a quote from one of the whiskey bibles…

Nose: Massive peat. Ultra-intense iodine carries a shade more spice than of old. The fruity-sherry notes are clean, vanilla is much deeper. Beautifully layered. Palate: Peat so thick you could stand a spoon in it. Chewy iodine bolstered by sherry and big oak. Finish: A little spice lightens the grip of the peat and vanilla. Dries off with malt, dried dates… and iodine. Comment: A true classic in every sense that offers breathtaking depth. Rating: 95 - Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2006.

I get the impression it's full of peat and iodine ;)

      • like you would not believe…
        one of my favourites

  • I don't know a lot about whiskey, but does it hurt to save this bottle for a few more years or is it best to drink now?

    • +7

whiskey doesn't age in the bottle

drink it now because it is very nice

EDIT: price is ok - hovers around $80-$90 at DM

It won't hurt, but it won't help either. If you want to give it as a gift later it'll be fine.

Only thing is make sure you like peaty whiskies.. they can be an acquired taste. If you do know that you like them then this is a good one.

      • Thanks for the reply, I would be buying it for a gift.

  • great whiskey is great okz

    Ron Swanson approved.

  • My girl got me this for xmas….amazing scotch. a little smoky…but sooooooo goooood

  • the JW gold label for 69 is also a good price - for what it is (am not trying to compare it to the lagavulin - just pointing it out that dans have it on sale too)

    • i bought one of these too… dammit!

    no love for ron?

"Ron de Jeremy tastes full and has a long, smooth finish."

yes… there is numerous video evidence to this effect

Just got this and a glenfiddich (for $49, not an amazing price but also a nice scotch and not a bad price)
    Thx mate

    • Good price since glenfiddich is $55 from liquorland atm

  • This vs Loch Lomond 21 Year Old Scotch Whisky.

Anyone got any comments? Thinking as a gift.

  • Love this drink. Great flavours. This drink made me love Whiskey -but only if it is Lagavulin!

  • Now i wish i bought the woolies gift cards yesterday! =(

    • +1

try to buy wish card late tomorrow again.."RACQ" code should give you the 5% discount again.

      • thanks mate - i'll have another go later today - it does not work at the moment.

I have never seen it this cheap in a retail shop in Australia.

Once upon a galaxy in a time far far away I had the chance to buy lots at $50/bottle.

    I didn't.

To this day I lament that decision. It would've sent me broke but I should've done it.

    sob sniffle

  • Fantastic drop, just bought and am currently enjoying a dram.

  • How does this compare to Laphraoig 10 year old and quarter cask? I've been wanting to try Lagavulin for a while and this might be a good opportunity to taste a 16 year old.

    • I have only tried Laphraoig 10 yo.

Compared to that, this is a lot less smoky. IMO the Lagavulin is a far superior drink. It's much smoother, the flavour is a lot deeper and complex, and the level of smoke is just right for my tastes.

  • Good old Dr Dan Murphy, he always has the correct prescription.

There's a good price on Glenmoragnie Two Glass pack at the moment http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_709151/glenmorangie-the-…
Cheaper then just the bottle and you get free whisky glasses which are a must.

    • Not bad. IMO Glenmoragnie is a lot nicer whiskey for my pallet. Extremely smooth. I may have to get both :-)!

  • There's also 5.25% cash rebate if you use starthere.com.au and your level is founder, otherwise I think it's around 3% :D

  • Thanks got me some new Whisky to try :)

  • How does this compare to a 15 Year Old Dalwhinnie ?

    • Completely different whiskies.

Dalwhinnie is very mild in flavour, sweet fruits, barley sugar, cereal, and the gentlest bit of smoke over the top.

The Lagavulin is quite a punchy Islay whisky.. heaps of peat smoke and iodine (though not quite as phenolic/medicinal as laphroaig or ardbeg). Noticable sherry and oak finish with a bit of vanilla and grassiness in the background.

  • That is damn cheap, still my favourite single malt

  • not much of a bargain considering its usual price is around $85 at Dan Murphys

    • Its never on special - so yes it is a bargain

  • Not my favourite whiskey its very smokey but a good deal for a 16yr old single malt.

On another note can anyone recommend a nice affordable glass?

    • +5

I drink out of the bottle.

    • yeah, also looking for some nice affordable glasses.

  • Cheers, ordered one for my single malt collection, my mum is going to start thinking im an alcoholic… D:

    • lol i ordered 2 bottles and 9 other drinks last night, whats your mum going to think of me?

      • +3

Ask her in the morning :-)

  • Use promotional code PP12 for Free Delivery

  • i get really annoyed by whiskey prices from one shop to the next…
