Is Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser Worth The Price ?

Hi OzBargainers, I am wanting to buy a new car and was considering buying the Toyota RAV 4 Cruiser.

However keeping in mind the wait time (8-10 months) and with the new model launching in February 2022, is it worth preordering the RAV4 Cruiser. Approx. price would be around $50000+/- . Or one should wait for some other hybrid cars to appear in the market as this will provide more options with the price range. I was also considering getting a demo clearance RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser, but keeping in mind the demand and supply I don’t think Demo cars would be available.

Just wanting to understand if it is worth to buy the car around $50,000 or I should wait and once the cars are back to normal level stock the price will reduce?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a RAV4 GXL, for me, the Cruiser variant wasn't worth the extra cost, but the car itself is great.
I also waited less than a month for my car, you can contact dealers for cancelled order vehicles, almost every dealer has them, I called every dealer in Sydney and eventually found the exact variant and colour I wanted, I just had to drive over an hour to pick it up.

My partner bought a RAV4 Cruiser Hybrid AWD for $49,500 in August 2020, before the supply chain issues became an issue (she waited less than a month for hers). I don't see the prices going down.

It's a good car. I've never been a fan of the previous models - have had both the 2.5 AWD and 2.0 FWD as hire cars previously - but I quite like driving hers.

I also think its decent value. I was cross shopping a Mazda 3 with her. She wanted leather and I wanted to avoid a lethargic engine, so my pick was the G25 GT with Vision Pack. The price difference between that and her RAV was about $7k, which seems about proportionate to the fact that it is an AWD SUV.

I'd buy another one tomorrow without hesitation.

Thanks mate loved the way you explaned..appreciate it

  • $50k but can't carve corners?

If you want a hybrid in a large car - RAV is the way to go

If you just want a larger car with space, the Outback (just get the previous model to save some $$, or the Sport) should be on your list.

  • Toyota will is going through Kodak moment. Where they had the technology but never operationalized at full potential. They will be history soon with battery tech is influenced by Tesla and others. If they come too late to party they would be history. They still have another 5-10 years unless they change there game.

Honestly baffled how people reckon they can do maintenance on $600-1000K mortgage and have $100K of cars used for commuting, all on very firmly median household incomes of ~$160-200K and still think everything is good value.

A recession and one job loss is gonna crush people.

  • Do dealers charge heaps to install accessories like weather shields, bonnet protectors, roof racks etc? Or am I better off buying from their Ebay store with 12% discount codes? Not afraid to DIY.

    • Yes normally dealers would charge more money but then you can’t compare original products to ebay ones. Also when I worked at a dealership few years ago some of the options took good couple hours to install as a trained technician, so depending on what you’re installing not everything is DIY preferable.

Source: I use to install optional extras on brand new cars few years ago :)

      • Thanks for the reply. Should have mentioned that the parts are genuine as some dealers list parts on Ebay. Perks from Ebay plus etc can allow for discount codes

I'm writing this as I am literally the middle of a cherry-gorge induced number two; I must have had 2KG on an empty stomach…

  • May as well buy the fully electric Polestar 2 for a little bit more money. Similar ride height, passenger room and just as practical with the liftback hatch

    • $10k extra, plus the $5k Pilot Pack needed to equal the RAV's safety features, and it's still only 1sec quicker to 100kph…

Wouldn't really say that's "a little bit more money"

      • All it's missing compared to the RAV4 is the adaptive cruise control, blindspot monitor and rear cross traffic alert. Most people wouldn't be cross shopping a fully optioned Polestar 2 with a top model RAV4 anyway, it'd be more budget driven I'd imagine, comparing a base Polestar with a top of the range RAV4. The real benefit here is the electric drivetrain.

      • What do you think of the new Hyundai ioniq 5? It looks super sexy but I think it's a wee bit more expensive lol

        • +1

Imo it looks alright but yeah oof that price

  • It’s worth it.

The hybrid will save you money and is also super powerful

The finish, whilst not as refined as some other offerings, is of a good standard

    Highly recommend

  • Any Toyota dealers in Sydney offering discount on 2022 hybrid cruiser? TIA

Get in touch with the car concierge Dan biady got us a very good deal for me and my friend
      His email address is
      [email protected].
Look his online reviews in Facebook too top bloke.

    • Did you have any luck with this?

      • Been told no haggling on new cars, especially not RAV4, demand is through the roof for next 12 months.

        Plus price rise coming soon.

There also a new model called XSE thats out for $48k

        • Yea that's the thing, they don't care anymore about reducing a little for a sale cos of the demand. Yes, the new XSE and the new edge can be ordered to get them a little sooner.

        • Yes, I think another $700 or so going up in March.

        • I got a $3k discount at the beginning of the month, so whoever said no discounts is lying. (Edit: cash and no trade-in, so nothing funky happening with numbers either)

I also am not expecting to see the car this side of Xmas.

          • @ol mate: Which version did you get and were there any extra accessories included?

Did they note that as you are on a waiting list, if Toyota raise price whilst still waiting then they pass extra cost on to you?

            • @bargrin: Got a hybrid Cruiser AWD with a few genuine accessories (boot mat, plastics - no high margin tint, etc.)

The ~$700 price rise that's effective tomorrow is price protected (been told by a few dealers as well as 2 different brokers so I'd say it is somewhat confirmed).

From what I understand, Toyota Australia generally don't pass on any "general increase" to existing orders, but will pass them on where there is an increase in specs, etc. (but they did offset this for the MY22 Rav4 - they gave anyone who ordered pre-July 2021 one year free comprehensive insurance).

              • @ol mate: So how much all up drive away did you get it for?

                • @bargrin: $50k driveaway in Brisbane.

Based on the feedback from other dealers, I'm not sure if the dealer would want to do that again.

For what it's worth, I bought exactly the same car (+ rubber mats) for $47,200 back in Jan 2021 so there's also been an unofficial price rise as well (RRP went up $1,585 + stamp duty, so I paid ~$1,200 more this time around)

  • We have a relative who ordered April last year for a 2wd Hybrid, still waiting. It ain’t coming anytime soon. They are going to cancel.Just a ridiculous state of affairs.

    • They need to look for canceled ordered, they'll be able to get one as soon as March or April 2022 if they are lucky, and woudn't mind settling for the new XSE or the EDGE

      • Our local dealer has an Edge on the front fore court ,has been there for a couple of weeks.Dark grey in colour.Tad over $60,000.

        • That would be a used car for that price…

          • @spackbace: It’s brand new.(fact)They are way overpriced. The thing is,Toyota keeps pushing the price up on this vehicle.Blaming ‘rising’ costs etc….Quite frankly, I would not touch a Toyota, their prices are out of control.

            • @Hackney: Unless there's accessories, over $60k for an edge or edge hybrid is over retail, which isn't allowed…

              Fact.

              • @spackbace: It is just over 60k on the road.It is a Hybrid.I enquired yesterday out of curiosity. It is commonly known as ‘Toyota tax’.

                • @Hackney: No, it's not

Notice the tag on my name? Shows I know about the pricing on cars. Dealers can't advertise a new car for more than retail, and the car's retail is under $60k

So fun story you cooked up there, but it's fiction

                  • @spackbace: Remember when the Yaris ‘rocketed’ up in price?29k for a SX variant? You have got to be kidding. They are not worth that.As I alluded to ‘Toyota tax’.I purchased a brand new Echo in 2001 with A/C for 15k driveway.Sure prices have gone up,but by 15k?As a result sales have tanked, roughly 250 units in Jan 22.Even Corolla is feeling the pinch. Then they want 35k + for a Hybrid Yaris? Again,no way.Toyota started the ball rolling on massive price hikes, the others have followed.Prices are out of control.

                    • @Hackney: Perceptively 'high' RRP's don't negate the fact that an Edge, be it petrol or hybrid, has an RRP below $60k, no matter how much you want to rant about current market pricing (which is on par with the direct competition btw).

So, despite your PM, no I won't call the dealer. Either it's fitted with accessories, or it's a used car. It could be a 2021 plate, but still be a used car. If the car exists, you should be able to point me to it advertised on the dealer's website.

An Edge Hybrid, in WA (who pay higher stamp duty than NSW, where you supposedly spotted the car), tops out at $59,815 drive away including metallic paint.

                      Fact.

                      • @spackbace: How can it be a ‘used’ car?It only came in a week ago,it is in fact brand new.I did say,it was a ‘tad’ over 60k,(if you had bothered to read my original post)so it is well on the money.(fact, yet again.)

                        • @Hackney:

                          over 60k

in WA (who pay higher stamp duty than NSW

What about this aren't you getting?

                          • @spackbace: Car sales(brand new,available to order) $59,066(NSW) Edge AWD Hybrid.Official Toyota website $58k(metallic paint) NSW.So which is it?

                            • +1

@Hackney: Are either of those amounts over $60k?

                              • @spackbace: 59k is pretty well damn close. It would not take much to tip it over. So,what is your ‘official’ drive away price in NSW?That dealer is pretty well on the money, there is no price gouging going on.

                                • @Hackney:

there is no price gouging going on.

Someone is wrong. Either you got the facts wrong (used car, accessories fitted etc) or their price is wrong.

Either way, a price starting with a 6 is not RRP, which is what we're bound to sell at. Go find it on the dealer's website, should be easy enough.

                                  My point still stands

                                  Understand yet?

                                  • @spackbace: I already have,it seems you cannot give a price either.Typical from a car salesman.

                                    • @Hackney: I'm in a different state, different stamp duty. I gave you my price, said NSW will be cheaper

This is like talking to a brick wall.

                                      • @spackbace: Visa versa.

                                        • @Hackney: *vice versa

And I thought that @spack pointed it out with relative ease to understand. Your comments on the other hand, wtf are you talking about. It's either over $60, or it isnt?

                                          And this comment;

It only came in a week ago

                                          doesn't work with this comment;

has been there for a couple of weeks

Which is it? a week, or a couple of weeks? All starting to sound like bullshit to me.

Is Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser Worth The Price ?

    Not really.

  • +1

For all those waiting, looks like you might get an even newer updated version due Oct 22.

However, the price likely to go up on this extra feature model and they would charge you the extra I would think

    https://www.drive.com.au/news/2023-toyota-rav4-update-due-in…

    • Excited for this, finally a modern infotaintment screen and large instrument cluster. Hope they add Heads up display as well.

  • More delays for all Toyota’s manufactured in Japan. There has been a cyber attack on one of their components suppliers. They are suspending production.

    • That's ok. More time to have that money sit in an offset reducing interest payments :s

  • We choose AWD before a Cruiser option (snow trip). So last three RAV's have been GXL. Quite happy with mid-spec, mid-price choice and update when out of warranty.

  • Any recommendations for good quality seat covers for RAV4 GXL hybrid? TIA

    • +1

If you like Sheep skin, I highly recommend ‘The Everyday store’, they have a EBay store,or go on to their website.I have purchased quite a few sets over the years off them. You can also phone them for advice on what to get.

  • I am getting a demo 2023 Toyota RAV4 Cruiser Demo car in syd for $55K + taxes. Should I go for it? TIA

    • 2WD? Seems like good deal if you dont have to wait. Ordered my AWD cruiser in Nov 2021. Still don't have it haha. Ordered Model Y last month. Reckon I'll get the Tesla first. Sick of Toyota and their bad service. Will sell the RAV if it ever arrives

      • Yes 2WD. Thanks

    • Is it the current model with new infotainment? If so that's good, other dealers would be flogging that at $70k+

      • Yes the current model just 2months old rego.
        Thanks

        • Well that's a good price. MRP is already $54k and you have to wait 2 years.
