Any News of a Christmas Ham Discount?

IIRC, around this time last year Coles and Woolworths had a limited time (only lasted a few days) $10 discount off the marked price of half and whole legs of smoked ham. So for say a 4 to 5kg half leg, this worked out to drop the price from ~$8/kg down to $5.50-$6/kg.

Any supermarket staff or others heard if the supermarkets will be running this promotion again this year?

Coles is currently running $10 off half leg ham (Beechwood brand) at least it was when I bought one on Monday.

    • $10 off the marked price? Beechwood is $8/kg for full legs, $8.50/kg for half legs at the moment (just checked - front page of this week's catalogue).

I didn't see that $10 special advertised anywhere.

Edit: Just rang the local Coles. It was a special that ended last Tuesday. Looks like I missed it.

Stock runs out quicker than the special.
Suggest you keep an eye out for the Coles and Woolies catalogue previews very Monday.

I agree. Not a huge fan of ham. Prawn, snags, burgers way better.

prawns wrapped in ham in a burger bun..

my wife and kids all dislike ham. So either I eat 2-5kg on my own or I go without. I could get one of those little boneless ham loaf things, but they never taste very good.

I used to do a bigger ham for my husband and I, but we never ate it all, and would end up freezing it for quiches, etc. So we started buying good quality sliced ham from Costco (and in a pinch one year we got some from Coles deli) and it was really nice! We still had ham for Christmas, but didn't have any waste afterwards. And we always buy a bit extra so we can still have our Boxing Day ham and cheese toasties. ;)

        • You can get 1/4 leg and smaller hams from the meat section of Coles. But you pay more per kg. The small ones are boneless and have very little wastage.

Still cheaper than the deli sliced ham price and keeps longer.

I've never liked the tinned ones.

I usually get a 1/2 leg ham for Christmas and it lasts a couple of weeks of cold cuts and sandwiches. Wrapped in a wet tea towel with salt and vinegar in the fridge.

          • @Chris McMahon: We used to buy the smaller hams, but as dtc mentioned above, We don't find that they're as nice as the bigger ones. That's why we get the slices - they taste like the bigger hams, but without needing to eat ham for weeks afterwards. When there are only two of you trying to use it all up, ham gets very boring, very quickly!

@ChocStrawberries: Selecting the best ham is an art. You want the "fattest" ham, not necessarily the largest. Also if you're getting a 1/2 leg, try and get the upper potion as the muscle-to-bone ratio is better.

Picnic hams (the front legs, as only the rear legs can be called "leg ham") are also worth a look if you can find a really thick muscled one.

              Have you tried ham steaks?

A ~1cm think slice of pan fried ham with a slice of cooked of pineapple on top and a few chips, or a salad. When you just start the ham, it's pretty easy to get large steaks out of it. It also uses the ham pretty quickly.

Home made Pea & Ham soup, Special fried rice (I generally use the more grizzly bits near the bone for these two).

You don't have to eat meat! I made enough gazpacho for all! It's tomato soup - served ICE COLD!

        Go Back To Russia!

      • Ahhh, this should really have gotten more love.

    • Weekends for breakfast I have ham and cheese on toast and then it's a ham and pinapple pizza and then …finally cut up and frozen for the kids lunches.

At chrissy there is always way way too much ham…., unless you freeze it for lunches and pizza and weekend breakfast and then the amount is okay.

I prefer chicken, prawns and the last few years the cheap WA small lobsters for a treat. I prefer mud crabs or blue swimmer crabs than lobsters.

Coles sent me a targeted 3000 ($15) points on a beechwood ham

That $10 promo was great last year. We bought 4 with February/March best before dates

Ham at these prices are pumped full of brine and liquid smoke. Do yourself a favour and try a proper smoked ham from a butcher.

      Was waiting for this comment.

So many people are in a race to the bottom for price but they forget that the way that price is offered isn't due to reduced margin on profit, it's on reduced quality of the product you're eating!

Amazing what you can do with a cheap ham when you spice and bake it

    • Agree! We get ours from a local butcher. It's not cheap ($19/kg), but I think it's important to be more conscious of not just what we put into our bodies, but the amount of meat we consume in general. I'd rather go without ham than have some cheap nastiness.

    • Also support local businesses. These supermarket giant's don't need more of your money.

    • My local butcher didn't have a ham leg under $100. Hell even his sausages were $20/kg. Someone must be paying these prices, but it isn't me.

  • Many many many years ago (think early 80's) I worked for a smallgoods company that did a roaring trade in smoked Christmas hams. Smoking them killed all of the maggots that had bred within the hams during the brining / curing process. I haven't been able to bring myself to consider a Christmas ham since those days.

  • Coles has $5 off coles brand ham this weekend https://shop.coles.com.au/a/fairfield/everything/browse/meat…

Thanks. I ended up geting $5 off a $21 picnic ham. Not too bad, worked out to ~$6/kg.

      • It’s a good way to do it!
