New Honda Civic 2022 Overpriced?

I was browsing some new cars that are coming in and I noticed the new Honda Civic 2022 priced at $47200 Driveaway.

I'm blown away. This car is overpriced to the t*ts. And the are only offering one model VTi LX.

I know that Honda's been hit hard by the shortage of chips and also sale figures plummeting. But this isn't going to help them at all.

What do you guys think?

Maybe I'm just having a sook. Hahaha

    Thanks for making my day!

    $50k for a civic… my god…

    • If I remember rightly, my first Civic, brand new, cost me $2300.

You PUNKING ME here??? Is this real? Is it a typo? Surely it's 27k….

Mazda's 3 was fighting it out with Toyota's Corolla for biggest selling car. Then Mazda released the new model 3 at way higher price, and its sales halved. Now Honda's prices have gone up and its sales have collapsed. The Corolla is only as popular as it is because its now largely bought by fleet buyers based on Toyota's reputation for good second hand values, which was a sales model that led to Commodore and Falcon dying. One by one the Japanese are abandoning that market segment, and Australia generally, to the Koreans.

If the Mazda 3 and Honda Civic experience is any indication, it is that Australians want a good bargain when they buy a small/family car, not a prestige product. Everyone still thinks they have good products, but they don't buy them. They buy something Korean that might not be as prestigious, but its nearly as good, its just as well built, and its cheaper. And only the Japanese companies that have addressed that are surviving.

And next it'll be the Chinese car manufacturers with even cheaper cars. And what will get them established will be cheap electric cars.

      • +5

We avoid French cars and Scomo avoids French submarines.

    • A Corolla is not on the same level as a Mazda 3 anymore though.

Last 2 generations Mazda have really stepped up their game in terms of interior quality, drivability and tech. They've pretty much left the other Japanese automakers behind in that regard - and are basically the only one's that currently compete with entry level Euro counterparts.

A fully optioned top of the line Camry doesn't come close in terms of fit and finish of a Mazda 6. Get in a Honda and it's instantly noticable how cheap everything looks and feels.

    • around my neighbourhood, those chinese suv/trucks are showing up everywhere, followed by (what looks like 2nd hand) teslas

    https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/2022-honda-civic-price…

Honda sold an average of 11,149 cars across the Civic sedan and hatch ranges every year since 2017, but it’s expecting to shift 900 petrol hatches per year when the 11th-generation car joins the range full-time.

Sounds like they're trying to murder their dealer network or something, put them all out of business by giving them nothing to sell. Either that or the part shortage is so severe they're willing to basically kill off the Civic for a year while they solve it and just focus on their higher end vehicles instead, or they're really serious about killing off petrol only cars.

Shame it's not much of a car, a MY22 Civic will be an absolute rarity in years to come, I'd almost buy it as an investment if it wasn't so ridiculously overpriced.

    • +1

You seem to have missed the news that Honda dealers don't sell Hondas any longer. Honda Australia sells the cars. The remaining dealers just deliver and service them.

      • -1

What happem if they dont sell? New cars need to be register within 3 months from compliance date.

Curious what the demo/dealer used price will be.

        • +1

New cars need to be register within 3 months from compliance date.

          Wtf? No they don't

          • @spackbace: Isnt it? Thought that is the case and they register them as demos or company car.

            My bad.

    /spits drink Seriously? WTF

Then again. I was looking at "STI EJ25 Final Edition" and Honda looks like a bargain
    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/subaru/wrx/sti-ej25-final-e…

    • Yeah but at least the Final Edition is actually a special car. Comparing it to an average civic isn't a fair comparison

      • True, just sticker shock is the new normal.

        • +4

          thats actually worth it

this is a 1/15 car that will be worth $250,000 in 5yrs time

come back and tell me how much a 22b is worth

    • +1

Only 75 made and 15 in white. The civic is mass produced dime a dozen econobox.

  • +6

Subaru lost their way years ago. Nothing innovative coming from that direction.

    • +1

they still have the 4wd symetrical mantra

    • +5

As an current gen STI owner.

      Good

no nannyware, so BS lanekeeping assisting me into oncoming traffic, no stupid gimmicks, no constant warning chimes, no stupid touch screen HVAC controls, no stupid subscription to my seat heater like BMW, no half arsed not autopilot autopilot/self driving crap, NO RGB gamer interior lighting crap. I can disable traction control, oh look has a manual transmission and the engine doesn't sound like ass. AWD system is still ahead of the game. Hydraulic steering one setting, no pages of BS menus on a touch screen to deal with. If I want to do some light shopping (ram raiding) nothing stopping me.

Love my dinosaur, last of the new old school cars. New cars are too expensive and annoying to deal with

      • +5

Just a CVT and an aftermarket JB Hifi headunit.

        • +1

          Ouch, that hurts

    • What innovative to you, just curious?

      • Innovative = Hybrid, new platforms, electric tech, self driving improvements (towards level 5), not flogging the same product for 20 years (AWD was good but it's same same)

Innovative means trying new things, new tech, think environment, show the world how people will move in the 22nd century etc.

        • +1

          https://www.subaru.com/solterra-ev.html

Subaru will take time with new innovation, will deploy it once they've tested it and proven reliable, they're conservative in that way. Hybrid are kinda obsolete now, new tech from a lot of manufactures are half baked pushed to market mess. Self driving is way off, doesn't matter what Elon says. Subaru has Subaru eyesight which works quite well.

eg Mistakes that Subaru wants to avoid. "The Mk8 VW GTI isn't as good as its predecessor."
          https://youtu.be/XGbPHp6QfkQ

          • @Bid Sniper: Sounds good man. Hopefully they drive innovation forward. Innovation is much better when companies take risks rather than flog the same silly ideas every year.

That Solterra looks like any other electric car with zero innovation. Also it is late to market by at least 5 years.

          • +1

@Bid Sniper: 'Mistakes that Subaru wants to avoid'

How about releasing a new WRX that doesn't make you want to throw up when looking at it.

Subaru use to make powerful, quick cars compared to their competitors. They have not increased power and are slower than ever due to weight. Remove the advantage of AWD off the line and on a rolling start are equal or slower than the average hot hatch.

  • With the amount of money printing going on all over the world and the shortages, I wouldn't be surprised if other car manufacturers adjust their price as well.

  • +1

Obviously Honda knows they are not selling well in Australia. Hence they're attempting the fixed price method and single model at a stupid price. So they won't make a loss.
They need to remain profitable and since previous gen was cheaper and didn't even sell well, why not try one model and hope a niche market customer would pay $48K for it.

Although they should've brought over the Si model and try sell it for $50K. But they didn't and lets see how well this VTI LX sells.

Merged from 2022 Honda Civic $47,200 Driveaway. Thoughts?

    Hi all,

If anyone has been scrolling their automotive feeds in the last day or so, I'm sure you've read the news that Honda Australia has announced their 2022 Civic small car for Australia.

In one spec only, it is priced at just wait, $47,200!!! (driveaway) No you are not reading this wrong.

Honda Australia defends the pricing with boss Stephen Collins stating to media :"We’re really repositioning Civic in Australia…. It won’t be a huge volume vehicle for us. We’re anticipating, in the next 12 months, we’ll do about 900 units – it’s a little unclear given the supply issues in the second half of next year."

"So given, that it’s going to be more premium and more positioned at that top area of the hatch market, it will be lower volume for us but still a critically important model.”

If anyone is already ahead of calculations on this one, Honda is currently operating across 90 dealerships, meaning 75 dealerships may sell one Civic per month. One!!!

The 2020 Honda Civic 1.5 VTi-LX hatch was priced at $34,090 before getting culled earlier this year, representing a now increase of $13,110 or the 2022 model.

To make matters worse, the car is still running a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol with 131kW and 240Nm with a drony CVT and no manual transmission availability. Specwise, this model doesn't feature a standard sunroof, cooled ventilated front seats, heating steering wheel or rear air vents, HUD and driver seat memory/lumbar support.

Overall, maybe I'm being overly harsh but honestly Honda is an absolute trainwreck right now. This car could sell in decent numbers at $40,000, but at $47,200. They really have lost the plot.

I'd love your thoughts on this guys?

    • +4

the new Civic is a hit in the US and the EU and China.

That's the only markets they care about. In the US it has a plain 2.0 n/a four w/ 6 spd man. or that turbo 1.5 (bleh).

They dont care about the Aust market enough to market it competitively, further they cant get allocation.

Besides the drivetrain the car is a probably a market leader… and the Americans like the turbo 1.5 auto.

I walk past the Homebush Asia market and they still have the ads for the old $26,500 civic sedan and $29,900 civic hatch. This is a nice looking car just like the new one but Honda here are in a bind. They have to sell something so they're catering for the Honda vtec crack heads (you know who you are).

IMO for $47k any compact c segment hatch HAS to be a performance model, prefereably 4wd.

Anything less is a joke… or German.

      • +1

Have you seen the new civic sedan SI? Its amazing! Features is wow. That's probably why its doing so well (Plus the pricing isn't actually ridiculous) You know Australian version doesn't even have half the features in the lower trims in US / Canada. Its so funny how they are doing this. Killing their own brand.

        • We don't get the Si model in Australia and never will.

    • +1

It won’t be a huge volume vehicle for us

      He's not wrong

Honda was a fantastic brand in the late 90s… but they have made some terrible decisions since then…

  • +6

Car is clearly not 50 grand material and many better options are available. Cynically this may be designed to tank sales on purpose to justify an escape from Australia to the dealers. It has been nice knowing Honda but doubt they'll survive beyond next year with this strategy.

    • I agree. And their 4wd's aren't competitive either with the new Kia 4wd's and Toyota's 4wd.

  • +4

Insane. No wonder the slanted H is taking away sales from Honda.

  • +3

Maybe Honda want to go upmarket because they will not be able to compete with Chinese car in the lower end. Unfortunately the only thing the can move upmarket is the price.😅

Goodbye Honda, you milked the VTEC brand as long as you could.

  • this is absurd…

  • +11

Japanese manufacturers went from being the affordable and reliable option to being the overpriced mainstream option. They've become lazy and relied on their customers loyalty and brand name to keep them going.

Toyota used to offer cheap and reliable 4wds and Pickups. Now they can only be afforded by large fleet companies and tradies who can write them off on taxes.
Mitsubishi used to own the younger age market share, now they only sell softroaders.
Once Subaru stopped their rallying, they relied on their history to sell new cars. But people have forgotten why AWD is worth the extra money.
Honda has had a reputation for having cars that last a lifetime, but that has wained in recent times with customers not keeping cars for long periods and other manufacturers offering longer warranties and more affordable services.

Now the Korean manufacturers are stepping in with cheaper, better designed and more exciting models. And have the reliability and quality trust behind them as well.

China is also not far behind. Once people get over stigma of buying one, they will be the next one's on top if Korea gets lazy like the Western, then the Japanese markets did.

    • Every manufacturer has had to increase safety to meet modern safety regs. Adding in more features like that comes at a cost. Not to mention the shitty aud/yen over the last year or 2.

But there was an article recently about car affordability and its actually not that bad to previous decades.

  • +2

Must of Hired some of the Nissan Australia bosses that gutted that brand, to decide to turn Honda into a SUV + 1 car brand

Also 131Kw Turbo engine, stock non turbos 2.0 can do that 20 years ago

    • +1

      NA 1.8 Hondas had 140kW in 1996.

    • Honda Aus still has the Accord which sold 69 units this year…

  • +1

Oh god. If this is nearly 50k. How much will they price the new Z that I put a deposit down for. I was hoping for 60-65k starting price.

    • +1

I fear you will be disappointed

  • Not defending Honda but these new Civics are made in Japan again instead of Taiwan.

And with the prices of second hand cars lately, new car prices were bound to jump on the bandwagon.

    • Really? Finally, Jap made Civic? Nice… but still 7k overpriced.

Wouldnt mind a 30k new Jazz though.

    • +6

      *Thailand

      • You are right! It was late, I was tired and have Taiwan on my mind for completely different reasons..

    • They were previously made in Thailand. All the Hondas I've owned have been made there, so I don't know if the Japan-made ones are better or what.

  • +1

I already posted the answer on another thread a while back…

    • Well this is true

    • +2

Ugh, I cannot stand watching him, even if hes not wrong.

  • +1

Honda should've brought out a more comfort focused and less boy racer version of the Civic Type R with the 2.0T vtec engine to compete with Golf GTI. They would've sold plenty of those.

  • I remember when the Civic hatch was advertised at $19,990 drive away in the late 90s

    • 20K in 1995 is ~36k today. Not a HUGE difference really

  • +1

Honda has lost touch with the market.

Personally, I love the fixed price sales model with cars. Buying a Tesla was a breath of fresh air compared the traditional process of going into the yard, haggling with an obnoxious carsalesperson etc etc. I like knowing that everybody who buys the same car as me is paying the same price.

However, the company still needs a competitive product.

    This pricing is whack.

    • Or, get good at haggling. Why hate on people who are better than a particular skill than you are?
Jealousy is a bad trait to have.

      • +1

No jealousy, just a support for transparency.

Why bother going through the haggling process when I don't need to. Fixed price all the way.

      • +1

Yeah naah mate. Having to haggle is instantly off-putting in 2021.

Why hate on people who are better than a particular skill than you are?
malich didn't though. Unless you're misreading the jab on obnoxious car salesman (which is still fair enough).

I absolutely love the fixed price sales model and am glad this will mean haggling will not be a thing one needs to endure when buying a car.

  • +2

    I purchased a 2020 5 seater CR-V last year for 40K with a few extras… 47 for a civic is mental..
It's a shame because they do make nice cars, they definitely wont last

  • +2

I learned about this from a random YouTube video a while back by "auto expert John codagan". Sad to see but I feel no sympathy for a company that forgets its roots.

    https://youtu.be/4v32nnt19nI

  • +2

Is their engine still with crappy CVT? 47k lol I'd much rather buy Mazda 6

  • All the reviews seem to love the car and it does seem like a great car. Heck, even I would think about buying this car but not at this absurd pricing. For this pricing you could buy a nicely specced Corolla hybrid. Doesnt seem like much competition.

Also if Honda dealers are making jack all margin on them now being just an agent they aren't going to be pushing them very hard.

  • +1

Thought Honda was exiting the Australian market?

    • +1

Maybe not by choice but based on the new prices and sales model we should expect Honda to exiting in the next couple years

    • Their car supply parts arm exited the Aus market silently

    • This is what I've heard also.

  • +2

IMO Honda is surely going to be gone in 2023. The brand is selling less and less and their cars are mostly boring and expensive.

A shame as they have a good loyal customer base with repeat business, but when a little car is so expensive. It’s hard not to go a European car or even the Chinese brands. How many MG are on the road and no complaints.

  • +2

Can get a used fully optioned Lexus for much less than that

  • I waited months for this, them dear the price yesterday and I was halfway between gutted and disgusted. Hard no fnway from me. For that price I'd rather buy a SUV.

  • +1

Ozpost now dropped their bike purchases. So RIP Honda, it is a tough game. My 1991 Honda generator still starts on the first pull.
Good cars always had it tough, but 10k service intervall? Dealers are now sham contractors, followed by Merc.
Looked at both brands and salesperson admitted if they can't sell a lucrative finance package they can't cover their costs. Too bad for them, can wait for a model Y.
Maybe we should have a vote on what brand will die first and which next with dying orders?
Smiling Mary at GM has shown the world how to bring down a giant. There will be more casualities!

  • +4

Honda has been a dying brand in Australia for well over a decade. Dealerships are shutting down, sales have collapsed. A bog standard Civic for $47k is a great sign of the demise. Honda used to have innovative and attractive cars, and then Mazda ate their lunch.

$47k is just silly, but there's a silver lining: As manufacturers keep pumping up the price of ICE cars, EVs continue to become cheaper. Eventually the difference will be so small that we'll see mass EV adoption.

  • +1

cant wait for Part 2: the integra!

  • Inflation through the roof?

  • Holding to my 2017 Civic RS for dear life. Bought it brand new for $32.5K 4 years ago. Most complete car that I have driven and before that I also drove a brand new 2015 Mazda 3 which was also great but Vtec + turbo win me over.

    • You know that the 2017 RS doesn't really have "Vtec" its more i-vtec - which isn't really the same thing.

  • +3

I know that Honda's been hit hard by the shortage of chips and also sale figures plummeting

Honda has been brain-dead since long before the pandemic or shortage of chips or such. The "target market" for this kind of car at the price they're asking simply does not exist. I don't expect them to survive down here for too long.

  • Resale value on ICE will tank sooner and harder than people expect. No I don’t drive an EV, I am too old and emotionally attached ICE.

    • Maybe, maybe not. Resale drops like a stone on electric vehicles. It's been like this for a long time now.

      • eventually there will be enough second hand electrics floating around to make them more attractive, but its a slow process.

  • Also Honda for some reason decided to discontinue selling the Jazz in Aus and no plans to bring the fully electric Jazz over either.

    • Now that is a great car! Still miss mine

  • +1

I had a couple of friends who are more into the car market tell me that Honda is dying down, they are nowhere near as popular or as reliable as they once were. Is that true? I used to always have the image Honda was a bit pricier than toyota but they both were the most reliable cars around.

    • +1

Still realiable i dont know who told you that - Honda is up there when it comes to reliability

They just havent innovated anything in over a decade. Nor have they kept up with the competition, Kia, Hyundai, Mazada, and Toyota have all surpassed them by a mile

  • +1

    That really is expensive…
I bought my Honda Civic 2015 (MY15) New* (just got moved for Display), late November 2015.
Paid $20,500 Cash, when it woulda been 27k if my Dad didn't know the account manager for the dealership.

  • +2

Curious, having not been close to the pricing market for a while, what is the best value at the moment for a new car if you actually DID want to spend $47k (no demo, or used but brand new).
Looks like you could get a Hyundai Tucson Elite/Kia Sportage GT Line, Hyundai 4x4 Santa Fe/Kia Sorrento (base model), Kia Niro Phev, Mazda CX8/9 Sport, Mid/High Spec new model Mits Outlander, Skoda Karoq or Octavia, Top spec Subaru Forester, Mid/High spec Hybrid Rav4, and a couple of models in teh Gold/Passat/Tiguan range

    Honda have lost the plot

Even a base model Tesla model 3 is only $62k in vic after the gov subsidy

    • CX9 Sport (2.5T) is faster than the 2022 Civic lol

  • +1

Seems like a "we can't be bothered but we'll do it for the right price" kind of price - maybe there's a supply issue? The CR-V VTi is $38k which is still a sizable bump from the $32k I paid for mine new in 2019.

  • Makes the EVs feel like bargain of the century.
That is if you can get your hands on one.
