Automatic Pool Cover - Cheaper DIY Solutions

My parents are getting a bit older and are finding it difficult to cover/uncover their pool, so I'm looking into an automated pool cover solution for them. There are some commercial solutions available (which we're looking into), but this seems like something that shouldn't be insane to DIY, seeing as its basically a sideways roller door with an insulated blanket. Though I also understand there's likely a bunch of safety considerations and legalities, and I can't really think of a way of doing it without creating a bunch of tripping hazards.

So I'm intrigued if anyone has managed to do this and how, or are the commercial solutions the only way to go?

  • Is the pool rectangular or odd shaped?

    • Rectangular with a protrusion on the side on the side where the steps are. So it would either need to run over the top on ground level or just leave the protruding surface area uncovered.

      • Cool. I can't help you. I was just curious.

  • Are you already using pool roller?

    • Yeah they already own a roller and blanket.

      • Attach a string to the blanket might help.

  • Not sure a roller door controller would do it. You’ll need to be able to wind it out, and wind it back. Roller door rely on a spring and gravity to assist. Most pools I’ve seen are horizontal on top.

I'd be keen to see the ones that were not :-)

Do they need help with anything else? Maybe it's time for them to hire a few hours assistance each week with things like that. I bet vacuuming and mopping isn't as easy as it used to be as you get old.
