Aren't these the same one (except grey instead of brown) they were "giving" away a few months ago?

they had these given away…? i was going to get, but this kind of turned me off somehow

I don't think this ever being given away. As these are quite high model (not highest of course), and I think the promotion was when you buy a full price Sony Mobile like Arc and it was given away as a package deal.

yeah i think so. Brown, instead of grey. Sound quality is very much exaggerated tho. These headphones deliver decent sound, but nowhere near the 'fantastic' range.

/edit: @gpo7377: yeah they were. Not exactly 'given away' but they cost $0.01, P&H included so yeahhh.

"30mm driver units for powerful bass and rich sound" - not 100% sure about this, but I am under the impression that a 30mm driver will produce weak bass.

First, I think someone has used the wrong terminology. The "driver" is usually considered to be the coil of wire that drives the diaphragm (speaker cone). A larger driver size gives more area for dissipating heat, which is important in speakers that fill a whole room with music, but hardly important for headphones.

Diaphragm (speaker cone) size is important for bass reproduction, but only in relation to the amount of air that has to be moved. If you want to fill a whole room with powerful bass, you'll need a 12-inch or 15-inch diameter speaker. If you only have to move the air inside the ear-cup of the headphones, 30mm should be fine for good bass reproduction.

In-ear headphones (like Etymotic brand) have much smaller speakers again, but can still produce powerful bass, because the volume of air is smaller again: just the air inside your ear-canal.
