General PC Build (Where to Go, What to Buy in Sydney)

Good morning ladies and gents.

Apologies for such an open ended question but thought I would consult the smartest people I know! 🤪

Having no expertise in computers but needing to acquire a PC at home to run general duties such as Microsoft Office and light video editing, what should I be buying and from where considering I live in Sydney.

I hear MSY technologies in Auburn is a good place to start? But please correct me if I'm wrong.

Budget of about $700-$1000.

Thank you everyone!

    Buy a laptop.

    • Agree. With your use cases a laptop seems like a better option?

Scorptec is also in Auburn and competitive on prices, and a better customer service experience. They will sit down and can consult on what you will be using it for and you budget, MSY is like the Seinfeld soup kitchen, order what you want and NEXT!
MWave are just down the road too and are good to deal with.

  • It's all fine and dandy until something plays up and you'll need to troubleshoot it yourself then drive to MSY, get the part RMA'ed etc. Yeah nah, I'd rather have a pre-assembled machine from the usual suspects.

      Where in Dandy?

      • yeah, you know, Dandy Electronics

        • and when it fails, you just hire a Dandyman to look at it ?

  • There's a few Lenovo education deals that pop up. A little above the budget but I'd recommend spending a little more to get something that will last a few years.

  • What does "light video editing" entail and how often?

I'd be half tempted to buy a mac mini, if you don't mind macOS. Premiere works incredibly well on the M1 and the latest version of Office is finally not shit on mac. Plus it's small and quiet, which is always nice.

If light video editing is really light, I'd just look at a SFF refurb desktop. Can pick up a 7th gen one for under $400.

  • Perhaps tell us what kind of software you are going to use?

  • QFlow Technology Eastwood great service Thomas is the proprietor he will discuss your needs & give you the best advice. I've been dealing with them since 2009 & don't bother with anyone else.
