LED Wireless Pendants for The Kitchen

Hi all,

Question for the OZB community please. Due to timber blocking the way for cables to be run through a particular part of the kitchen, I'm unable to install a couple of pendants above a kitchen benchtop. Seeking to buy "wireless/remote controlled" LED pendants that are battery operated. Have come across one brand "its exciting lighting" that ships them from the USA on Amazon (approx $100ea) however reaching out to see if anyone has any recommendations or solutions for kitchen pendants or perhaps even an LED bar that is suitable for mounting to a ceiling above a kitchen bench. Thank you in advance

That doesn't sound practical. You'll be swapping batteries every second day of use.

Maybe look at LED strips that are USB-powered. You can at least hook them up to a rechargeable battery pack, say 20,000 mAh that should last longer.

You can drill cable holes through timber. Maybe some images of the ceiling space/products you are looking at will help visualise what you're after.

    • Came across the strips which I'm considering for under the benchtop stool area and a cupboard or two. They're fairly cheap on ebay/aliexpress so I might give them a crack. Probably won't stick one on the ceiling though as they have a knack of becoming unstuck as per a few reviews.

Is this your own opinion or the advice you got from a licensed electrician? If it is the previous then get an electrician to inspect the location and give you a quote. I find it hard to believe that it is impossible to wire a new switch and a light above the kitchen bench and if you go down the battery light path it would be a massive inconvenience replacing batteries every few weeks like the previous poster said and your options would be severely limited.

    • Licensed electrician had a look at it and advised there's double timber blocking the way to extend an existing LED laterally to the benchtop. Harder to remedy when its a double storey. Keen to get a second opinion though as there's a power outlet above the benchtop against the wall which should be able to be utilised.

If your purpose is to light up the benchtop, you can probably achieve this by installing ceiling spotlights and directing them to the benchtop. On the other hand if you need the asthetics of pendant lights, then that wouldn’t work. Other options could be just to add more ceiling led downlighting and avoid the timber member above the benchtop.
I don’t like the idea of recharging or replacing batteries on pendants. Pendants are installed high. So, apart from becoming a chore it would be anywhere from inconvenient to unsafe.

It’s probably a little hard to determine if your electrician is giving you a bs explanation or not without knowing further info, so a 2nd opinion might be worth it. I wouldn’t pursue the battery option for lights, you need somewhere to plug the lights into 240v. There are decent LED systems which use battery powered switches and remotes, have a look at the Hafele Loox system.
