4x4 Like Isuzu MU-X, Ford Everest, Mitsubish Pajero Sport

Please recommend a 4x4 for me - I have not owned one before. I will tow an offroad camper (1500kg). If you know of any bargains of tips that would also be appreciated.

No bargains in the automotive industry. Period.

Try a forum dedicated to 4x4 owners. They will have all the answers you seek.

    Plenty on the Internet.

  • 1500kg is small for one of those. I suggest you actually go and look at cars, drive them, and see what suits your needs/wants/budget

  • The 3.0L diesel in the M-UX is apparently pretty reliable. If it were me I'd go Isuzu - Mitsubishi- ford.
Or you could get a Toyota Prado.

  • Its amazing how the definition of a 4wd has changed over time….

    • In what way?

      • Most are marshmallows now…

To be fair most of the people who drive them these days are just as soft as a marshmallow…

How are those listed, not 4wds?

      • IFS? Back in the day when it was introduced I remember all the rich 4x4 owners I knew declaring they’d never buy a “soft” 4x4 with IFS. These days those same people refuse to buy a 4x4 that doesn’t have every entertainment option available whilst I still have my old live axle vehicle that doesn’t even have factory power steering.

        • Nothing wrong with ifs, some are independent all round. Have a look at the independent suspension rock bouncer on YouTube, works way better than the live axle ones. What sort of suspension does a military humvee have?

  • Pajero, pajero sport, cruiser, patrol and everest- all good options depending on your budget. All of these would tow the 1500 camper very easily and tackle off road terrain
    well .

One thing to consider is the ease and access to any repairs incase something gets damaged or broken in the bush. Pajero, cruisers and rangers seem to be the most popular choice amongst serious caravanners.

We considered mux a few months ago but after a test drive we struck it off our list. I've heard the old model used to be good but the new one isn't worth the money they're asking. Anyways I'd recommend the pajero sport. Cheers!

  • Depends on what you're going to do with it.

We have a Pajero Sport and an Austrack Sav X, fully loaded she's a bit of 2t. We just finished a month up cape york without any issues.
