    • hold eligible status with a qualifying airline

The list of minimum "eligible status" is all gold level and above for international airlines (except Virgin Aust).

In the last couple of years, it would've been very difficult or impossible for many aussies to maintain such a high status, especially with international airlines.

Does it not defeat the purpose of having a 'status' if you make that status available to pretty much anyone?
      Fools and money I guess…

not at all, status is intended to garner customer loyalty, They are attempting to buy customers that are loyal to rival airlines and it is targeted at the high value customers. It is a effective incentive that costs them very little with a high potential ROI.

        • Yeah but if you are customer, why would you choose a product that is so common? The idea of having a status is get elevate yourself above the riff-raff.
I've been to the Qantas lounge a couple of times, it was like a train station. If I was paying for that I'd choose an airline that was a little more selective with their status points.

          • @1st-Amendment: huh? why does it affect you whether it is common or rare. The benefits are the same. You get gold for the FFP boost, booking and upgrade advantages and access to Qantas club. I couldn't give a crap who else has those benefits as long as they are available to me.

'Pretty much anyone' has gold status with another airline?

What's a quick way to earn this status credit? Not exactly flying internationally at the moment…

      • You could do it in a 24 hr period flying 10 back to back flights from Melbourne to Sydney

Jokes aside, status points only earned on flight legs and one short domestic flight earns you 10

      • Last year Qantas also had a similar Status match with 100 status credits required. You can earn these status credits from other means than just flying - for example BP had a promotion where you could earn 50 status credits by spending at least $50 on at least 5 occasions. This promotion also ran at the same time where Qantas was running a double status credit promotion! So for spending $250 you could have gotten 100 status credits and got Gold status :)
