Are these even legal to ride in VIC ???

    56kph Top Speed

    Seems a bit dangerous…

    • +3

Your car has a speedometer of 260kph, do you need to go that fast?

      • +2

You realise a speedo saying 260 doesn't mean your cars top speed is 260?

      • +3

Your car has a speedometer of 260kph, do you need to go that fast?

My car would struggle to get to less than half that.

My car however is tested and registered for safety on Australian roads and insured for personal or property damage.

Is you skateboared registered safe for use on Australian roads and insured for any injuries that are caused?

        • My car would struggle to get to less than half that.

          I can see why.

        • +1

Your car along with other Australians are responsible for 1,500 deaths each year. More than deaths from Covid each and every year.

How many deaths has people cycling, scooting, skateboarding caused over the past decade?

Pure physics. 100kg @56kph isn't the same as your polluting, congestion causing, 2000kg metal box doing 56kph. You're also well aware of the squishyness of your own body when you're out of said metal box, with a sense of self preservation.

          • @lawyerz:

Your car along with other Australians are responsible for 1,500 deaths each year.

            Not mine.
Also, in most cases it is the driver's fault.
Almost all of the cars on the road have been registered and approved safe for use on the roads and are insured in case of injury or damage.

I've been up to 50km/h on my current Meepo V3 and it does feel somewhat sketchy on street wheels, even on a smooth bike path. Pneumatic wheels would inspire a bit more confidence I think.

My partner and I wear a Helmet & Pads when we ride because anything 30kph+ is some serious speed.

As for the legality, I believe eskate boards are in somewhat of a grey area in most states. Basic rule of thumb is don't ride dangerously/like a dick and generally you'll be left alone by cops.

As for the legality, I believe eskate boards are in somewhat of a grey area in most states.

        Doesn't appear grey…

In Victoria, you are not allowed to use electric skateboards on public roads or road-related areas including footpaths or nature strips.

        https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/road-r…

        • Hence why I said "most states"…

          • +1

@WowBargain: This summary suggest that in "most states" it is clearly illegal to ride e-skateboards outside the boundaries of private property:

            https://eskatebuddy.com/are-electric-skateboards-legal-in-au…

            • -1

@db sa: Not considered "illegal" in only a few states according to that article. So perhaps my conclusion was slightly misleading.

People are really quick to jump on the "but it's illegal" train with these, but in my experience if you just ride at an appropriate speed you won't get hassled. After all, what's the difference between a skater going 25kph and an electric board doing the same? In fact the electric board has more control in this scenario.

In WA we have a fairly strong eskate community that do regular city group rides with 20+ people. Never have I heard of anyone having an issue with police.

                Maybe because it is…

Just like I wouldn't drive an unregistered car on the road, even if I thought it was safe, I would not ride an illegal recreational vehicle.
If you hit and injure a person, animal or even just cause damage, you'll be in deep shit if caught with evidence.

                • +1

@jv: I don't want to delve into the ethics of not doing illegal activities just because the law says so, but causing injuries to other people is so extremely rare it's not even a discussion worth having. It would be better value to talk about how we can curb deaths via shark attack…

As I mentioned previously, it's all about taking responsibility and riding at an appropriate speed, within your limits and with appropriate safety gear. Most people are able to do this just fine it seems.

not doing illegal activities just because the law says so

You sound exactly like one of those anti-vaxxers…

causing injuries to other people is so extremely rare it's not even a discussion worth having

Sure, let's just kill or permanently disable people so you can have some fun…

                    • @jv: Hahaha far from it my friend. Fully vaxxed here.

Sure, let's just kill or permanently disable people so you can have some fun…

What an absolutely ridiculous thing to say. Same thing could be said for thousands of activities, legal or not.

Narrow mindedness never got anyone far.. This is quite a painful conversation that I do not wish to further engage in lmao.

                      • @WowBargain:

What an absolutely ridiculous thing to say.

No more ridiculous that advocating people break the law

                        • @jv: He/she's given up/run out of silly comebacks.
                          Could say he/she's been outed.
Dunno how sharks come into the discussion - WA. meh.

@wetwork: Couldn't be more wrong with that conclusion.

I just don't think an Ozbargain deal post is an appropriate medium to have a debate about the ethics of electric skateboarding.

I know it may hurt to hear, but plenty of people ride these and cause zero harm to others/themselves. It's just the truth.

          Likewise clear in SA:

Can I ride a motorised wheeled recreational device on a road, footpath or bike track?

No. These devices cannot be used on roads or road related areas such as foot paths, bike/pedestrian tracks, or vehicle parking areas. Under South Australian legislation, these devices are considered to be motor vehicles. Operating a motor vehicle requires a driver’s licence, registration and compulsory third party insurance. As these devices do not meet the safety standards under the Australian Design Rules they are not eligible for registration.

          https://mylicence.sa.gov.au/road-rules/riding_motorised_scoo…

Nevertheless I see a few skate ninjas about the place, happily with proper helmets and protection because there's a heckuva difference between crashing at 50kph with your car's crumple zones and airbags around you and taking a tumble into a tree or post from a skateboard at that speed with only your body and clothing protecting you.

        • +1

          Classic jv

      • My partner and I wear a Helmet & Pads when we ride because anything 30kph+ is some serious speed.

It's sheer stupidity not to wear a helmet on these boards. Once your brakes randomly engage or the board rapidly starts because of a remote/controller glitch, you're in for an injury.

    • HA! 7KW of power - hell no. I think the nanny laws only allow for around 200 watts

  • Meepo make Awesome boards. My NLS Pro still running strong after over a year of daily use / abuse.

  • Would you go for Meepo or Evolve? Similar price range when it comes to Evolve's GTR boards.

I can also see Evolve has this "Hadean Series" which is $3000+ and I'd probably never pay that much to Evolve. I had lots of good time, but also some terrible times on multiple GTRs. Talking motors jerking and random, dangerous connectivity issues.

I wish Boosted Boards were still a thing. I'd rather have less range and power, but the reliability…

    • +4

Definitely Meepo at this point in time.

Evolve always considered themselves as selling "premium" quality boards and this was their business model for some years, however lately we've seen Evolve plateau while other Chinese manufacturers have been making large jumps in board quality all while lowering their prices.

The Hurricane vs Hadean series is a perfectly example. Extremely similarly spec'd but a 1k+ price difference. If you've been tuning in, a lot of the eskate forums are shitting on the Hadean for its exorbitant, uncompetitive pricepoint. Generally the boards are very overpriced in today's market.

Evolve has also had notable safety issues, such as brakes locking up while at speed.

I would really like to support the local Aussie companies but it's hard to do when other companies are making much more compellingly priced boards with equally as good hardware.

      • +2

I haven't been on this subject for a while, but I see my concerns around Evolve's product are still valid after years. In another comment here I also mentioned what you too said:

Evolve has also had notable safety issues, such as brakes locking up while at speed.

And yeah, I've had lots of empathy for Evolve, but their boards are great only when I can trust them. And until I see some proof that they changed the hardware, do something to improve, I may as well go for a cheaper overseas brand. And frankly, I can't be bothered digging on forums and the webs for a proof.

    • +2

do not go Evolve, early GTR owner. Good customer service but the problem is intrinsic to their own custom design. Threw off board multiple times due to this. Also they are a bad name in the industry from bashing chinese brands boards, comparing them unfairly etc, lots of dramas… Too expensive for what they are now, as much as I like to support local Aus businesses, this one is a big no

  • +2

Does this work under water?, thinking of taking it to the beach for some fishing

    • +1

some actually do, if you look up youtube, people have tried skating in flood areas. Hub drived ones if I remember correctly

      • Thx I want to go fully underwater though, this is cheaper than a submarine and we all know the French love subs.
