Gotogate Cancelling My Ticket for No Reason

I just had a terrible experience buying my ticket through gotogate(https://au.gotogate.com/). I bought my overseas ticket on 6/11/21 for $760, then suddenly just today(9/11/21) I've received an issue for a refund for my ticket without any explanation.

I tried to call their customer service which I have to wait for more than 1 hour to ask what was the reason of the cancellation. He first said that my flight is cancelled, then I told him that gotogate is still selling the exact same flight but now its $1250 so I'm pretty sure that the flight is not cancelled. So I asked him again the reason for the cancellation and he hung up on me. I tried to call again for the 2nd time and have waited for almost 2 hours now with no one answering.

I'm planing to make a complaint to ACCC and hope my experience will help anyone to reconsider booking a flight ticket through gotogate.

      He hasnt got the refund - hes been told he'll get it like many others it seems.

      …. and judging by the feedback, theres more chance of walking on the sun in thongs than him getting money back

    Thank-you for the warning, I hope others can learn from this and avoid them.
    While searching for flights recently, I noticed they were only slightly cheaper than booking direct. Did a quick google on gotogate and noticed they have a pretty poor reputation and your experience matches many others.

    Is an American website, that’s why it’s cheaper, they don’t comply with the same conditions and Australian retailer would. This is why you should always book with the airline.

    At the moment I would only purchase through the large Australian based travel agents, preferably with bricks and mortar stores where you can walk in and annoy them.

    You have much better consumer rights doing through a AU based travel agent.

    No point complaining to ACCC. This company is based in Europe so not much ACCC can or will do

    Can't believe these guys are still operating. Biggest scam company.
    Back in 2020 my flights were cancelled by the airline and the airline was issuing a full refund.
    However, Gotogate would not refund the flights. Disconnected their phone line and it was impossible to reach them. Emails were never answered.
    They only called me back after I initiated a chargeback via the credit card company after 6 months. Customer rep told me they wouldn't issue the refund until I dropped the chargeback request first. I promptly told them to f off as how can I trust them to honour the refund when they have ignored me. Persisted with the chargeback and finally got a full refund after 9 months.

    For online travel portal always use Australian registered portals that are affiliated with large travel agencies for ex. aunt betty is owned by FC. Also use a good travel agent where u can pay additional fees to get service rather than they discount you with $ 20 and you regret. I book my flight via Maan Travel for my India trip. Due to unforeseen circumstances court case date come up in the week I was travelling and hence I need to reschedule my flight. I requested Maan Travel to amend my flights and was happy to pay the price difference, MT asked me $ 600 date amendment fees n handling fees which were almost the price of a new ticket if I buy direct from airlines. Airlines were happy to amend my flights without charges, since it was booked with travel agents they don't handle the direct requests. So learned my lesson very hard way. This was in 2017.

    I used Gotogate to go to Tokyo in Feb 2020, just before the pandemic started, the tickets were cheap. Had no issues with them probably because we did not cancel. I was able to confirm my booking in the Airline's website.

    I probably would not use any third party sites now due to all the Covid uncertainty.
