Was any Australian Organisation Hacked Recently? (Getting Scam Calls)

I noticed I have been getting scam calls a lot more today. Was any Australian organisation hacked recently? Just curious.

Usually I get about one a week. I have gotten three so far today. Sometimes I get customer calls from unfamiliar numbers, so I have to pick up the call just in case.

So far,

A "call" from Australia Border force about a parcel stuck in customs.
Another "call" from Australia Border force about an illegal substance in a parcel addressed to me.
Another "call" from a bank telling me that my account is about to be cancelled.

  • I haven't had any scam calls (touch wood) for at least a week.

I use TrueCaller on my mobiles.

All landline phone calls go straight to my answering machine and if I don't recognise the number and they don't leave a message bad luck.

My theory is the "million dollar vax" is a scam and is the source of a lot of our spam

    • Good thought…

    • I dont think they are the cause. I wanted to sign up, but I heistated because I didnt want to give them my DOB and drivers license. Why do you need my drivers license for a lucky draw?

Anyway, i didnt sign up for the million dollar vax draw.

I wasn’t asked for this stuff?

        • Ok, good for you then. When I looked at the site last, which was when it was first promoted, I didn't bother because there was too much personal info required. I remember because that was what stopped me from entering the draw.

They didn’t ask for that info.

    • Yes. I have been pwned. My email address and phone number, but not recently.

      • but not recently

It would take time for your details to be picked up and disseminated through the scamming industry.

Stop putting your phone numbers to Organisations
start putting in fake numbers most of the Organisations don't need your actual real phone number most of the times, e.g. eBay dont need your real phone number unless you are doing a physical local pickup (even then you can just contact on eBay directly). Other shopping sites same thing. You get you parcels to your ADDRESS not your phone number, So stop giving them real detail.

  • Yea I've had 4 today.. didnt answer any - as I looked at most of the numbers and most were 1 number off other scam calls I've sussed recently. usually lots of the same digits

also if I'm on the PC when it rings, I'll quickly look at https://www.numberlookup.com.au/ and punch the number in….

  • Yes, gone up from 1-2 to 5-6 per week, mostly on Fridays. If you are on Android, Google will alert you to most of them, though a few get thru which I then flag and they never bother me again.

For me, predominantly the bank and tax recording scam. Occasionally the Chinese recording… Rarely the Indian solar/energy comparison people…

  • I had 2-4 today and hadn’t had any for a few weeks, reckon today was just a busy day for the scammers
