LED Headlights for 2009 Toyota Camry

Hi, I want to upgrade my halogen lights to LED, any suggestions on what to get which requires no modification and plug and play?

Please help!

Thank you.

100% illegal. The reflectors will scatter the light everywhere except where it's needed.

Got a link to your headlight brand/model?

        Coz 99% of them aren't ADR compliant…

The cutoff is way off. It's why people flash their high beam at every idiot with leds in a standard housing, they are being blinded.

I would have thought that some rich would have a car with hid or led headlights as standard?

my fog lights are awesome because i can switch from hyper yellow for bad weather, and white for regular driving.

It's illegal to use fog lights in good weather, please stop

      The Camry has projector headlights.

      LEDs will be fine.

  • Ok so what can I get to white and better light?

Philips Diamond Vision bulbs would do the trick with no mods required and are ADR legal.

      Retrofitted LEDs may not be.

      • Can't find a place to buy them

          • @Hybroid: Really appreciate the help, but if real thru the information it says

"The Philips Diamond Vision bulb does not offer a greater light output but provides a white light for enhanced styling"

Is there one that provides more brightness as well?

            • +3

              @dezi:

Is there one that provides more brightness as well?

There's several that are brighter, from +50% to +150% but keep in mind the brighter it burns, the shorter it's life. Have you checked that your lights are actually aligned correctly? If you're having that much trouble they may not be set correctly or perhaps you have nyctalopia and should see an optometrist. Alternatively if you're doing a lot of country driving you may be better of looking at adding some additional lights.

              • @apsilon: Following on from this OP, as far as halogen lamps go, they get a "whiter" light in part by coating the glass in 'blue' which makes the yellow warm light look bluer/colder, however obviously this then cuts down on the brightness as the blue paint/film whatever they use to tint the light blocks part of the light output.

I looked into this for a very long time and if you can't get LED/HID headlights for whatever reason (legality, cost etc) you're just going to have to choose between colour or brightness.
As @apsilon said, check your alignment, or just buy a "150+" set and see how you go

    • Any of the halogens that claim to give white light are rubbish.

The put a blue film around the bulb so that the colour appears cooler but the overall light output is poor. Life-span is also crap.

    • Nothing, the brightest light you can legally install will be 'yellowy'. The 'whiter' lights just use blue coating which actually reduces some light output.

You can install LED lights and take the (pretty small) risk of being defected, or get a newer car with LED headlights fitted standard.

      • You can install LED lights and take the (pretty small) risk of being defected

There's also the small risk of it being found in the case of an accident. Especially if the other party comments on being blinded etc. Would mean the car isn't road legal and therefore, rego, CTP and insurance would all be void.

        • The insurance claim would only be voided if the accident were caused by the illegal modification. So if the other party did comment on being blinded then maybe, but otherwise it wouldn't be a factor.

Have you done any research at all into automotive light bulbs / options and legalities?

Why should they when they can be lazy and get other people to do the research for them?

Next post - I purchased the diamond vision and they blew out after 6 months. How do I get compensation?

      • Or Next post - I fitted illegal LED headlights and the Highway Patrol pulled me over and booked me. How do I get out of paying the fine?

  • Comes to OZB for automotive advice on illegal headlight leds SMH…Forget LEDs

Walk into SupercheapAuto and compare the test-board to the colour you'll like from the brands available, then find your bulb model in that Brand. You'll likely have to pay them a small fee for them to fit it for you, if the headlight needs removing to get at it.

  • cant wait for you to buy cheapo HID's off ebay, get defected by the coppers and come crying to us

Or it melts the housing and/or the wiring harness…

  • Headlight globes lose output the whiter/bluer you go - so you can't go whiter and brighter.

As previously mentioned, a set of Philips Diamond Vision globes would be the go if you want whiter light.

If you want more light output, Philips make +130 globes and +150 globes that are brighter, but barely any whiter than your usual halogen bulb. I also ran the Osram equivalent (Nightbreakers) in my previous cars and thought they were good bang for buck.

    • Yep +1 for the Nightbreakers. Slightly whiter without compromising on output.

  • Brighter headlights aren’t a great idea. Make it harder for incoming cars to see, makes a crash more likely.

If you drive at night where there’s no one around and need more light use high beam more often and maybe add a light bar or spotlights. You are allowed to use high beam in built up areas.

  • Nothing to do with cheap HID from Ebay.

If you have decent projectors rather than plain reflectors you can use HIDs if they are carefully aligned. I've had HID both hi and low beam in my 4WD since 2009 and never been flashed or pulled over by the police. Yes I've driven behind Highway Patrol cars at night.

    Yes they are still illegal.

    • They are only legal if ADR approved.

Just because you’ve driven near police cars doesn’t mean they are legal. It just means those police weren’t aware of the particular requirements for your vehicle, or they couldn’t be bothered pulling you over because they were busy doing something else.

      • +2

Where did I say they were legal?

If you read my post I said Yes they are still illegal.

If my lights were blinding them don't you think I would have been pulled over following Highway Patrol vehicles as I have many times?

    • +3

      Yes they are still illegal.

At least you finally admitted it.

      • Take that. Nice comeback.

    • Your comprehension is real good hey.

  • if you have a halogen bulb currently installed and you want to upgrade to LED, it won't be road legal.

    2009 Camry… Want more light…

A: have your eyes tested. A lot of people want to solve the symptoms and not the cause.
B: can almost positively say that the lenses are frosted over at that age. Might be worth checking the headlight lenses are clear and not yellowed and frosted. If they are, get them cleaned up and polished.
C: check that they are aligned correctly. They could be pointing anywhere after 12 years of use
D: check the reflective backing inside the headlight isn't fogged, dull or flaking off.
E: don't go "whiter" as they throw less light and last half as long and only seem brighter.
F: don't install LED or HID, as both are illegal in the Camry housing.

    • A lot of people want to solve the symptoms and not the cause.

Instant gratification is strong in modern times. Goes well with ask OzB 1st.

    • This. Plus: use your high beam when there’s no one coming the other way, it’s not just for country highways.

  • Buy some quality LEDs and have them adjusted so that there is a clear cut-off line.

They're technically illegal but you'll probably never be pulled over for them, and you likely won't be blinding anyone since the Camry has projector headlights.

I fitted LEDs to my car and they are significantly better than halogens.

  • Legalities aside, a quality LED bulb in projector housing should produce more light and maintain a clear cutoff line. The difference between an older projector vs the headlights in a new Lexus for example would be the auto headlight levelling feature which means if you fill the Camry with people and luggage, the older headlight will now be tilted back and blinding other road users.
