Not Happy with PlayStation 5 Console Design Aesthetics

Just got my console today after months of putting it off. Found it for a good price and I was always going to get one after getting almost a decade of use out of my Ps4.

No complaints about the system and service itself yet. Seems nicely refined and polished, load times are quick, all the usual stuff. But my God, why was I not warned about the horrid design of this thing? It's not just a shock to look at, the poor design extends to it's accessibility and makes it extremely awkward to lay flat on a surface. They seemingly got around this by throwing in a cheap plastic base connector that helps the console sit straight. It's not an issue per se, but for a modern home console that was hyped up so much, it just breaks the immersion.

This isn't even to mention the inflated form factor. This thing is a brickhouse that you could probably use for self defense. It looks like I'm running a remote cloud service from the damn thing. It's HUGE.

I'm usually not one to care about things like this but it's just that bad.

      Not sure how you don't see the irony in that. Maybe the particular reason I don't know what it looks like is because I'm already outside all the time instead of staying home playing playstation?

        Surely you would have seen a picture around SOMEWHERE

        Was quite well aware of most mainstream complaints people had.

          I shouldn't have to spend more money because the manufacturer cut corners in their design department. It's the principle. A brand new flagship console from a major corporation should come with some ergonomic and aesthetic consideration.

          If you drop the console because it's too bulky or it falls off the table because it can't even sit flush, you're basically screwed, faceplate be damned.

            Anyhow, its not like you purchased this sight unseen, you had endless chances to 'view' what you had been buying in the million online reviews and billion photos and million youtube videos on it.

    It not only looks terrible, but the build quality is terrible. The plastics are cheap and nasty. Real aesthetic failure. Xbox SX has way better build quality, design and materials.

    They would have been better off designing it (lets agree on same size) at least boxy to lie flat or sit up - little be like the PS4.

      I believe the negativity is from OP buying the thing without ever seeing it beforehand.

      He knew that he wanted to buy one, he bought one, he didn't know what the thing he wanted looked like until he got home and finally opened his eyes to view the box or his assistant was sent out to buy and set it up for him.

      I've got no problem with the OP either, it's truly amazing he bought the PS5 without ever seeing it.

      I'd usually say "almost certainly" but with the silicon shortage I'm not sure. Perhaps they will rush to a slim design to save on parts? Or perhaps they'll cling onto the current design so that it's easier to maintain parts and supply with a proven design?

    Granted the plastic base is not great but does it matter what it looks like? Its not a metal rectangle box like every other piece of AV equipment so thats cool.

        In contrast I find the design is sleek and modern and far easier to use than previous consoles.
        I probably fall within the designers demograph, while there will be a minority of gamers who do not.

    The website has pictures and videos, youtube has real reviews on aesthetics and build and material….

    I mean….. you really don't have any sympathy grounds because a simple youtube search would have 'warned' you about the design.

    Other people like it, other people don't. It's design, design is subjective.

    If you don't like it, then hide it in a drawer when you play.

    I'm mainly an Xbox gamer, but I have a PS4 slim in white. PS Vita in white too. They're both super sleek. Can't say the same for the PS5. Still looks like a giant router to me. Truly hideous.

    Update to clarify - aside from the off putting design, I wholeheartedly love the console as expected. The UI is neat, it runs very smoothly, and loading/starting games is crazy fast (feels like PC level loading times tbh)

    The design has no flat surfaces so it's hostile for stacking stuff ontop so the vents won't be blocked. Same way you can't stack stuff on your car dash.

      I feel like this is a lesson in why online dating can be such a hit or miss. Seeing something in person is a lot different to a photo. The images I saw of the ps5 didn't really show every angle, nor did it let you see the finishes/joints/grooves around the base. A lot of details are missed in marketing photos.

    Love the PS5, even the design. I might be the only one, but got really tired of consoles with little to no character. The PS5 is bigger than the launch PS3, however I'll take a larger console with a bulletproof cooling solution over a square unimaginative 2001:SO monolith any day of the week. After playing the Matrix Tech demo this week…..I appreciate PS5 capabilities even more…

    In the past year I've actually grown to not hate it. I think the XSX and XSS look nicer. But the PS5 isn't as crazy as it was and looks passable. Only issue is the size. Im hoping mine fits in my tv unit once EB call me to get it.

    D-brand have some alternative plates that might help you reduce its footprint, very marginally. Otherwise, that's what it is, maybe wait for the refresh model and trade it in later. I'd rather that it is as big as it is and has the level of performance that it does, than a smaller console with higher temperatures and/or lower performance, but it is quite large.
