New Honda Civic 2022 Overpriced?

I was browsing some new cars that are coming in and I noticed the new Honda Civic 2022 priced at $47200 Driveaway.

I'm blown away. This car is overpriced to the t*ts. And the are only offering one model VTi LX.

I know that Honda's been hit hard by the shortage of chips and also sale figures plummeting. But this isn't going to help them at all.

What do you guys think?

Maybe I'm just having a sook. Hahaha

they must be dreaming, rav4 cruiser hybrid is a best selling car for a reason. id take than over the over priced honda any day of the week.

    • Yer. Although I have dissapointed with lack of EV in Toyota. The idiots are at least 3-4 years behind the competition. 15 behind Tesla.

From what I understand Honda have moved to a Fixed price structure - which will probably see Honda go out of business in the next 5 years.

Simply put the Aus car market is 'too competitive' and Honda have done ZERO innovation since the V-tec engine.

I currently drive a Civic and it is a 'good car' but there isnt a chance in hell i would by 47k for another one even with the pad up features. That price point is far removed from reality, even in a sellers market that is just insane.

From what ive read Toyota have solved the 'semiconductor' issues which means the sellers market is going to come to an end in 2022

  • Mercedes A180 Hatch $49,889.00

      Yes junk.

      • +1

Better than a base model Honda.

  • Secondhand car values have been high for a while now due to the supply issues created during the pandemic / lockdowns and Aussies turning to holidays around Australia rather than overseas and wanting to upgrade their existing cars.

If Honda can get away with selling new cars like that for this price then it will have a flow-on effect to other brands also.

47k for honda sedan is definitely overprice no matter what premium features they throw in.

Hate to see what the TypeR will come in at…have be high 50k or low 60k….
As for not worrying about volumes, what a croc….. they’ve on a road to ruin and I don’t think they’ll be around in the next 5yrs.

  • Honda automotive has been in a coma for the last two decades, they're just riding into the sunset.

Honda in Australia is a marketing disaster textbook case, they tell everyone how they are OK with low and very low volumes of sales. I don't know who's doing their business cases, but it's certainly not someone with business sense.

47K is a crazy price, given the alternatives in Aus.

Honda Australia is trying to go upmarket

They are trying to make up the margin due to slow selling cars by increasing prices

Honda will disappear from Australia in the next 5 years I think.

Plus SUV is the new battle ground now not sedans/ hatch

  • they think they can get away with this. all features are 10 year behind 10 years

  • +1

Honda ditched their sales team and dealers so they don't have to put up with the public laughing at them on this stupid price.

  • +1

This is just an excuse for Honda to exit the market when the sales tank

  • Has anyone recently bought a car? I feel like dealers aren't even open to the idea of negotiating these days. Why knock a few K when the next sucker is willing to pay the asking price and then some?

    • Yes because they know there’s a long wait due to the chip shortage, production delays, shipping delays, etc due to the pandemic.

People want new cars but the dealers know they cannot get them elsewhere so they don’t budge much on prices.

      • Whole climate has changed, noticed how they are not even advertising trade in deal anymore.
when 1/5 of customers want a 50k Rav4 hybrid or CX8 with 5 month wait time, they know all those customers are paying by loan.

  • Honda has never been on my new car shortlist and never will. My wife once wanted to look at one. I did it. It was an awful csr.

  • Slow death of the ICE vehicle.
Supply Chain and chip issues mean manufacturers have to increase costs to reduce promised delivery times.
Raise revenue for building EV factories and paying down debt which is tied back to financing promised cars to build further factories. —> Bankrupt.

    Legacy car companies are f****d.

    • Tipping legacy car companies will do alright in the transition to electric. I think you are right that a few will go the way of Kodak, but companies like GM, Toyota, Kia / Hyundai along with euro brands like Audi and BMW will be the dominant players.

A few new companies will enter the market, probably from China and India as well as the USA.

I'm a Honda fan boi so would like to think they will be around. Not too sure though as I feel their last 10 years has been shit.

Man, if only they released the PHEV Jazz here, I'd buy in an instant.

  • aren't all top variants always overpriced?

  • Even if it was EV it's pretty expensive for a hatch… but at least it compares to other EV hatches out there.

But for what they are offering now, no way anyone is buying one! (unless they are blind Honda fans and haven't seen just how little value they are)

  • Of course it is. I got Skoda Superb for the same price (ex demo) in 2019. Such a shame that the chip shortage has caused this mess.

  • Its not same Honda civic as old model, this one is Turbo engine. They will release more models in future without turbo which will be cheap.

    • Nope, the current 10th gen Civic has a 1.5T engine. Probably the same engine as the 2022.

  • Crv will be 100k? 🐒

  • +2

Wow $47k for a Civic VTi LX. I would expect Type R at that price range

  • That might be just the rrp price like everything else. Regardless, I really hate the way car manufacturers like to tack on thick bezelled lcds as their center display. Looks super ugly to me.

    • +1

Agency model, no haggling. So $47k is the final price

  • +2

It is a shame, they used to make such great cars. I still have my Honda Accord Euro which i love to drive but I would be hard pressed to buy any of their newer models.

  • Tell them they're dreaming

  • +3

Honda are just rotating towards the US market. They are leaving F1 as an engine supplier but investing in IndyCar. They are a massive business and Australia is a rounding error in the books - it would not be surprising if they make more money in Australia selling lawnmowers and edgers than cars.

If you currently own a Honda, selling it now whilst resale values are high is something to consider.

  • Bold move, but I think ultimately they'll have to drop the price to get sales

  • If you read the article it says from $31k. The available one atm is $47k which is a common situation atm due to parts shortage, land rover did the same for the new model too, manufacturers are obviously only going to be using what limited capacity they have to only make the premium models.

Base model was $25000 in 2016

  • Just googled Mazda 3 top spec about $46,500. So $500 extra for a top spec Honda equivalent - wtf is going on!

I remember buying a brand new GOLF MKV GTI in 2008, it was $42,500 with nearly all the goodies included!

  • I bought this in 2016 brand new when this design first came out for $36000.
Go buy a BMW 2 series it's a nicer drive than this and they will give you discounts

  • Shrug. In the past they have run in parallel
    $20k thailand sedan
    $40k turbo japan hatch

  • Honda has suffered since Dr. Soichiro Honda passed. He steered the company through the lens of motorsport with great engineering and driver focus.
They still have some mojo — witness the S660 — but that remained exclusively for their domestic consumption. Seemed like they figured if it wasn't suited to the US, there was no point ramping up production for export. This is despite thousands of people declaring a serious interest in a rumored S1000.
Without even a product or marketing.

Honda of 20-30 years ago would have done it, all from Suzuka. Despite globalising with factories on most continents and the supposed commercial advantages they provide, Honduh just couldn't be bothered.

    Cadoges just released this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfvwWJiyHLk

  • Perhaps the other solution is just to buy a different make and model?

Still better than how overpriced Porsches are.

    • Yea, I'd compare a Porsche and a Honda Civic… absolutely in the same class.

      • Road & Track magazine did, in 1984.

        • BMW X5 got 4wd of the year once… .magazines credibility = non existant

          goes on who pays most..

          • @pharkurnell: R&T did scientific-level testing back in the day. They were obsessed with max G-readings on skidpans, as well as lap times and 0-60 times.
Can't argue with history though. Millions of owners past and present, some of whom still race the things. Mountain of sentiment and positive opinion can't be BS.

Finally, ONE historic fact that puts things into context, and shows the potential of the platform. Actual results:

      • How they are both rubbish?

        • Where did I say they were?

  • Anyway, as a Old Honda user, really don't want to see Honda out of Business in Australia, I own Honda Civic twice, the latest drive more then 21 years, more then Three hundred thousand kilometres, Engine never give me problem, Gear Box near give me problem, Radiator replace once, Air conditioning compressor replace once, then just every Ten thousand kilometres regular service, replace Engine oil Filter, Air Filter, Fuel Filter every Fifty thousand kilometres replace, Timing Belt every One Hundred thousand kilometres replace, then drive like new, 1 litre E91 for 10.5 to 11km, Two more Honda one is CRV, one is Accord, all run very well, try to get a new one Two years ago but somehow didn't do it, now Car prize up Seven to Ten thousand Dollars, So so so regret it.
Anyway, HRV or Civic Hatch entry level current price still good Buy if they suit you.

You picked the premium model of civic of course is higher price. Honda has always been higher price compare to other brands. I think you are just having a sook.

    • Yeee true except this time around they only have one which is their top trim offered. Unless you are suggesting paying today's dollars for 5 year old tech? (The one you linked is the previous model)
