rift S
    * oculus quest 2
    I didn’t bother with the go or quest 1 because they didn’t seem ready for prime time.
    The quest 2 has amazing resolution, considering the price and even compared to most other headsets.

    Now it will vary from game to game depending on the settings, but generally the graphics are very good at not pixelated - again providing decent optimisation and AA applied.

    As for motion sickness it varies from person to person, but for me who is smack bang in the middle: I can get motion sickness with the wrong game or configuration, but I can also stand many games for 30-60 minutes just fine, here’s my run down.

    Greatest games for comfort;
    * robo recall
    * pistol whip
    * yuki
    * synth rider
    * beat saber
    * sports scramble
    * racket NX

    Medium games, can tolerate for some time with caution:
    * Sairento VR
    * medal of honour above and beyond (PCVR)
    * sniper elite VR
    * blade and sorcery
    * warplanes WW1

    Worst games I’ve tried, and given up due to sickness:
    * Skyrim (PCVR)
    * redout (PCVR)
    * thumper

    Basically there’s a pattern, games that are rushed ports of PC games without much redesign for VR tend to cause issues.

    Games that are designed for VR from the get go, especially the quest are very tolerable.
    Obviously within that correct games that have a lot of movement like racing I can only tolerate for a while.

    Do I regret it? Hell no

    • i've only just gotten the quest and want to try skyrim VR( with one of the wabbajack VR mod packs). FO4VR motion is making me a little sick. Have you tried the natural locomotion app on steam? is it worth it?

  • Oculus 2 user here - Happy with the purchase.
    Similar experience as most people here - slight motion sickness. Kids play it more than I do.
    I'm stuck now playing Ragnarok https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3dah87xq_E
    Few of the songs are fantastic.
    I'm almost considering to buy a second one to play against my kids now that Amazon has $100 credit on them.

  • I was close to buying during the $100 Amazon promo but ultimately I decided against it. I quite enjoyed PSVR but I returned my Rift S after a day as I was really disappointed with what I experienced with it combined with a 2070s. I now have a much beefier 3080/5800x system but I don't think there's been that much improvement. I think I'll wait for the pro.

    • I actually just got the Oculus Quest 2 and have had it for a week and I love it!

      Not having wires attached and the comfort/freedom with that, really cannot be understated in terms of increasing immersion.

  • No, the porn has been Ammmmmaaazing!

  • the resolution and the graphics is so bad on the oculus quest 2…

    Going from gaming on ps5 on LG Oled 4K to the oculus is like going back 20 years in graphics…

    • Haha I'm playing ps6 in the quest 2..pretty amazing.

      Using the emulator and future app
