  • What use case does this thing have?

Soldering practice and a cool way to introduce kids to electronics beyond the Lego clikcy building block kit.

Also understanding electronics if you look at the components in the circuit and how they're used.

It's kinda like looking at a jigsaw and asking "what use case does this thing have?", except in this case there's some learning to be done.

It's like an eye test too. Bought a kit for my daughter that had surface mount components in it. I couldn't read the values, even with a bright light and a magnifying glass. My daughter laughed herself silly as she soldered these tiny things on perfectly and mocked me for being an old git. Surprisingly, I let her live.

You can find kits like these for a few bucks each, and ne555s for a few bucks for a 10 pack.

Dunno if IC Station have great customer support, ship from Australia or something else, but there are much cheaper options for DIY soldering kits and for buying ICs.

      Have you got any suggestions?
I've picked up a T12 soldering iron for Christmas and would love a few little test kits to play around with

Sure, I got all mine from searching ali express for things like "DIY soldering" "DIY welding", "Soldering Kit". Ebay might be easier tho, lemme see if I can find some good searches.

Also, when you're ready for a serious challenge, look at a DIY oscilloscope kit, the one with the red board. It's not for the faint of heart, but it's super cool. It uses SMD components, so make sure you're ready for them before you try one.

Edit: just search Ebay for "DIY Soldering Kit", there are heaps. Random dice rollers, red and blue flashers (good to demonstrate a bistable oscillator circuit), hearts, Christmas trees, things that flash when you clap.

Just beware that anything SMD (surface mount) is not as easy as the through-hole kits.

Here's a few cool ones to search:

        • DIY LED Cube
        • diy soldering christmas
        • DIY soldering random number generator
        • diy soldering clock

Also check out the app "Every circuit" if you're on android — dunno about IOS, but I'd guess it'd be there too.

        • Cheers for that. Appreciate the post.
I'll have a bit of a search on eBay/Ali and put an order in.

            @thorpef1: Have fun.

Don't forget to get some spare solder - having some thinner stuff is handy for these kits. Also a steel kitchen scrubber in a small bowl for cleaning your soldering iron tip. Maybe even a solder sucker or some desoldering ribbon if you intend on making some mistakes :)

I assume you're already all over the yotuube channels, but if not, check out AvE, EEVBlog, Big Clive, Electroboom and Andreas Spiess. (AvE has a few types of videos, from power tool reviews to geeky arduino stuff, so don't bail on him too early).
