it is even more ugly and stupid-looking than gopro. can you do some deals on gopro or contour????

    • -2

Can we keep the comments on the product relevant to the offer? We're giving ozb members the first opportunity to discuss and buy a brand new product to Australia at a discounted rate. Please stick to the guidelines of deals as this is off topic

got 2 negs, one is from the junglejumble apparently. how about the other neg? from the one that vote up the deal?!

  • hmmmmm, Wingman vs GoPro2 vs Contour?

      Found a review http://www.webbikeworld.com/r3/delkin-wingman-hd/review.htm

The inability to operate the camera while the camera is inside the housing is a deal breaker for me. I want to use it on a kayak and taking the camera out of the housing is NOT an option. The only things you can operate whilst the camera is in the housing is the record button, you can't even turn it on or off!

  • -1

The built in LCD and camera has standby modes to protect the battery life during downtime and also allows instant reactivation of video or picture capture with the press of the record/still button which makes this feature not so important anyways given the long 2.5hr record time.

Review quote "Fortunately, the video quality of the Wingman HD is pretty good. In fact, in a couple of respects, it could be called class-leading."

Given this is the most important part to any video cam + ability the view and review video/pictures via the LCD screen + 2.5 hr recording time + the great added accessories such as 12v in car charger which allows to to only to charge but also record as much video as the SD card allows + excellent pricing leads me to believe this will be a very popular product

Thanks for the review heads up!

    • I just read that review and compared it to the 1080p video from a GoPro. I'm sorry but who ever called that class leading should promptly visit an optometrist.

      • That sentence of the review is just fluff. If something is only "class-leading" "in a couple of respects" then overall it's not class-leading.

        • -4

The review covers all aspects of the cameras positives and negatives. Given the reviewer has industry knowledge and reviewed 16 cameras in this field I would suggest your comment is fluff

        • Cheers for the insult, rep. I was just pointing out how that sentence was pretty much oxymoronic and might as well be ignored. I would also like to point out how it says "could be called class-leading". Given that it "could be called" something, it follows that it also "could be called" something entirely different, i.e. NOT class-leading. The reviewer expressly describes the video quality as "pretty good" for God's sake! The whole sentence is contradictory, redundant and only aids in confusing potential buyers. Thanks for being so professional about it though, junglejumble.

Personally, I think having to open the case to turn it on and off is a pretty big oversight. It's a shame, because otherwise this is a very tempting purchase!

    • I'm sure the reviewer that put so much effort into an objective review would think otherwise. I merely quoted a passage from a review link submittted by another member here on ozb. It makes sense, no?

  • As mentioned above the Wingman HD doesn't come with a slide on/off switch on the underwater housing.

You can configure the camera so it enters into a STAND BY mode after a certain amount of time. Thus you can still turn the camera on or off by pressing the record/still button underwater,up a tree ,skiing etc. The camera emits a beep sound to tell you it is on. If you shoot a video, it will beep once again. If you stop recording, it will beep twice.

No real issues here as the recording time is around 2.5hrs. In opposition to the hard off switch, standby gives you quicker start up recording times for those hit and miss situations.

I think most are missing the point here, the Wingman HD camera includes LCD screen which lends itself to more applications than just helmet/bar camera. Aerial, Water, Alpine, Street Action sports etc would benefit from a view/review LCD screen. That's just my opinion and haters will hate

    • I think you need to stop insulting all your potential customers dude. The whole point of this site is for people to give their feedback on posted deals. You keep saying it's a moot point that you can't turn it off, do you even know how long the standby time is? The usefulness of the screen totally depends on the application people use it for. In my case, I'd use it on my motorbike, and would find it a useless distraction. I'm not a hater, just a considered consumer.

My apologies, this comment was not aimed at you per say. More so the lack of constructive criticism given by others here when this product has clearly addressed the issue of on/off housing switch with an auto standby feature.

I don't have the exact standby data to publish, as yet, but will update as soon as I get a response from the AU distributor or test myself. The fact remains published data suggests 2.5 hours record time and this figure has been backed up in reviews I have read. Logically standby would have to be significantly higher than this figure, given it's not recording and the LCD is off. On this point the cost of a spare battery is $29 so if your a going to shoot 4-5 hours in a day you'd only need to remove the camera from the housing once.

Potential customers will see the advantages to this system over and above others when it comes to real time video output. 3rd person shooting via LCD allows one to frame the subject accurately, rather than guess and the ability to review and edit the file afterwards is also advantageous.

These comments are just my personal opinion and that's just what ozb is about, rep or not.

        • I just bought a GoPro 1 a few months ago (on special when 2 was released), first i've heard of the Wingman, so can't comment on the quality, but the inclusion of the LCD screen, tripod mount and handelbar mount is pretty good for that price. With the GoPro these are all extras you have to pay addational for.

Also the standard GoPro housing lens apparently isn't the best for underwater (haven't tried), so you have to pay more again to get a flat lens kit to fix that, which this one seems to have.

        • @danyool

how much did you pay for the gopro 1? did you get it from harvey norman alexandria?

i totally agree, gopro is expensive and its extras are extra expensive.

  • Considering that the HD Hero is now discounted this doesn't 'smash it', in addition to the HD2 which can be had for just a few dollars more is in no way given a 'run for its money' by this cam.

No element of this camera can be considered class leading. The go pro can be operated inside its case, has 11MP and better low light noise, wider AoV, battery pack options, wireless remote options yadda yadda yadda.

The fact that the reviewer says "The exposure range seems wider than any of the other cameras", and doesn't understand this is actually referred to as a large dynamic range, has me doubting anything he says in regards to image quality, regardless of how many cameras he has 'reviewed'. Everything he says is off the cuff without any actual data to support any of his opinions about image quality.

Overall I'd give this deal a big yawn. Ok I suppose if you want cheap, but spend a bit more and get something proven and widely functional. To the OP, some more respect for people posting their opinions would go along way…

"The go pro can be operated inside its case" as can the WingmanHD it just doesn't have an on/off switch on the housing.

"and doesn't understand this is actually referred to as a large dynamic range" Exposure and dynamic range are intrinsically linked In photography, exposure range may refer to any of several types of dynamic range including the Light sensitivity range of digital camera sensors. Also the common reference is higher dynamic range rather than larger.

    • If it's off and I have to take it out to turn it on, or vice-versea, then I don't consider you being able to operate it whilst in the case. As would anyone who intends to use this on or in the water, I imagine.

DR is DR, sensitivity is sensitvity. I'm not aware of this combination of them you refer to? Any way if you did insist on saying 'exposure range', that would normally allude to a range of varying exposures in photography, ie. -3eV, 0eV, +2eV for the use of HDR etc. And with DR, larger/higher, tamato/tomato, they're the same.
