iPad 5th Gen Not Charging/Turning on

Hi to the Ozbargain Community,

I hope you have all backed a winner on cup day, & if not at least enjoyed the fantastic weather out of lockdown.
My daughters 5th gen ipad won't charge or turn on. It was charging, then it wouldn't charge, only had the lighting bolt cable symbol on a blank screen when plugged in. It used to charge up to 100% but then a lot of the time it was plugged in & power point on while in use for most of the day. Is it likely it is only the battery that needs to be replaced or is it more likely that it is the motherboard that has worn out?

We would appreciate any assistance as it is her 9th birthday on Friday & she really misses her Ipad.

Thanks, Have a great night :-)

  • Same thing happened to my wife's iPad. Plugged it in, some form of battery symbol on the display, couldn't turn it on at all, even when it was plugged in. Took it to one of those battery replacement places in the local mall. 2 hours later with a new battery, it was like a brand new unit. Has been working flawless since then.

    • Hi Pegaxs, I'll try that in the in melb cbd tomorrow. Thanks

      • Don't forget to bring a mask.

To me, it sounds like the Apple store would be better at working that kind of thing out than randoms on the internet.

    • Hi The Bird, thought I'd try on OzB 1st to see if anyone had similar experiences or any ideas. Thanks

For the charging issue: The charging port might be clogged. Maybe try using a toothpick to see if it clears it and try charging. Apple store also does something similar for free if that was the issue if you are not comfortable doing it. For bettery or other issues apple or third party repair.

    • Thanks ashah1212, took to repair shop & they had a look the other day. Doesn't seem to be anything blocking it.

  • Well if there's no other obvious damage (i.e. you haven't recently dunked it in water, let's say), then my hunch is that either the charging port or the battery has gone kaput, either of which are quite easy to fix. You can take it to a repair shop, they'll charge you a fair bit. Or you can just DIY - the classic iPad is probably the most repairable Apple device.

    • Hi p1 ama, Kogan have the batteries & 9pcs tools $32. Does say to take to repair shop to avoid damaging it. Thanks for your reply

  • 5th gen is from 2017. would be surpised if the battery already dead. Try a different cable and charger to start.

    • Hi aeoueoa, thanks, tried that, no go.

  • Can you download an app that shows your battery health/cycle count? Or can you not even power it on anymore?

    • Hi John Kimble, thanks. It won't turn on at all. Not powering up when plug in, but does has the cable/charge symbol come up which is why I'm,m thinking it's the battery needs to be replaced. Kogan sell them with tools for $32

      • It'll be a mediocre battery that they sell. A genuine apple battery will be most expensive but you should get long life out of that. Kogan batteries might be 50-70% performance.

Did you buy it used? It might not even have a genuine battery already if it's used.

My brother gave to us, screen was broken, he got it fixed.
I have had quotes from 2 different shops $140 to $180 to fix the battery/motherboard which has been fixed once before about 6mths ago.
Or $99 for a service if that's all it needs. Decided to buy the latest iPad 9th gen which has much better battery life.
Thank-You to everyone for your suggestions.
          All the Best, Cheers
