Cancelling on a website isnt enough? (my eBay+ cancelled over a year ago - but PayPal "automatic payments" keeps going through)

Hey guys,

Quick story

  • Woke up to a 48.99 ebay charge, despite cancelling ebay plus over a year ago
  • Spoke to ebay, they verified I had no ebay plus on my account, said I hadn't made an ebay plus purchase, and so directed me to contact paypal to get more info about the payment
  • Paypal couldn't do anything about it apparently, and said I needed to get the refund done through Ebay as it was their payment
  • Eventually Ebay tracked the payment and acknowledged it was a mistake and said they'd refund it.
  • Got the 48.99 refund, all is good

  • HOWEVER, 4 days later I get another 48.99 charge.

  • This is where I started researching about paypal "automatic payments" and looked into managed subscriptions where behold I see "ebay" under the list. I instantly remove it.

!!

I'm going to be honest - I never knew this was even a thing, that a subscription not tied to any internal ebay systems, but my external payment service, existed. And so it's the reason I make this thread - As I am now scared that with other "subscription" type payments on paypal, that if I cancel online on the companies website/my account, that an external paypal payment might keep going through.

Was there some sort of fine print I missed on the paypal checkout about automatic payments ?

I had no idea paypal did this! Has anyone else been bamboozled by this ?

Yeah this has been a scam forever. It pays to go into that section in PayPal every 6 months and clean it out.

    • Or always check PayPal authorised payments every time you cancel anything

  • Thanks Bigred! planning on cancelling, will check it out.

  • Yeah I was suprised a couple years back to find a heap of providers who could direct debit to my paypal in a obscure section of my account. I cleaned all that out.

Everyone checking their Paypal managed subscriptions now

    • Well I certainly just did, will be more often now!

Omg, so did I and was shocked! Probably a dozen random merchants from random purchases over the years, none of which required a sub, all solo purchases.

      Inactived all… Phew.

    • Thanks for the reminder. It's been too long since my last clean-up!

It is very complicated finding the exact spot on PayPal where this is.

It took me at least 4 clicks and that's with guessing where automatic payments are.

So I've cancelled the automatic payment to eBay plus but there are still a number of other automatic eBay payments linked to my PayPal account that say $0.00?? I think these may be eBay purchases I've made via PayPal? It really is a maze.

  • Thanks OP, just cleared out a heap!

  • You get a prompt and click an agreement to add someone to PayPal managed subscriptions - so I find it hard to believe that some don't know this exists within their account.

  • Bought one of their card readers hoping to accept card payments. But American firms never care about privacy. Just because I had a dispute with Amex about a subscription I never asked for, Paypal put me on the blacklist and now I have a bricked reader.
Amex is still keen to do business with me but Paypal can have both my middle fingers!

  • Exact reason why never signup to these subscriptions via Paypal, Always try to use disposable cards wherever possible

    • What service do you use for disposable cards? I'm interested in doing that

There are a number of services Like
        Revolut - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/664034
        Zip pay
        Wise

Personally would say either of these 3 (I've used all) all are great. Zip pay is BNPL service (does do Credit Checks). Revolut and Wise Don't do Credit Check.

If i was you would go with revolut deal and get an extra $60 signup bonus too (not easy to tell the person referring you has $60 offer for just him or for him and you too, Ask them to send you a screenshot of their refer a friend page)

Quite a lot of merchants creates a new subscription for every transaction as well. So you end up with 10+ KFC subscriptions in PayPal

  • thank you. i cleared out a whole lot of them too.

  • TBH each time i tried to cancel my ebay Plus membership on the ebay website it just has an error and says try again later, so yeah totally legit that…

edit: wtf that auto payment section for me has google, facebook, bws, liquorland, crust pizza, ebay, and half a dozen others that just added themselves??

When you pay by paypal, sometimes it adds to your automatic payment list for easier checkout. With my list, I have over 100+ collected over the years but 99% of them are once off payments.

You got to be ontop of the ones that are reoccurring by looking at the most recent billed transaction

  • I got done by FaceBook ads, facebook couldn't even find the account it was billing to. After 2 months of battling with facebook and paypal, PayPal refunded me the money as they took over $200 by the time I cancelled the automatic payments through paypal.

    A joke really……
