Purchasing a new SUV 2022

I am currently trying to purchase a new medium sized SUV for 2022. I was looking a the new Lexus NX that was just announced with deliveries starting in April. I spoke to a dealer over the phone yesterday and was quoted over $95k driveway for one of the top spec models. I have purchased many cars before and always negotiated a discount and I know that luxury brands have a dealer mark up around 30%.

Anyway the dealer said absolutely no discounts atm. I was very disappointed as even with a 10% discount I would've signed a contract and put down a deposit on the spot. Now I'm thinking it might be worth trying another dealer or just buying a different brand that will be more open to negotiating.

What are your thoughts guys. Any feedback on the new car sales situation atm? Any recommendations in negotiating or even buying a different car.

Your advice is much appreciated!

      • Oh ok that makes sense. Do they usually have X amount for each model or combined X amount of cars in whichever model?

  • A lot of manufacturers are pumping out high profit margin models too instead of base models, which pushes used prices even higher.

"I predict that within 10 years, computers will be twice as powerful, ten thousand times larger, and so expensive that only the 5 richest kings of Europe will own them."

All silliness aside, I didn't think growing up in the 70s, that people wouldn't be able to afford to buy houses or cars.

  • I can't even buy an outdoor setting for a decent discount and a 6 month delivery date. Can't imagine what it is like for something useful.

  • I bought a Lexus NX in March this year - highly recommended :)

Yeh i didnt think they would give you a discount. Maybe wait for another 6 months once its released?

  • You won’t get any discounts at all on cars.

It’s why we kept to buying commercial only vehicles this year and no resi cars as normally there isn’t much discount on the low margin base commercial cars we buy.

Don’t expect to get $40k off a $140k Mercedes’ these days - especially with their new model coming up next year.

If you don’t want to wait, you’ll have to pay full price for that Lexus now, otherwise wait till end of 2022 beginning of 2023 - if we’re all still here.

    • Mercedes and bmw hasn't been doing been doing deep discounts since they were sued for giving centrelink people loans for 100k cars I thought?

  • Bad time to buy a car, be it new or used. Don't expect a discount or a good price.

  • Shop around honestly, we went to Hyundai and all there SUV had 6months waiting. Walked across the road and could get a vw tiguan with luxury pack next week

This is what happens when the govt prints over half a trillion dollars and gives a heap to people who don't actually need it.

    • I think giving money to continue economy was good move. But just the way was handed over … was not so good.

I have (now moved out) neighbour who has crap business (like literally no sale/consulting). No employees. Zero business. Just on paper. But she claimed payments. She’s very very well off and shouldn’t have been getting any money at all.

SUVs with trash centre of gravity. They're doing you a favour

Why is centre of gravity relevant? Is OP racing?

I went to multiple dealers and all of them are selling at very near advertised price. Through autoexpert, I got qoute which is 7% less than currently advertised DA. It is not great but in the current market felt that is the best I could get.

    • I am using them and another dude to find me a new Subaru Forester atm, what % discount you would expect normally?

      • Near 12% was a probability. In the current market, you won't get that much.

  • 30% markup for dealers 😂😂 did you smoke crack before you posted this weak arse whiny thread

    • Mercs and BMW did do deep discounts, but mainly if you got finance though them.
As posted earlier, they got in big trouble as most who got these deals were on low income earners. Aka someone making 40k a year, getting a X5 for 90k.

Try a car broker and see if they can get you any sort of deal, but if not you either have to cop it or just wait it out, probably 2 years before we get back to pre-covid stock levels.

The Australian economy was hanging on by a string pre-covid stimulus, so when the government says we will be back to pre-covid conditions soon… That won't be great. That's when dealers will be back to giving big discounts to make sales targets like they were in 2019.

    • We used a car broker and saved about $2500 on a new Toyota that was priced around $42000 at each of the Toyota dealers we visited. We ordered March 2020 and had to wait a few months for delivery so even with COVID supply issues, dealerships were still offering discounts - not sure why/if that’s changed since then.

I’m not really the type that likes to haggle so going to a broker worked well for us.

The wife and I also both applied separately for credit cards offering cash back on $X spend in the first few months so effectively saved a further $2000.

  • Lol 30%. On a 95k car your looking at 10k max profit. They make all their money from servicing etc.

Let me guess, another city-dweller buying another SUV just because it's cool, and everyone else is doing it?

  • You will never get 30% anywhere, dunno where you pulled that from. Probs get like 15% from German brands but not in this current climate. Also, Lexus is well known to give minimal discount. 10% if your lucky.

  • Wow, 95k for what will prove to be an underpowered Toyexus. To think 3 years ago I was offered either a brand new Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio or a Jeep Trackhawk for not much more than $95k, how far we've come since then.

I know a bicycle shop with 10% discount so there is the solution for OP.

The best SUV to buy in 2022 is a wagon.

      But SpOrtZ and UtiLItY!

    For $95k+ get Porsche Macan.

    • Brand new?

      • Yep, check prices.

        • +2

You are right, base model 2022 Macan is $96k driveaway in Melb.
          2.0L turbo 195kw/400nm. 0-100 in 6.4sec!
Damn If I had spare $100k that would be my pick!
