Interesting, I was not aware the Pimax sold on Amazon AU. I've been out of the VR game for quite awhile now, what are the general opinions and reviews on Pimax headsets though? I currently run HP Reverb G2 with Index controllers.

    • the anecdotal reports I've read suggest its the best visually, hence why I'm tossing over whether to snap one up

  • anyone used one? I've been considering one, but their sword controllers are still vaporware. Also it's expensive.

I noticed this a few days ago and I've been very intrigued. I've only just entered the VR space and bought the Oclulus Quest 2 a couple of days ago, and have already spent over $200 on additional accessories (and probably more to come…) so will have spent close to 700 already. Plus I have a 3080 ti, so can make full use of it.

I'm researching now to see if this has full body tracking. I'm more just wary of forking the funds out now for a VR headset when it seems like we're in that phase where upgrades will become more and more significant year to year (and Quest 2 is now a 2 year old model)

Currently full body tracking is something you DIY yourself using vive pucks and or xbox Kinect. Not really the realm of the headset sellers yet (they are having a tough enough time just pushing the headset tech).
Unless you just meant room scale moving around games. In which case its based on Vive/Steam tracking and uses that, so is good.

Thank you so much! I think I might wait for now with my Quest 2, and see what 2022 brings (with Oculus and potentially Apple set to release new things)

Think Pimax just announced their 12K next gen model as well, but just looked it up and it'll "start" in price around $2.4K USD (!!) so might be too much for now lol

Like the other comment said, you can pretty much calibrate Vive pucks to work with almost any VR headset. The biggest downside is that you must purchase the Vive base stations separately along with 3 Vive pucks. Does it work well? More or less I guess, every now and then you will have to re-calibrate them which can be annoying sometimes. The first time calibration itself is quite easly, you just download a program on Steam called "OVR Advanced Settings" and basically just hold your controller/headset with the Vive puck and move it around until the calibration is complete. There are plently on guides and videos online showing how to do it.

If you'd like it to work straight out the box, then you will need a headset that uses the HTC Vive base station ecosystem, such as the Valve Index or HTC Vive( don't recommend). I wanna ask though, why do you want full body tracking? I don't really know of many or any games that actually utilize this function. VRChat is the only game I can think of where a lot of people will purchase Vive pucks for full body tracking, myself included.

An alternative to Vive trackers is something called the Thundra tracker which seems to be quite promising, but it's a kickstarter product. I would recommend you watch videos from this channel for your latest VR related news and information. It has been quite awhile since any new innovative VR technology has come out, so be on the look out for those before you buy anything.

      • I was going to buy this today - but found out you’ll need to spend $1-2K+ on additional stuff (controllers, base stations, etc) to actually use it…. had to pass for now on the $3K+ investment :(

The wider FOV is what is really drawing me to the Pimax

So I have an older pimax and I love it.
The pros are the super wide field of view compared to my previous WMR. It's relatively comfortable. Tracking via the base stations is awesome. Gaming support is only getting better.
You can order a pimax headset and base stations index controllers from their website directly at added cost.
The downside is it can be a bit fiddly at times playing with their software to get it right (I had issues at the start getting the image to my liking but now I just throw it on and I'm good to go). Also they have a 1 year warranty on everything. So if your index controller dies then you are shit out of luck.

Would I buy it again? Absolutely.

A final note, the 8kx needs a pretty high end GPU for the higher refresh rates and fallout 4 is horribly optimised so don't hang your hat on that experience.

    • Think a 3070 might cut the mustard for the 8kx?

Depends on the game. Half Life alyx was no problem on my 6700xt with a 5k plus. but fallout and Skyrim melt my 3080. Beat saber plays well on anything reasonable.

    • what controllers do you have? and does it play steamVR and oculus games?

  • Don't forget their trade in offer, buy any headset now and get full purchase price off when you trade in to upgrade to the 12k. Takes some of the sting out of the ridiculous 12k price.

I have the Pimax 4k and would get Pimax again, just be prepared to spend more time tweaking compared to others.

does it fit people with wide heads? My Reverb G2 is for thin faces

    • What did you buy for base stations and controllers?

  • Can you upscale/downscale the resolution percentage to suit performance needs like with other SteamVR headsets?

    • +2

Yes if it yses steam vr

  • -3

Jyst get reverb g2 v2 for $999. This one sucks

  • Might be worth checking out mrtv
