Dock for Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga

Hi all

Recently bought latest (6th) gen X1 Yoga.

I am new to USB-C/Thunderbolt 4….Can I use any USB-C dock or does it have to be thunderbolt 3 or 4? I'm assuming it doesn't have to be from Lenovo. I'm also assuming I can't use my existing thinkpad onelink+ dock for the new machine? or can I?

I have plenty of lenovo chargers with the yellow rectangle plug.

The dock would need:

  • 2x FHD (1920x1080) video outputs – displayport (preferred) or HDMI
  • ethernet (wifi patchy in study)
  • power passthrough (to charge the laptop)

Optional:

  • USB hub (mostly USB-A but C as well can't hurt)
  • SD/microsd card reader (optional, since I could just get a separate reader)

I'm aware of these two Lenovo docks:
$309: https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/accessories-and-monitors/dockin…
$409: https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/accessories-and-monitors/dockin…

…but I'm hoping to not spend quite so much. Thoughts?

    You’ll be fine with a USB-C dock if you just need 2 x 1080p 60Hz. You will need Thunderbolt if you want higher resolution, e.g. 2 x 1440p, or 2 x 4K.

I have a few of the Lenovo USB-C docks and they’re pretty good - they’re popular in corporate environments, so easy to find on eBay for ~$100 or so. Lots of ports, includes a charger as well.

The (older) Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 dock is also pretty good.

Plenty of other brands make equivalent, e.g. Dell / HP…etc. but I’ve found the Lenovo one to be the best.

Another vote for the Lenovo USB-C dock - I've picked one up second hand for $100. The current iteration will support at least 2x 1440p if the output supports DP1.4 over USB-C (which the latest x1 should). To get 2x 4k you'll need Thunderbolt.

Another upside of the Lenovo dock is a mirrored power button - great if you keep your laptop docked most of the time.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B09D36VGFG/ref=ppx_yo_d…

I've got this for $55.99(after coupon), the item seems have increased in price but not much.. still way cheaper than your thinkpad docks, and does exactly what you want.

this hub works fine with my Thinkpad X12 detachable, which have similar spec to yours.

    • Thanks! Real world experience is super valuable. Are you running 2 monitors as well? Have you experienced any funny behaviour, minor or otherwise? And have you had it long?

There are so many of these no-brand versions out there, I've been nervous since I'm not sure technically what exactly will do the job, so I don't know how to compare.

The replies here have already taught me I don't have to look for thunderbolt docks.

      • have used it for about 3 days no hiccup yet.

it technically support 1x 4k60hz or 2x 4k30hz on Windows(extended mode) or 1x 4k60hz or 2x 4k60hz on Mac(duplicate mode only, aka both screen show same image)

I tried SINGLE 2k120 (same bandwidth as 4K60) and works fine no frameskip.

my use case is to use kb/ms, 2k144screen and charging all on 1 port, and have 1 spare usb-a in case, this exactly fits my purpose, so it should fit urs too. as brand goes, u cant go wrong with Amazon warranty so I didnt care brand as much as functionality.

its manuals state 2x FHD 60hz is supported too so you should be fine anyway.(same bandwidth as 2x 4k30)

        • what I don't like about this hub is… its port is on both side of the body, so cable management is completely f__ked. oh wells at least its cheap

          • @OMGJL: hm yeah that is an issue. Dock position will probably be determined by the power and video cables. Cheers

            • @andresampras: For me it is a good working hub, except the cable length isn't very long so it have to rest near the laptop, and the rest of the USB/display cable need to be tied with some Velcro strap, not the ugliest, but wasn't the most optimal thing either.

If I don't move it around and just let the hub stay in one spot where the laptop goes, its not that bad
