Can We Ban Chewing and Bubble Gum?

It's pretty obvious many people cannot be trusted to be responsible with it.

You just have to look at any pathway and you'll see black spots where selfish, simpletons decided it's easier to spit out their gum rather than walk 10 steps to a bin.

We've all had shoes ruined forever by someone's laziness or had our car or home carpets ruined.

It can cost one council $200,000 a year to clean up gum mess. And we have over 500 councils in Australia.

Singapore has had gum banned for decades and they don't complain about not being able to pay for a piece of plastic with flavour that lasts 30 seconds.

Maybe we can have a discussion about whether we need gum in our lives or if we're better off without it?

  • Sure and for the op, why don't we ban computer games.

The hardware to run them requires resources and fossil fuels.

They require electricity to run, usually internet resources too.

They detract from productivity, potentially lead to aggression.

    There are alternatives.
    They are not necessary.

    • A better comparison would be to ban Fortnite

      • Yeah, ban that trash too.

All single use plastics are problematic in the environment, and gum is mainly polyethylene. We banned single use plastic bags, so why not single use gum? At the very least, it should be replaced by a faster biodegrading substance. Those who want to keep chewing gum should maybe consider swapping to Nuud or True or Chewsy etc. There's some Aussie ones called Mast Chew and Honest Gum.

Faster biodegrading means less mess and cleanup needed in the environment.

    Earth to OP.

Singapore is not exactly real democracy (one state party just like WA and look at its premier now) and its people are already accustomed to whateva. Doesn't mean they approve it because I bet you if they lift up that law, see what happens.

  • Graffiti literally everywhere….oh it's Street art which seems to make it sound ok

100% Mentos etc is just as good and you can swallow it.

Cigarettes first then spray cans and gum.

Say no to nanny state. We don't need more nannying than there already is in Australia thanks.

    • -2

Honestly, people who use expressions like “nanny state” show their lack of intelligence. It is, really, pathetic.

      • +1

Yes and ppl with a slave mentality really show how intelligent they are. The problem is the stupidest ppl in the society think they are at the peek of the societies intellectual capability. A clear example can be seen here.

        • -1

At least I know to use “peak” rather than “peek” and I know not to use right wing trope language. I think we can, all, see the clear examples here.

            • @pompompom: “Peek” is, actually, a valid word: so your “autocorrect” excuse is invalid. I’m not at all surprised by your abusive comment. More clear examples being exhibited here.

  • Can we ban posting on forums?

t's pretty obvious many people cannot be trusted to be responsible with it.

You just have to look at any forum on the internet and you'll see black spots where selfish, simpletons decided it's easier to spit out their half-baked opinions rather than keep it tot hemelves..

We've all had days ruined forever by someone's abuse or had our posts or comments ruined.

It can cost one company $200,000 a year(abc.net.au) to clean up a forum. And we have over 500 million forums in Australia.

China has had social media banned for months and they can't complain about not being able to talk smack on the Internet for 30 seconds.

Maybe we can have a discussion about whether we need forums in our lives or if we're better off without it?

    • -2

Yeah but if ABC wasn't so partisan they could save a lot.

      • -1

Not that tired old myth again…
Exactly where is your evidence that the ABC is partisan?

        • -1

Where is your evidence it isn't?

          The same old argument.

Yes, I have not paid a couple million to conduct my own independent study
However if you do not believe that the ABC is left leaning, you are, indeed, a leftie.

          • -1

@mdavant: You're the one postulating it's biased, ergo, it's your responsibility to provide evidence to support your case.

You don't have any, therefore your argument is void.

Calling me leftie doesn't change that, and the ABC isn't left-leaning, as multiple indepdent studies have already found - you just conveniently chose to ignore them. The reality is, rather than me being a leftie, is you are a far-right conservative, the type who's always whinging that the ABC is biased (as are many from the left, which seems to indiciate that the ABC leans neither way).

The board is stacked with former Murdoch media staff.
          It's noticeably pro-LNP.

    • It’s amazing that the media outlet and not the comment poster is held responsible

Nekminnit Bic and Reflex are held responsible for every suicide note that’s written

    Ban NFTs

Arguments can be made to ban almost anything(inanimate objects, food, webistes…etc) just because a small group of people have misused them, doesn't mean we should ban them for everyone else.
Also, outside of classrooms, I've never come into contact with improperly disposed gum for years. Maybe move to a less shi**y neighbourhood, lol?

  • If people caught disposing gum irresponsibly gets caned, would that do the trick?

  • Yes it's called Singapore, as you mention.

Go there? I mean, its a part of life, and it's a very small part of life. If you don't care about the other issues Singapore has listed above (curtailing other freedoms), sounds like a nice place for you, enjoy.

    No.

    Move to Singapore

Wow, there's surprisingly a lot of whataboutism here..

  • -2

Pretty naive to think Australians would follow laws like Singapore.

    Are you new to Australia?

  • If you outlaw chewing gum, only outlaws will chew gum.

  • SG has only banned the sale of gum with exceptions where the gum is used for health reasons.

  • -2

chewing gum create job - without public vandlism, improper disposable of chewed gum, destruction of properties. All those cleaners, businesses, accountants, banking job will be lost. If what u say in simplicied term 200,000x500 =100mil. If u ban chewing gum u are removing a 100mil industry.
