Wildwood looks so nice, but 1k for a desk i cannot do

  • +2

These guys are basically a shop front for a factory out of Asia, there's so many other companies that make almost identical looking desks.

Also suggest looking the new Secret Lab gaming desk, worth a consideration if you're going to drop $1k on this…

    • +9

Secret Lab gaming desk isn't an electric sit-stand desk though which is half the point of this desk. Though it looks well designed, it looks pretty expensive for a fixed height desk.

    • +42

Being a shop front for a factory out of Asia is…90% of all businesses?

As far as I can tell, this is a popular brand. You also didn't link these "almost identical desks".

I don't know if you're right or wrong but if you're gonna dis a brand, back it up a little.

    • +12

Lol… Do you know that Secretlab and Omnidesk are under the same company?

    • +65

Yep - do yourself a favour and look at desks using Linak actuators. Companies like Omni and Zen use knockoff actuators from Jiecang. There's a reason these desk companies have such deep discounts - they're charging Linak prices for sub-par cheaper components.
It's probably not fair to say they're essentially Alibaba resellers, and many of of them provide a product that is fit for purpose, but the value isn't being met in my opinion.

Linak are a Danish brand and make all sorts of therapeutics, medical, manufacturing and scientific actuators. They have a several different desk leg column products. Look for a desk using DL5 column is you want 100kg, or DL6 for 160kg. IKEA subcontracted them to make the IDASEN table (which is IMO, the best value standing desk in terms of features, availability and stability).

The Linak bluetooth paddle options are really nice, and they have desktop and mobile apps, which I've found really useful.

I'm aware of a few products that use Linak actuators in Australia:
      - https://sitstanddesk.com/linak-powered.html
      - https://www.ergonomicsnow.com.au/products/linak-kick-and-cli…
      - https://www.consoleconcepts.com.au/sit-to-stand-desks.html
      - https://activdesk.com.au/store/Activ-Expandable-Kit-Electric…

The Ergomotion eDesk uses a slightly different Linak platform that only uses one motor, but it's still extremely capable up to 160kg (says 100kg, but I believe that's due to Ergomotion being overly cautious with any kind of safety claims).

Special thanks to panadol520 for opening my eyes on this rabbit hole with this comment

Happy to update this comment with any corrections!

EDIT: There is… another manufacturer of actuators. I don't know the name, but they're a German brand that Steelcase use in their fancy shmancy Flex table. I like this table, but it's twice the price of a good quality Linak model. Don't think it has Bluetooth either.

EDIT2: If you want wheels on your desk, you can install castors with M8 threads. I'm aware of people using them on their Linak desk, and I believe Zen desks also accept the same size.

      • +1

Where to get good castors? Bunnings?

        • +1

You can order castors from specialty furniture stores or aliexpress also.

        • +1

Bunnings have suitable castors that are $4.60 a pair - they're not rubber, but get the job done. AliExpress has a boatload too.

Make sure you get ones that have an M8 thread (also called 5/16" in freedom units) and rated to at least 50kg (which covers 160kg plus some more to account for the weight of the desk itself).

Zen desk sell some rubber coated castors, but they're like $50, I can't tell whether they're actually fatter than M8, but they appear to be so in in the photos. YMMV.

Do you know anything about the new Ikea "gaming" desks (UPPSPEL)? https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/uppspel-gaming-desk-black-s9943…

        • +3

IDASEN has better height and stability. UPPSPEL is as wobbly as the previous BEKANT, which, IMO, sucked hard and I was glad that someone took it off my hands via Gumtree.

I'm 90% certain it's JieChang - this appears to be the controller, with slight cosmetic gamer changes.

The desk itself is a slightly modified version of their generic platform, with a support strut to account for it being set back from the centre of the feet.

So, I'd say that IKEA/ROG are capitalising on the demand with some cheap products. Surprisedpikachuface.jpg

      • +1

        What about Desky?

        • +1

The same as omnidesk. I once asked what motors they use and the reply I got was one of the 2 main brands. Safe to say its not Linak.

      • +1

Bugger, here I believed Zen is actually made in Australia.

I guess I got deceived by the 'Brisbane based manufacturer' in the About Us section and thought it's really made in Australia.

        • +1

Assembly is classified as manufacturing. If they're throwing some desktops that are processed in-house, but whacking in it on a Chinese platform, I'm cool with that.

The one thing I will say about Zen that they do right, is that they actually put the effort into stabilising the desktop with some steel angle, as seen in their assembly video.

This is pretty important for timber, which has a tendency to absorb moisture from the air at various times of the year, causing cupping, which is the bane of doors, floorboards and tables. The only solution is to add breadboards, which add complexity, or aprons, which aren't super practical for a desk. The captive steel angle is actually a pretty nifty solution.

      • -1

However looking at the $$$ the equivalent table I purchased at Omnidesk would cost $200+ more which is quite a bit of a premium. Not sure if it's any more worth it for me tbh. If it was $50 or so more it would be a no brainer but that's a fair bit more imo

        • IMO, you're paying a premium for the Omni. It uses much cheaper components for a similar price mark.

          • @Bedgrub: Yeah I dunno man, 3-year warranty for supposedly much better components doesn't scream confidence to me. To each their own I guess

      • Any ideas if these linak frames are sold in Sydney? Shipping just kills it.

What desk top did you use?

        • Shipping for the eDesk is $70 flat rate across Australia.

I bought some reclaimed Black Butt timber from an old warehouse. Glued, sanded and polished it myself. Very heavy and hard to work this type of timber, and the dust is very irritating. Would not recommend lol.

          • +1

@Bedgrub: I’m glad that I have enlighten you with my limited knowledge. 😁

For the table top, I have used the Ikea Gerton (discontinued), it’s a solid beech wood and very easy to work with, it has 2 supporting beam underneath as well. I stained in dark walnut colour and put on some wipe on semi-gloss polyurethane to seal the wood. The end result is stunning. Watch this video https://youtu.be/dpl6tCkKubs

Alternatively, if you don’t want to work on the wood finish yourself, you can go with something like Ikea Karlby, it’s a thick wood veneer bench top.

            • @panadol520: Hey mate, I saw on another post that you’ve had experience with Console Concepts. Do you know how the Linak kit with 140kg lifting capacity compares with the IKEA Idasen in terms of stability? Which one would be more stable / is there a noticeable difference?

              • +3

@drakdaystar: Lifting capacity has nothing to do with the stability of the desk. The lifting capacity just mean how much weight the motor can lift and support, 70-100kg lifting capacity is more than enough most people.

The Ikea Idasen desk only has a lifting capacity of 70-75kg. It uses Linak DL11IC column which is inferior to DL6 or DL6IC in terms of lifting capacity. It also cheap out on some other components due to OEM aspect to save cost. However it's back by Ikea 10 years warranty so worse case they will just replace it if it breaks.

The stability of Idasen is very impressive when compare to the kick and click unit from console concept. It is due to the difference in leg design. You will find the Idasen much more stable especially in standing height.

The Idasen only comes with the basic lifting controller, but you can purchase a DPG1C controller and use it with Idasen, its a plug and play. DPG1C also has Bluetooth connectivity. You can turn on auto lift function through the Linak app. Once enabled, you can just double tap the controller up or down, and the table will goes to your pre-set height.

          • @Bedgrub: Which frame model did you endup purchasing?

      • Are you able to recommend a desk with a ergonomic curve at the front? Unfortunately none of the ones you linked seemed to have it :)

      • +1

Do you know how the stability of the desks you’ve listed compare to the IKEA Idasen? I really like how stable the Idasen is but want a desk with one touch controls to go to saved heights

      • +1

Thanks for your post @bedgrub. I just used this valuable info and went to Ikea to check out the Idasen but decided to go with the Ergomotion Edesk. I picked it up today and plan on assembling it over the weekend. I also went with the 4 memory positions and BT control. :)

        • +1

No worries - glad that I could be of assistance.

Also, good on you for making the effort to actually test out the merch!

  • Anyone have any experience with these?

    • +1

Yeah got one on a similar deal last black friday, the misso uses one every day.
Was pretty easy to set up, seems good quality. If we had the room I would get one for my WFH set up as well, definitely dont regret it.

    • Yep, I have the Wildwood Acacia one that I use for working from home and it's great.

    • +1

I have the XL. It sags in the middle … They just suggested tightening screws. I wouldn't recommend.

    • I have one, partner has one, brother has one and two friends have one. The Omnidesks work and the quality is good. Mine is the oldest at 2 years and none of us have had any issues at all.
I move from sit to stand and back 3-4 per day and have confidence that this desk will last a long time.

  • +2

Just me or are these quite expensive? I’ve seen electric riser legs for about $300 I think somewhere here before. Then just need a tip from Bunnings or DIY.

    • I swear they used to be $700odd when I first looked at them

      • +1

They probably were half that then Covid working at home came along. Profit. Just like web cams.

  • I'm looking for cable management bar that never seem to go on sale.

    • Doesnt store wide include the cable management bar?

      • +1

They've removed the banner for the cable management bar and standing pad

        • Fairly expensive and sort after accessories I might add.

  • +9

I got the large bamboo desk with cable management tray about a year ago. Looks brilliant, and works perfectly.

    • What's that box on the left? Is it your computer? Taking heaps of space! :-)

      • +1

Yes, NR200 ITX case. Very small for the power that's inside (Ryzen 5600x, GTX3080).

    • +11

I like how you have a keyboard and two mini keyboards.

It means you can put one foot each on the 50% boards and use your hands for the full size. Probably isn't very ergonomic though.

      • +1

Haha, the non-split was for the girlfriend and the split was mostly for taking to work. I exclusively use a tiny 34-key keyboard at work now.

    • sick setup. but damn looks pricey.

      • +1

I managed to get the PC components right before the chip shortage kicked in. Got the GPU for $800 less than it's retailing for now.

But yes… a few grand in that picture… No regrets!

        • super jelly, I'm shopping for a PC atm but just can't pull the trigger on the insane prices on gpus. I'm thinking of getting a split keyboard too. I think everything you got is what I'll eventually build up to.

          • +1

@POSITIVEVIBESONLY: If/when you go down the split rabbit hole, hit me up. Happy to build you one. Even have some leftover PCBs for Sweep or A.Dux :P

            • @trankillity: my mate keeps hyping PCBs and lubing your switches, telling me he can't go back. also my leds on my keychron k2 just failed yesterday. Thanks for the offer, I'll probs do some research on what's on the market. Little annoyed on the build quailty on keychron.

    • +1

      I love your setup

    • So the only thing in that picture within my picture is the Daiso-looking rubbish bin.

  • +1

Overpriced. IKEA have recently released electric sit/stand desks for under $400 with an actual 10 year warranty that can be relied upon.

    • +6

Got a link to the one that you're referring to?

    • No doubt it is more pricey, but you are paying for a more premium experience including a dual motor table. Unless you are comparing with Kenshi. Additionally I need a desk which can go lower than 65 unfortunately. Been playing with the work one and found ~63ish was the sweet spot for me

    • The IKEA desks have a few negatives going for them.

      1) No profiles. Both me and my partner use this PC, so we each have our own profile for both sitting and standing.
      2) The Rodulf is just fibreboard/honeycomb tabletop, which is pretty bad. The Bekant is at least particleboard/melamine coating.

If you want a more premium tabletop, definitely recommend the Omnidesk with the bamboo top, or wildwood tops.

  • Are Omnidesks easy to assemble?

    • +5

These desks are heavy af - any height adjustable ones for that matter. Definitely need 2 people if you can't lift a bag of 10kg rice easily.

      • Did the delivery company carry it into your place? My apartment has 5 flights of stairs and no elevator…

        • Nvm I asked on livechat and they're not allowed to enter.

  • +2

Bought the XL Pro 2020 in the July sale. Fantastic desk, took a bit to setup as it was just me but very happy with the purchase. Grabbed the drawer extra which looks sharp, the clip-on powerboard, cable management bar (was free with the desk at the time) and a headphone stand extra.

    • Does your XL sag? Another user above reported some sag and im after an XL

      • +2

Zero sag, maybe they put the legs on unevenly?

        • Who knows, cheers tho

  • Damn, those Audioengine 5+ speakers sold out quickly! No surprise.
Anyone know what they were selling for?
Wonder if you can get a raincheck.

  • Anyone know how good these desk are in terms of stability and speed?

    • These should have a fair few video reviews, should be fairly easy to find and help you make your own decision

    • +1

I have the medium (153cm) one in Acacia wood and it's very stable. Speed-wise it's pretty good too. No complains. Have a 40" monitor and a mid-sized ATX PC mounted on the bottom right and it still moves at a consistent speed. No wobble.

  • +1

Omnidesk has a very inconvenient warranty RMA.

Highly recommend ZenDesk. Wait for their sale.
You can price war with desky.

    • Desky got lots of negative reviews about their shipping delays. They use Aramax so I'm not surprised.

      • I had shipping delays with Zen Space Desks for over 1 month, escalated it via live chat and got it shipped within the next 3 days

    • Can you please elaborate? I've seen similar comments.

  • I bought an electric desk from Elevate Ergonomics a bit over 2 weeks ago - says on the website delivery in 4 days but when you order they send you an email that says because of Covid orders are delayed and please dont contact them asking where it is. A week ago they sent an email saying it has been packed. Still waiting on one to say it has been sent.

  • +4

I'm always torn seeing OmniDesk promotions - on the one hand, looks like a good deal in isolation and good value. On the other hand, if you follow them on social media, they are ALWAYS having some variety of sale at around 30% off just like this, which makes me think their quoted discount is complete bulls**t and this is essentially standard pricing with Kogan-esque sales tactics applied to generate a sense of urgency.

  • Have the small size that i bought last year.

Its pricey but do recommend as its sturdy, motor has worked well and looks good (i got a complete black one).

Hasnt used any other but compared to the ikea ones that i played around with in store this is much better. Worth thr price for me especially im using it for so long everyday

    • Does your desk surface get scratched easily?

  • +1

Have had one of these for around 6-9 months - has been brilliant.

  • +2

I had one of the black Omnidesks and absolutely hated the rough finish. They are designed to work with deskmats but that rough finish still didn't cut it for me. I replaced that with a bamboo desk instead, but there were raised bubbles in the finish which annoyed TF outta me. I eventually got a refund after trying three different desk tops and took my money to Zen Space desk instead. I stuck with the bamboo sit/stand desk and beefed it up with the pixel on-desk power access points and two of the 1Plug power boards to sit in the cable tray under the desk. After using it for over 12 months now, I absolutely love it. The other upside to this desk top is that it's a great deal thicker than the Omnidesk desktops. The Omnidesk had a great deal of flex in their larger desktops (1800mm) but the one I have now is thicker with zero flex. Zen Space Desk customer service has been fantastic also.

In saying that, Omnidesk customer service was also fantastic, but when comparing the quality of both manufacturers, I'm 100% satisfied with the switch to the one I have now.

    • I really loved the rough black surface. Each to their own

  • +1

Any recommendations for a non-standup desk? All the deals and links are generally for standup desks generally which i'm not after

  • Thoughts on whether they'll come out with a better deal for black Friday? Last year (or the year before) they did 50% off

    • +2

This is their Black Friday deal

    • That would have been 2019 (before COVID). Probably not going to see discounts like that for a while. Maybe next year or the year after.
