Help - iPhone 4S protective case - recommendations?

Hi Guys

Just wondering what cases people are using on their iphone 4S?

My wife just received a white 4s model, and I'm paranoid its going to get broken due to toddlers playing with it / dropping it etc.

I like the look of this Ballistic Hard Core case - but it seems expensive

people on ebay are selling it , but they sell an original model that does not support the iphone 4s due to a change in light sensor location.

I also looked at the Otterbox Defender, but there are mixed reviews on it. Some love it, some loath it.

What are you guys using? Are you happy with it? Has it survived a drop?

thanks in advance

My personal opinion is that if you are going to stick an ugly, chunky case on the phone, maybe you'd be better off with a different phone in the first place.

Nothing much will protect the screen from an impact that breaks the glass. Our 3 year old broke my partner's 3GS screen due to a drop onto concrete. I cannot think of any way of better protecting it… other than not letting toddlers carry the phone around in the first place.

    • Bit of a generalization. I have had an otterbox defender since day 1 with the addition of 2 screen protectors (1 under and 1 over the otterbox plastic). It looks brand new and no loss of sensitivity. The phone has been subject to countless drops, even when the screen hits a objects corner, ony a scuff on the outer screen protector occurs. I should also mention I never once used the additional hard cover protector/stand, which would make it near impossible to break the screen. OP, check out some of the test videos on YouTube, I like the one off the 22 story hotel.

  • Hi .

I'm not particularly fazed whether the case makes the phone ugly / bulky. The iphone was not purchased for vanity/aesthetics reasons. The phone will continue to function as an iPhone and the apps that we leverage for ipad etc will still function (browser/stocks/remote-control stuff etc). The wife had an android phone (HTC legend) and we got rid of it. Bad reception, limited 3g bands, app availablility etc etc

I'm just realistic that the (i)phone will eventually drop, and I want to give it every chance of survival.

So nobody is using a protective case on their iphone?

  • otterbox defender, on 3gs and ipad.. dropped MANY times, and all good.. Just buy from o/s, or pay aussie prices = top dollar..

  • Hi Wiz;

Looking on amazon.com, the old otterbox defender has great views. The new one for 4/4s does not have the same level of consistent glowing reviews. I'm potentially looking at getting one of these lifeproof cases; but it seems overkill and overpriced.

    • I have one of these, it's prett slim for a water proof case but it doesn't exactly seem durable. As long as you are not knocking it around (specifically charging bay door) it should be fine.

  • For my iPhone I just have a screen protector front and back.. no case, a friend of mine has his completely bare for over a year without any damage.. really it depends on how clumsy you are :)

    • Yes, I also share the idea that iPhone don't need the case and the case will do few job if it drops from high position…
