So 10% of value returned as flybys credit.

Waiting for 30x reward points from either supermarkets..

    • -3

I hear that a similar deal will be running again soon. This one is not quite worth the effort.

      • +2

        hear from where with who?

      • +4

The Woolworths 20x reward poitns offer gave me $350 of shopping on a MBP. 10% saving on Educational price + credit card reward points earned on AGC purchase is quite a substantial saving. I saved around $800 on the original Apple price tag.

        • Did you get it from Apple or a retailer like JB? I believe you can get JB gift cards from Flybuys points.

          • +2

@dreamykitten: Picked it up from an Apple store. Also used Student Edge discount on top of the Educational discount.

            • @vrsac: How do you get student edge on top of apple education? Planning to buy a MacBook for my kid šŸ˜Š

              • +8

@syngen: Register with Student Edge and you'll get access to their special pricing (you'll notice Student Edge label in Apple store). I saved around $90 on top of Educational price.

                https://studentedge.org/au/deals/details/apple-student-discoā€¦

                • @vrsac: Awesome. Thanks!

                • @vrsac: So is that the final price that you linked?

                  • @nightelves: that's the lowest price I could get on Apple products atm. You need to register to reveal a link to Student Edge Apple store.

                • @vrsac: Just tried this with an ipad mini and the price was the same as the Edu price (no further discount). I have a Student edge account and the ipad mini is listed on the SE page.

                  • @gadgetguy: maybe they don't discount all products?

                    • @vrsac: I think it is not working for some reason. On the SE page it says "ipad mini from $569" but following the link the lowest price for the mini is $669 (the EDU price).

Shame, that would be a good discount.

                      • @gadgetguy: Yeah they've changed in on the SE page now to "from $669". Same price as standard Edu.

            • @vrsac: Is Student Edge discount better than AOC?

        • How does purchasing gift cards with a credit card works? I thought it counted as a cash advance so

          1. Donā€™t earn points
          2. Interest repayments applied immediately
          • @almotions: e.g. with Citibank CC you get reward points on every dollar spent, regardless what you purchase. 1 point per $1 spent.
if you pay off your outstanding CC balance before due date, you don't get charged any interest.

          • +3

@almotions: What? Have purchased many gift cards on cc and it's treated like a normal product.

            • +2

@raptormesh: I haven't purchased gift cards on a credit yard yet, however from my research into Westpac it seems like they would be considered a cash advance:

"Cash Advance ā€“ A transaction where you:
…pay for items we consider to be equivalent to cash (for example; … stored value cards)"

Let me know if I'm missing something, I'd certainly prefer to purchase via a credit card!

              Westpac terms and conditions document:
              https://www.westpac.com.au/content/dam/public/wbc/documents/ā€¦

              • +9

@almotions: I donā€™t think Westpac has the ability to see what you purchased in a transaction. I think they can only see you purchased something or some things.

Colesā€™ EFTPOS terminals (like any EFTPOS terminal or online payment system) have a Merchant Category Code (MCC) assigned to each of them, and that code is used to determine the type of business youā€™re shopping at.

If you use your Westpac credit card at a supermarket (e.g. Coles), Westpac will see the EFTPOS terminal is assigned MCC 5411 (well, I think it is specifically 5411, but I could be wrong!). Based on that (and some other data), Westpac will see you are at a supermarket, but I donā€™t think Coles tells Westpac an item-by-item breakdown of what you have purchased.

Iā€™m also 99% sure Coles does not change the Merchant Category Code if you are purchasing a 1kg pack of mince vs a pair of socks vs a gift card. However, I think the MCC may change for cashouts, but you generally can only do cashout over the EFTPOS network at Coles or Woolworths, so that is a moot point.

I have bought plenty of gift cards from Coles (and Woolworths and BIG W and Officeworks) with my AMEX, and I have not once been slugged a cash advance. I think youā€™ll find other Westpac credit card holders will say the same thing.

I have also previously used my AMEX at Prezzee and was not charged a cash advance fee, but Iā€™m not sure if that would be the same if you used your Westpac credit card at Prezzee, since Prezzee may use an MCC that indicates to Westpac that it sells gift cardsā€¦

                • +2

@WookieMonster: This .. often Amex tries to exclude gift cards from their promotions but they can't, as they don't have any visibility into what you spent on. The only place where they can see this is when you spend thru PayPal or similar payment services, where PayPal passes thru additional information.

                  • +1

@cre8ive: The only time AMEX is able to exclude gift card purchases is if you purchase a gift card from a retailer online and that retailer processes it separately from other online orders, making it easy for AMEX to tell when you have purchased a gift card.

For example, Myer sells Myer gift cards on a separate website and any payments go through a separate payment process when compared to online orders from the regular Myer website, so AMEX can tell you were on Myer's gift card website and therefore exclude that purchase from any AMEX deals.

                • +2

@WookieMonster: Thanks for the detailed reply, Iā€™ll give it a go!

          Thanks, find it in BAM.

          • @Neoika: what is BAM?

            • @samehada: I assume Bricks And Mortar

              • +3

@Neoika: Although the catalogue doesn't say it, I reckon the variable load gift card will earn 10x points too…

    • i hope so, going to jump on it right away when 30x

    • +3

Waiting for the flame wars arguing how much if a % saving this is.

  • +3

    was 30x points before

    • +4

At least four times early this year.

      • 30x pts could be a history now.

  • Can I buy an iPhone from the Apple store with these? Also does the Apple store allow the use of multiple gift cards in a single transaction? Thanks.

    • +3

      Yes and yes

    • +1

Yes yes. I bought iPhone 13 mini yesterday from the Apple store using $1200 gift card.

    • +6

Yes and yes. However there's an 8 gift card limit if paying in store, over the phone and online. You also cannot pay with only Apple Account Balance (which has a maximum limit of $4999) in store.

      https://www.apple.com/au/shop/help/payments

Using more than one payment method
You can also combine payment methods to pay for your purchase. Choose from the following combinations of credit cards and Apple Gift Cards:

Apple Gift Card(s) - up to eight
Apple Gift Card(s) - up to eight + one credit card
Apple Gift Card(s) - up to eight + Apple Account Balance
Apple Gift Card(s) - up to eight + Apple Account Balance + one credit card
Apple Account Balance + one credit card

You can use up to eight Apple Gift Cards at Apple.com or when placing an order over the phone on 133ā€‘622. You can use up to eight Apple Gift Cards for one transaction when you purchase at an Apple Store. You can use your Apple Gift Card(s) with one credit card as well as with your Apple Account Balance to pay for your purchase.

      • can you use the old iTune gc to pay instore?

        • "Both the Apple Gift Cards and App Store & iTunes Gift Cards (previous generation) can be redeemed into your Apple Account Balance."

It doesn't specifically say if you can use iTunes Gift Cards in store. I don't think you can pay in store with them as they were designed for online purchases only (same with App Store Gift Cards). But you can load them into your Apple Account Balance.

      • I have a apple gift card with $500. Can I use it to buy apple care+ ($314)? What happen to the balance? Do I need to use the gift card all in one transaction?

        Thank you.

  • +2

Just load multiple cars to the account balance first, to get around this 8 card limit.

Also cards come in varying values of up to $500 each. 8 of $500 is a lot money

    • Apple Stores don't allow Apple Account Balance to be used as a payment method, at least not by itself. Of course you can just order online with Apple Account Balance (a maximum limit of $4999) and pickup in store.

      • +1

I'm pretty sure that's how I bought some apple stuff recently… Not to be confused with iTunes balance if that helps

Or you meant in store? Probably, don't think it's good idea to go through 8 giftcards in person, so never gonna try in any case

        • +4

Not to be confused with iTunes balance if that helps

iTunes balance and Apple Store balance are the same thing now.

          • @kerfuffle: Unless U still have the old iTunes balance. I have a bit sitting for ages, can't be used for hardware purchases …

            • @siiking: "Both the Apple Gift Cards and App Store & iTunes Gift Cards (previous generation) can be redeemed into your Apple Account Balance."

              According to this you can.

            • @siiking: Yes you can. I used mine to buy my iPad mini 6.

        • Yes, I meant in store.

  • Is there any cost associated with activating gift card in store?

    • No, an $X gift card cost exactly $X.

  • Anyone know if you can use an Apple account balance to buy over the phone with a price match?

    • That should be fine. Thereā€™s nothing in the gift card terms and conditions to say you cannot do that.

    • Does Apple store match price with other retailers?

      • They can price match (up to 10% off their RRP) over the phone and (apparently, if you look at the replies to my linked comment) in-store.

They cannot price match on their online stores (including their Apple Store app).

        • -2

Going now 15% off Catch cards at Coles that nobody believes me on lol :)
Automatically deducted at the registers on the $50's .
Been hidden the whole week .
Anyway I'm fully loaded with them even if it is my imagination hehe .

  • Lucky the discounted price of the icecream is still the same, but the 'was' price is still increasing.

  • -1

So Apple Gift Cards can only be used at Apple Stores?

    • +2

      They can used at:

      • In-person at a physical Apple Store, or
      • Over-the-phone with Apple (at 133 622), or
      • On the Apple Online Store (including the Apple Store app, Apple Education Store and the all the different EPP portals).

They can also be redeemed directly onto your Apple Accountā€™s Balance, so you can pay for Apple Music subscriptions, Apple TV+ subscriptions, etc, or pay for content on the various App Stores or iTunes content, etc. You can also pay for items on the Apple Online Store or over-the-phone with Apple using this balance (but not in-person at a physical Apple Store for some reasonā€¦).

      • -2

Thanks, so essentially only with Apple.

Do you know if Apple stocks all items at their stores? I need to make a quick purchase in a day or two and online it takes 3 weeks for delivery.

        • +2

I don't think so. You'd either have to check stock online or call the specific store and ask if they have a particular item in stock.

Also, I'm not sure why someone else (not me) has negged you.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Probably because they seemed surprise that Apple Gift Cards only worked at Apple.

            • +2

@Richfield: Maybe they think itā€™s stupid question. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

(To me, thereā€™s no stupid questions, only stupid answers!)

  • +1

Can we use Coles gift cards to purchase these?

  • -2

    Reposting from the previous offer:

    Monthly Apple GC Discount Exam

Instructions: Read the scenario below and answer the questions. Your peers will be be scoring you with internet points. Submit your answers in the comment field below.

Answers will be revealed sometime tomorrow probably (or not whatever).

    Scenario 1

You've always dreamed of browsing OzBargain in style, so you've decided to upgrade to a new MacBook Pro 16". Your great-grand-nephew told you about a sweet deal using gift cards. You've never shopped at Coles before (it's in the next suburb across and you're an Aldi kind of person), but you like a good deal anyway so you bought $2000 worth of variable cards at the Coles smoko counter, along a tub of delicious Haagen Daaz ice cream as a surprise for Ms BedGrub.

Q1) How much did you spend at Coles?
Q2) How much did you pay for the Apple laptop (assume that you paid $9,968.98 for a fully specced 16" 10/32 Core, 64GB RAM, 8TB SSD MBP with FCP and Logic Pro)
Q3) What kind of saving did you make?
Q4) What other saving opportunities could have been made to lower the price?

Edit: Seriously jfc can we just agree that your overall outgoings are lowered by x% when you exchange money or equivalent coupons at either store in return for goods? If we're going to go into this level of detail, then why not account for Time Value of Money and inflation? Is there an accountant here who's will to do a write up in the forum that people can link to, and hopefully shutdown all these unconstructive flame wars and comment graveyards?

    • +3

It's not that hard to work out. You get $5 store credit for every 1000 flybuys points. Imagine a $100 apple product.

10% discount (about the best you can get on Apple), plus 5% OW price match, brings you to 1000.90.96 = $85.5

      At 20x points, a $85.5 purchase will get you $8.55 Coles credit = $76.95

Purchase the above gift cards with a Qantas rewards credit card, $85.5*1.25, upgrade domestic flights to business and get 6c/point for $6.4 = $70.53

Additionally, use that purchase to continue working towards your $3000 dollar required spend for CC churning. 130,000 Qantas FF for business class upgrades is $7800 worth, meaning you save another $222.3 = -$151.77.

Soo, all up you are saving 251.77%. Buying your $9,968.98 Macbook Pro 16" would result in a profit of $15,129.92 plus a free Macbook Pro, for a total profit of:

      $25,098.9

Definitely worth the trip to Coles.

      • +1

This is so close, but is unfortunately incorrect.

      • Exactly! Too easy. I did the same. Except I got $50 back from Klarna, too, meaning I made a profit of $25,148.90

But nobodyā€™s keeping score, so donā€™t feel bad.

      • If Qantas pts are worth that much more than the market give up your job and become a Billionaire trading them .
Very limited appeal tp one person only is the major problem .

        • +1

          So you mean I can't make 25k buying a macbook pro? :(

          • @nigel deborah: No, but you might be able to get one for free if you can run fast enoughā€¦

  • Was 15% off, then 30x points( = 15% off). Now 20x points(= 10% off).

Same as zip rewards, bank cc rewards , etc. they all were of value at the beginning, but gradually become less value.

Zip rewards exclude petrol and groceries now , didnā€™t at the beginning. The last promo they had was over the end of financial year and Iā€™ve paid all my big bills at the post office and got 200 to $300 in rewards I will not be surprised if they exclude that in the next promo.

    • App Store & iTunes gift cards towards the end of its life in Australia were sold at retailers from time to time at a 15% or 20% discount, but it was a 15% discount the vast majority of the time (unless you were like me and just went to Officeworks to leverage their price beat guarantee!).

I think Apple will bring back 30x points offers again in the future, but I think 20x points offers will be the most regular offering going forward.

      • +2

iTunes card were for "digital" products only where the margin is way way higher.
I remember time when some retailers were doing 50% discounts for iTunes cards.

    • Too many Gloating Turkeys on the Zip thread when NSW got out that killed Vics Golden Goose opportunity .

  • Sydney peeps, in which Coles have you seen the $500 gift cards?

    • I saw at least 30 at Coles Chatswood Chase last week.

      • -2

I like to load $20 on the variable $20-$500 cards, then self-checkout. Then I write ā€œ$500ā€ in the space provided. They are great gifts for Secret Santa / Kris Kringle. Watch their eyes light up!

    • After not getting the bonus points, I do not recommend getting the $500 gift cards.

  • Seems they've lowered the limit of 5000 points. If 5 of $500 variable gift card was purchased that's 50000 points was possible to get, however the points limit was lower to 45000 points in entire promotion period.

    • mental note to spread across multiple accounts.

  • Do you get 20x points for the odd amount? i.e $299 will give you 5980pts

  • Thanks OP. I nearly forgot I could get Flybuys points from this deal. I need the $50 card. I canceled my GTA Definitive Trilogy Switch game preorder, I will be buying the Apple iOS Remastered bundle before RockstarGames delist them for the bugged Definitive version just in case.

Some websites say ā€œfollowed by versions for iOS and Android in the first half of 2022.ā€ So it could be goodbye to the GTA Remastered Mobile editions in favour for the buggy Definitive Remaster. Because theyā€™re all removed from the PC Steam store now.

    • Edit: Actually sorry, gift cards excluded. I assume I can stack it with this 5x Flybuys app offer

      • +1

I have never been able to get a targeted Flybuys bonus points booster to work with gift card purchases at Coles, but there's no harm in you trying!

  • would the 30x offer come back before next year?

  • +3

Bought $600 worth of cards last night, saw the 600 points in my account just now. No bonus points!

    • +1

Iā€™m in the same boat. Two transactions on different Flybuys accounts at different stores. Neither have the bonus points applied. Must be a delay?

      • +1

Iā€™d surmise that there is a delay in crediting the bonus points (which is unusual, but not unheard of).

Any bonus points from gift card purchases are credited on a separate line from the standard points you earn for third-party gift card purchases at Coles.

IIRC, it took three days for some people to receive their points from purchasing Apple gift cards, so Iā€™d suggesting waiting another day or two before contacting Flybuys for assistance.

What denominations of gift cards did you purchase?

        • Bought 3x 200 on my acct. My wife bought 100 on her flybuys acct, no bonus points either.
