Meh, $179 has been the price on the Optus site for a while now, they just didn't have any stock.

    • I just bought 2 from them.

I read Whirlpool sometime ago, the one from Crazyjohn is unlocked and no Optus bloatware for $199

But I don't own it, cannot 100% sure.

You don't need to pay to unlock it, just follow whirlpool instrucitons.

    NO DEAL

1.) The Optimus Phone can be bought for $107 and is a better phone IMO because of more RAM and better community support - http://uniquemobiles.com.au/Items/lg-optimus-one?&caSKU=lg-optimus-one&caTitle=LG%20Optimus%20One%20P500%20Black%20(Australian%20Stock)%20Android%202.2

2.) The Motorola Defy goes for around $220 and is MUCH better than this phone, yet only $40ish more

Optimus is slower CPU and around the same RAM, no way it is better.

Also Ace looks a lot better.

    • So what? It's a good price for what it is.

      • Yes, I didn't say $107 for Optimus is not good price but he said Optimus is better than Ace which I cannot agree.

    • EDIT: Nvm, GSMarena's specs listed are wrong, apologies on my behalf, however I still believer there are better phones out there for the price.

    http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone2=3516

The Ace has 290MB ram compared to 512MB, also the ace has a crappy 320 x 240 resolution compared to a 480 x 320 resolution

Trust me, it makes a difference.

Also don't forget that the Optimus is over $70 cheaper.

Better community support as well, better CPU doesn't mean sh*t when it has a small amount of ram and a crappy stock OS without much community support.

p.s I know you negged me, lol.

    • This is not Ace.

      It is Galaxy Y.

      This one is Ace
      http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_ace_s5830-3724.php

About the RAM, 512MB I think is quite confusing sometime, some phone spec shows the usable amount of RAM, some shows total RAM.

Like my Acer Liquid Metal also said 512MB but the available amount about the same as the Ace. So the 512MB from Optimus is not available to use but the 290MB from Ace is user available.

      • My bad on that, though the title does state a galaxy ace…

      • +2

Acer Liquid Metal @ $128 is still probably best value for money even today (pity it is no longer available). However, 290MB user space available is a far stretch.

The only decent value for money Android phone at the moment is probably LG Optimus Spirit (aka LG Optimus Net), but only when you get 15% off - $84 basically (Target had it on special). ~$3 to unlock (check eBay). It is no where near as good as Liquid Metal though.

However, all these sub-$200 phones have very limited flash ROM space.

Deal is bad, can get it for cheaper anywhere.

    • Mattwilko - not that I would necessarily want this phone - but where can you get it below $179?

    • +1

Do you have a link where you can get it cheaper? If you have I want one.

    • Yes - I haven't been able to find it cheaper than Optus. It must be due a price drop pretty soon. Where have you seen it?

  • +1

This is definitely NOT a good deal if you are going to pay $80 to unlock on top of the $179.

    Otherwise - maybe.

    • You don't have to pay $80 to unlock you just have to spend $80 on phone credit then change carriers. I know it's a pain but just keep your old phone with the sim in it until you've used up the $80 credit which probably won't take long at all if you're using a telstra one but hey that's free credit rather than just throwing $80 away for a quick fix.

      • Or find someone to unlock it more cheaply. Or use it on a compatible service provider eg I think Optus locked phones work with TPG (don't quote me on that)

        • Yes any optus reseller.

  • I have the Telstra version of this phone.
I love the phone and it is a bargain for what it is but would only get 600hrs of Standby if there was 200hrs in a day….

  • I bought one 3 weeks ago from uniquemobiles (Australian stock) for $185 including delivery and unlocked.
It looks like they now have an Easter special on the unlocked Ace for $189 including free SD card reader (worth $19).
I think you have to add $14.80 for postage though, but still a good deal compared to this one.

    • Depends if you want the Telstra Next G version (850 MHz) or this one (3G 900/2100 MHz).

    • As I recall, that previous uniquemobiles offer, and the current one, are both for the Next G Telstra phone version GT-S5830T, rather than the Optus GT-S5830. That seems to affect the bands covered. See http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/samsung_galaxy_ace

    • What's the standby time like? Specs above say up to 600 hours (25 days) but I find that hard to believe.

  • I want the Samsung Galaxy W for around $250 unlocked. Hope there is a deal for this phone soon.

I think Huawei X3 $79 from Vodafone is a much better value for money than this phone.

    • The X3 is a good phone for the price but specs aren't up to the Ace. The Ace has a gorilla glass display (display is also slightly larger), faster CPU, MUCH better camera with LED flash, centre button is a physical button not touch-sensitive (some users prefer this). Downside of the Ace is there is no front-facing camera and video recording appears to be not as good as the X3.

You get what you pay for. I do agree with you though, the X3 is fantastic value for money. Can you unlock it for free on the Vodafone website?

      • I was excited about the Ace until I saw it can't do Flash…. bah. Otherwise the phone looks good, and it has Gorilla glass too. :) When will we have a phone like this, but a more decent CPU that supports flash, for <$200?

    • Vodafone Huawei X3 for $69 @ Woolworths

      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/66660

  • Even if you do unlock it, it will still have the Optus logo when turned on, which i find very irritating

  • Out of stock again…

  • Would someone please confirm if I buy this at an Optus store ($199), I still get the 'boxed' contents? (the box itself when I checked instore didn't mention any of the items)

    From above:
    Boxed Contents info

•Boxed Contents Battery, travel adaptor, Quick start guide, 2GB Micro SD card, CD, Cable, headset

Thanks if someone can help me out!
