NetGear A7000-10000S Nighthawk AC1900 Wi-Fi Adapter $105 + Del ($0 C&C) @ Umart ($99.75 at Officeworks via Price Beat)

110

A pretty good deal at $99.75 at Officeworks with their PBG.

Hasn't dipped below $105 at Amazon this year.

It's a pretty powerful USB WiFi Adapter (alleged speeds up to 1300Mbps), I have a gigabit connection which gives speeds around 800Mbps to the router and I'm getting around 600Mbps at my PC using this adapter wirelessly.

The adapter comes with a pretty neat desktop stand if you don't want the adapter sticking out of your PC wherever you plug it in.

  • If you can't make it to Officeworks or Umart C&C, it's $107.50 here - only 3 in stock though

The adapter comes with a pretty neat desktop stand if you don't want the adapter sticking out of your PC wherever you plug it in.

Connecting directly to your machine is not an option - look at the size of it. The slightest knock, and one or both sides of the USB connection will be broken.

I had the previous version with the same form factor and it worked fine plugged straight into my front USB ports for years.

  • I have one of these and I would recommend using the stand. The size of the wifi adapter makes it impractical to be connected directly to a PC

If you have Good Guys Commercial membership you can get it for $86.

I have 2 of these - they are good and certainly better (faster and with more range) than my laptop's built-in WiFi.
Only criticism is that sometimes it randomly won't recognise my 5ghz network and I have to switch the WiFi channel.

  • This is not even wifi 6

Netgear is absolute crap. Go to Ubiquiti and never look back. No stability issues or firmware security issues that don’t get fixed like Netgear. Never again will I buy such consumer crap & neither should anyone here. It might be $99 but think of your time to diagnose the problems with it and move on.

Ubiquiti is prosumer crap too, it's for dummies who have limited networking knowledge. MikroTik is the price/performance prosumer hardware brand.

        prosumer crap

        Is that a thing?

      • Do Ubiquiti or MikroTik have a USB adapter, with 5GHz capability? I can't find anything on their websites for WiFi USB dongles with 5GHz.

And if both of those two brands don't have WiFi USB adapters with 5GHz then what's a superior USB adapter to Netgear? But, still being a big brand name so widely available.

    • I mean, it's a wireless adapter. Once the driver is installed, it's like you have built in WiFi. No issues here!

    • Have a Netgear model the same as this only the antennae rotates. Same specs, but AC 5 GHZ stopped working, its a well know issue and they have not fixed it with driver updates. Makes it an expensive wireless N stick.

    • Load of crap, not only are you going to be using the drivers from the chipset manufacturer (and thus it does not have anything to do with Netgear), but Ubiquiti has had massive security problems as of late!

    The size looks promising.

I have had a couple of mini Wi-Fi USB adapters that have eventually died, they work normally for a few minutes then constantly drop out and lag, no amount driver updates or messing with Windows helped. They get pretty warm but not overly so, but do you think long terms use just killed them eventually?

I would be interested in hearing other's experiences regarding USB Wi-Fi adapters.

The real deal here is to just get yourself a network card, you'll get better performance for a better price, bonus points for now having an extra USB slot free.

  • I am currently using this usb but planning to upgrade to a mobo that has wifi6. In order to get the best wifi connection, do I just buy antennas and plug it into the mobo and stop using this?
