Cost to Replace Brake Pads on 2015 Subaru Outback?

Hey guys,

What's the going rate these days to replace brake pads and machine discs?

Was quoted $500 from Subaru (rear pads for Outback 2015). Seems a bit excessive.

Cheers

    Seems a bit excessive

Seems about right for a dealership.

Possibly cheaper at a brake specialist.

      Stealership*

  • $500 just for the pads or with discs too?

    • Just pads, and machine the discs…

Check the cost of rotor replacement vs machining. Often not much difference and a new set should last a lot longer. I had the front rotors on my Kia machined when they developed a shudder at about 50,000ks and within 6 months the shudder was back and had to replace them anyway. Put mid range DBA T2 discs on and 50,000ks later I haven't had an issue.

    • Will ask the question!

I recently paid $150 for front brake pads supplied and fitted

I'd ask around a few mechanics - you could probably buy the pads yourself for $42 - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/284178303353

and fit them yourself if you know which end of a spanner to hold - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSk3e0yLAR4

A little steep, you should be able to shop around and get the same for $350-$400ish
    $150 or so in labour
    $60 - $80 each to machine disks
$80 or so for some good Bendix pads

Mind you, if the discs are getting low you can get some OEM replacements from Supercheap for under a hundred bucks each.

  • Wheres the bloke that paid $3000 for pads and discs recently for his Merc…

Brake pads ~ $150 for both sides on the rear (Conservative
Machine Discs another $100 (new discs off ebay are around $130) - maybe purchase and get them to install?
    Labour ~$150 (conservative)

    $400 is fair.

Although if you do it yourself with pads off ebay and some elbow grease, screwdriver and a socket set you can get away with ~$100 for the brake pads installed.

    Don't machine the discs.

Biggest scam in car servicing. "Your brakes need machining". Pffft.

The last time I had to pay for pads and discs on my Audi Q5, cost $2,700. Seems European SUVs are circa $2000 - $3000

$500 seems very reasonable. Materials would be around $300 and $200 for the Labour and GST.

    • The Audi tax got you good.
Q5's should never be that much for brakes.
My Q7 was quoted at $1000 for all 4 corners - discs and pads.
decided to do it myself for ~450 all up.

    • You got touched.

Had this done on 2016 Outback this year, Subaru quote was ~$400, local Tyrepower did for $240. Definitely worth shopping around.

    • I got upset at my local tyrepower when I had the tyres changed. The nut broke and was told I could get away with driving on one less nut anyway.

That’s about right for a dealership. Cheaper elsewhere.

Depends on a lot of things.

Machining the disc's and labor will be the main costs here… You want to see if they are changing out the fluid as the same time.

It might be worth checking what sort of pad's are going in (im assuming the OEM/factory). For the money, you can find a lot of better pads in the market.

Chat to a smaller mechanic outlet and they can prob sort you out with a better pad, fluid change (if needed) for less money. Or if you have a mate with the tools and know how, changing brakes isn't hard and a local shop will machine the rotors for you for $60/each +/-.

Last week paid $220 for all new brake pads replacement (No disk work) for my Pathfinder 2018 4WD.

About 6 months ago I had to do the rear brakes on my MY15 Outback 3.6R. My mechanic charged me $195 for Bendix GCT pads supplied and fitted including cleaning and greasing the caliper slides. And an extra $60 to machine both rotors. Total cost $255.

You say "Seems a bit excessive"……. based on what comparison parameters?

Please advise the standard 3 quotes so we can compare as well.

Parts, specialist services, environmental disposal and labour. $?

  • Thanks guys. Paid $350 for pads and machining at the local mechanic. Nice guy too and will probably get more business in future.
