I wouldn't exactly call this a cheap kettle, but it's the cheapest I've seen it in the last year. It's often discounted to $149 (down from $219), but this time it's included in David Jones' extra 10% off sale. It also hasn't been cheaper than this price on Amazon since November 2019.

The non-variable temp option is on sale down to $84.60 as well.

  • I've seen this one at bunnings though I'm not sure how it compares? https://www.bunnings.com.au/healthy-choice-electric-800w-1-2…

    • These basically fall apart/leach metals into you water within 6 months. The materials are very poor.

Oh its also crazy slow. The breville is much faster even with twice the volume.

      • Leach metals how? Mate of mine just got one of these, should he be concerned?

        • My folks had one and it started to degrade super fast; irreparable rust-like damage to the element plate that even after a deep citric acid clean tainted the water, tasted metallic and had floating flecks. But they also didn't clean it often enough IMO and I wonder if showing it more respect might have helped.

          • @Anders: eek. Thanks for that, I'll make sure to pass the warning on. 6 mths would have been within the warranty period, did they end up returning it?

            • @highon2str: Don't think so. Kogan purchase I think. Too much bother for them.

I bought this kettle a year ago for around $150 on sale and love it, i use the different temperatures for hot chocolates, bubble tea, coffee etc.. the glass makes our tiny kitchen seems that 1% bigger also :p

This kettle (or at least 2 years ago version of this kettle) is not great IMO. There always seems to be water around the electric base (common problem in user reviews), the lid is a poor fit and steam just billows out from all sides on top, so you (seemingly) lose more volume to evaporation than most kettles for that reason. If you don't use filtered/soft water it also builds limescale/mineral deposits suspiciously quickly and showcases it for all to see due to the glass, so ya gotta clean it very regularly.

On the plus side, this is a good price and the kettle does have some decent features. I'd still go for a Brewista over this tho.

    • Thanks for the review. I’ll look into the Brewista while waiting for this to be delivered.

    • Anders, thoughts on this kettle?

      The matte black looks nice.

      • They're all good from my experience. I have the less premium stainless steel one. Depends if you need the gooseneck too; there's a regular spout option.

Fellow Stagg EKG and Corvo EKG are darlings of the speciality tea and coffee industry too. But the price reflects that. Be mindful of their smaller volume.

        • I'm mostly an espresso drinker and use a Rocket R58 throughout the day. But we sometimes drink tea with breakfast as well as in the evenings, though my wife prefers the Turkish0stye whereby you have two stacked pots, the bottom with water the top with the tea, and then add an amount of each to taste.

However lately we've been skipping the Turkish tea for the simpler one kettle and (pretty ordinary) teabag for convenience, and I thought I'd buy her a nice looking kettle for Christmas that doesn't make a mess when pouring.

oh and the Artisan Brewista is in the same price range as the EKGs you mentioned.

          • @DevGuy: Yes, but unlike like Fellow, Brewista have less premium material options that make them very good value for money and competitive with this breville sale price. That's why I mentioned them. Their premium options were created because the Stagg is so popular.

Given your use case, the Stagg is arguably the benchmark. Slowest flow rate of the two and smaller footprint, but also less volume.

            • @Anders: Interesting that you give the Stagg the nod for flow rate as this comparison video found the Brewista to have the most precise pouring:

              https://youtu.be/mI2vKrpCOkQ?t=320

I also find the Stagg a little ugly so that is probably making me less objective.

              • @DevGuy: Slower was my claim, which is true. It's harder to stuff up because you can't overpour like you can with the brewista, which when full is very easy to overpour given how sensitive it is to switch flow rate and unbalanced it is to weild when full. It's still great though, and after a while you do get used to it. I'm talking about coffee pour overs here though, not tea. Fast flow is good for almost all other applications, so my negative might be your positive.

You're the first person I've ever heard to call the Stagg ugly! I think it's a master-class of industrial design. Brewista's logo is obnoxiously large on their new kettles and why if I was to go to that price point I'd go Fellow.

                • @Anders: Random second opinions are "ugly", "is that ikea?", "that looks trendy", "nice kettle, what's special about it?", "yuck". The gamut it seems.
