Cheapest One Way Van Rental Company Melbourne to Newcastle/Taree

We're moving from Melbourne to the mid-north-coast in search of warmer weather and more pleasant lockdowns surrounds should it ever curse us again. Anyone done the hard yards looking for the cheapest rental company for a one-way (Transit style van or even a mini truck)? I have been looking but I thought I'd ask the question. Returning the van to Melbourne is cheaper but I'd like to avoid it.

Thanks in advance.

  • Maybe look for a truckie that is looking to backload?

I had a look at it a while ago. The truck mileages charges ended up making it not worth it for me. Usually the first 100ish kms are free per day. In the end the costs were pretty close to getting a relocation company to do it for you. I decided to sell most of my furniture and just buy again with the exception of my bed which I got on a backload for 400ish.

Maybe the cheapest would be hiring a trailer to attach to your car? Good luck.

  • Thanks - we're renting out our place here and will try to rent it furnished and our NSW rental is furnished so there is not so much to bring that wouldn't fit in a van. I was thinking about one of those campervan relocations and then just flying back one way. Beats the 3K+ I've been quoted for a one way rental.

  • Have you thought of a campervan relocation, a 6 or 8 berth motorhome will have a fair bit of room in it and doubles for accommodation if you want to drive over a couple of days.
Some Melb-Syd relocations will include 1500km allowance and a good travel window at only dollars a day, some even have a small fuel allowance. Drive to Newy, drop your stuff, take motorhome back to Sydney and catch the train back.

Yes have been looking at that option - waiting for the right dates to come up - cheers

  • silly thought, but might be worth a look … Melbourne car prices are pretty cheap, buy a van (since you have the cash to get all new furniture), drive it to your new country town, sell the van (probably for a profit) then use that money for furniture …

only issue is breaking down, but if you get something descent enough (while still being cheap) you could make a small windfall
