Sony has just reduced their online price to $3999.
Videopro has it for $3960.
Redeem $500 cash back.

Try price match with Sony online.
Then stack with CR 4% cash back when you buy from Sony website. Net cost around $3334!

If you can wait, keep it in your cart and wait for a bigger % from either CR or SB before paying (sometimes they offer 10%).

Note that this the latest ILCE7RM4A model with better screen. At this price, why would anyone pay for the lesser A7 IV at $3988 without cash back!

[Edit 26/11] SB and CR have 10% cash back today, bringing net cost down to around $3100!

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2021

  • Noob question, Can you further explain "wait for a bigger % from either CR or SB"

    • +1

you can put this on the cart forever and the price will stay $3999. Might take and your chances and wait til before the $500 cashback is over as sb or cr may decide to give 8% cashback again in the near future

      • 👍

    • Actually that may not work. You might need to price match with a store first to keep that price, otherwise it will reverts to the Sony store's latest price when you pay.
      Try https://www.videopro.com.au/p-12684-sony-ilce7rm4a-full-fram…
      1)Create a Sony account,
2)Add the camera to your cart,
3)Request a price match online from Sony, the cart will update with the new price,
4)Wait for the next CR or SB promotion where they sometimes have 10% cashback.
      5)Buy from cart!

      • this is a better deal, $3960 vs $3999

        • I found that after I saw the drop on Sony site LOL. Deal updated.

  • If photography is your main concern then this is better than the A7iv. If you do 50% photo 50% video like me then the A7iv is better. Depends on what you need

    • +1

Well I agree with you to some extent but that flippy touchy screen on A7 IV is a game changer.

    • +2

tbh unless you can really utilise the pixel in this camera, A74 is a better buy.

      • But if you need those pixels (and I do), the A7RIV is a simply amazing camera. Nothing else like it on the market (unless you go for a $8k-$9k medium format 100MP GFX100S camera).

But damn. I'm having to upgrade my computer to handle the images. 125+MB raw files are nuts.

In short: Go with the A7IV :)

Great camera! My current camera. This is amazing for photos. I occasionally squeeze in video works for fun.

Another noob question: Mirrors in 2021?! Just like Grandpa had. I guess vinyl records are still popular, so why not?

    • +6

      It's mirrorless

      • -6

Had me fooled. Why the "prism" hump on the top then? Just so it looks like an old-style SLR to please the conservative types?
My God, it even has a big projection on the front right where the motor-drive would be. It is desperately trying to look like a vintage 35mm film camera.
All that is missing is the thumb lever :-)

        • +4

It's not for look, it houses the EVF, most mirrorless cameras have the same hump for that.

        • It's a tried and tested form factor. Camera companies can't afford to try something radical and have it fail. Everyone is used to it, if it ain't broke, hey fix it?

Plus, today's cameras still need stuff inside them; batteries and computer chips. They take up quite a bit of space. The battery is pretty chunky.

And the big "projection" makes it easier to hold. Hell, I think they could've made it a bit bigger, my pinkie slips off the bottom on the A7III.

          • +2

@Omk4r123: U can get an L bracket that extends the grip a little bit, fits my pinkie just right.

            • @ijnkongo25: Thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely look into that. An L bracket looks much more appealing than getting a full fledged battery grip like I was originally planning to do.

Is Smallrig a good brand for L brackets? Seems to be very common.

              • @Omk4r123: IMHO, brand doesn't matter. I bought a $35?$50? L bracket and I'm pretty happy with it. (has an adjustable section and a hidden allen key too)

        • The A7C would be the solution to your gripes with the traditional layout. As for the grip, having a firm hold to be able to adjust fstop and exposure via the dials helps you from dropping your camera. The hump at the top also allows for the hot shoe to attach flash units to. Plus as Omk4r123 said, its a familiar form factor that photographers are comfortable with

        • i guess in your analogy, all model cars trying to looks like vintage cars.

  • Can you choose to have a smaller raw file? 61mp file is not easy to deal with

    • You can choose compressed Raw, but it is not lossless. Lossless compressed raw is a new feature with a7s3, a7m4, a1.
I think you can try to convert them to DNG if u r just worried about the long-term storage, should be a lossless conversion.

      • Not sure if the exclusion was on purpose, but the A7R IV can shoot compressed and uncompressed RAW.

        • Lossless is the keyword here

          • -1

            @ijnkongo25: Uncompressed is lossless.

            • @PeppaPigDidNthngWrng: Nope. There are generally normal compressed RAW which is lossy, uncompressed raw which is obviously lossless, and lossless compression which reduces the file size while not losing any data (only for A7S3, A1, A7M4 for Sony).

    • +1

Isn't the main selling point of this camera the high megapixel count? There might be better options out there for you if not interested in 61MP… The A7 III would be less than half the price at below $1.9k after cashback.

      • I am just comparing to the a7 mk4, if it's similar price the a7r4 is tempting, but will need to deal with the big 61mp file.

        • +1

At this price (with cash back), you can try it out and if it does not suit, sell it. You will get all your money back easily.

      • +1

        its around 1700$ after cashback.

    • +3

If you're getting a camera like this you probably shouldn't be using a core 2 duo running Windows vista.

    • As ijnkongo25 said, you can have compressed (or uncompressed) RAW.

Uncompressed RAW is 125+MB per image.

But if you're going to compress, you may as well shoot JPG, imo.

And regardless of JPG or RAW, you want a very modern computer.

FYI, SB and CR have 10% cash back today, bringing net cost down to around $3100!

    • Thanks for the post. I've been waiting for this.

Quick question - Do you know if I try to price match VideoPro at 3960, if the SB will still track? Wasnt sure if tracking worked if Sony adds it to your cart or the cart is left unattended.

      Thanks!

      • +1

I've bought 4-5 cameras/lenses from Sony Online using price matching and cashrewards/shopback tracked for all of them.
