How Long Is Too Long for a Delayed Item Dispatch at Kmart?

Hi all,

Never posted on the forums before so apologies for any mistakes.

So, I ordered the 3 Piece Whitehaven Modular Set (outdoor sofa) from Kmart. Paid around $65 for delivery which I wasn't too happy with as it was not optional. It also brought the item total to $400, more that I would otherwise think of spending at Kmart. It was supposed to arrive later that week. Easy done.

Or not. I was originally told 4-7 business days for delivery. Got tracking the next day, but it never updated. Called after 8 business days, and told that they couldn't follow up until 14 business days later.

14 b-days later, called and told it'd be another week due to delays. Apparently the courier had never collected the item and it was waiting in the warehouse.

Contacted the courier, told that no, the delay was with Kmart and they hadn't received anything.

Called Kmart again, I was told that they were very sorry, there had been a delay at the Truganina distribution centre and that my order was being marked as "priority". The representative on the phone would be "very surprised" if it didn't arrive within the next week, and to call if it didn't.

It didn't. Contacted the SMS line, got no help. Asked to "kindly give [them] time to process the order". Then told the delivery time frame was 4-14 days from order. Called the next day, told there was nothing they could do, the item was still marked as "priority" and would arrive in the next week.

It's now Thursday of the next week. It has been 25 business days since I received tracking. Am I wasting my time with this? The couch was the only one I could find that would fit on my balcony and in my budget but I'm not sure all this chasing up will be worth it. So many lunch breaks wasted!

I'm typically a very patient person and can put up with a lot, but I think even I've hit my limit. Would it be unreasonable to keep chasing up after it?

Apologies for the essay. It helped to get it all written out, and knowing the steps I've taken.

tl;dr: Item from Kmart not shipped for over a month, should I wait it out or give up and cancel?

What’s your alternative if you cancel

    • No couch and $400 back in my pocket? Back to square one, I guess. I kind of hate that I know I'm just going to put up with it, though as another commenter said, it might be worth seeking a delivery refund.

I had the same thing recently with a bedhead from Kmart.
The tracking said "the seller hasn't given us the item yet". This was also apparently only coming from the other side of Brisbane.
Eventually I SMS'd their support line, they said basically "suck it up, there are delays, just wait and we'll tell you when it's coming" and then it showed up the next day.

    I wouldn't use them again.

    • That's exactly what mine has said from the get go, and it is also sitting in a warehouse half an hour away. I'd be happy to pop down and pick it up myself!

And I got basically as helpful a message from the SMS line too. It was useless and I had to explain the whole thing every time I messaged the number.

If this thing comes or not, I'm really not interested in shopping with them again either.

Lol, wait til you hear the wait times for new vehicles.

All industries and delivery networks are experiencing major delays at the moment. Going to get even worse next month.

    • I am so very, very thankful my rustbucket is holding up.

But yes I've noticed a lot of items out of stock recently. I'm making more of an effort to shop in store for Christmas this year and I think that is working in my favour.

The couch was the only one I could find that would fit on my balcony and in my budget but I'm not sure all this chasing up will be worth it.

So do you want the couch or not?

You would, IMHO, be entitled to a refund in this circumstance.

But, if your statement above is true, that means "no couch for you" and is that what you really want?

I agree that Kmart is useless when it comes to stock control and shipping, and would only use them in circumstances where I have no other option, or am ultimately not desperate to get the item.

    • Yeah I guess it does come down to that, doesn't it?

And things are only going to get worse so even if miracle of miracles one turns up, it might take months again to arrive and then I'd be plum in summer without one.

I suppose if nothing else, I know never to shop Kmart again.

Call and ask for complaints and make a formal compliant and see if the complaints people can get it sorted ASAP and request a refund on the delivery as they did not delivery in the time promised. Also check the prices for Black Friday and if they have been reduced then ask for a refund on the difference.

Worst case cancel the order and get a full refund.

    • I've been toying with asking for a delivery refund so thanks for bringing that up!

And wow yeah that's a good idea. I notice they still have them in stock so that might be the way to go 😉
