Synology DS1621xs RAM Upgrade

Just tried to upgrade from 8G ram to 2X 16G ram with Timetec compatible ram, the NAS played dead on me when first time booting. Blue lights flashing all the time only for idle. Manual said it possible motherboard or power supply problems. Need to get it booting again before send it back to RAM. I had tried to unplug all devices off the NAS even without hard drives, it is still not booting and flashing blue light. RAM is back to services after holiday on 17 Jan. It is too bad and only myself to blame for it.

Does anyone has the experience for this one, thanks!

  • I had to read this a couple times before I realised you meant RMA… I might be the only one to have proofread.

Anyway, did you try it with the original ram stick?

32gb seems like overkill for a NAS. Unless you're running a couple tabs of chrome

    Never heard of Timetec?

Suggest using compatible Crucial or Kinston RAM modules for the upgrade.

Struggling to comprehend some of your statements. Sounds like you have swapped back to the original ram with the same fault? Are you sure you seated the ram correctly? Watch some youtube videos. If the original ram works, try one stick of the replacement ram at a time. Make sure you use the same slot for a single stick that was used originally

  • I would not dare to mix these two brands ram into the system. You might be right about 2x16GB timetec ram is over kill for Synology DS 1621xs, But it is acceptable by watching the youtube video channel. Timetec is based at S.Cal and specialises in ram and the model I bought which is tersuitable and replacement for DS1621xs, written on the amazon vendor website. So I was very confident to insert 2 rams into the slots at once. But the system did not boot up and panicked a bit, and pulled 2 rams out and inserted the original 8GB Synology ram back in, the system was still dead and flashing blue. I then changed the slot and swapped the position of 2 rams, all useless and the system was not reacting at all. Now I thought would it be making a difference if I only inserted one 16GB into one the slot at the beginning. Perhaps the ram or rams that I received is faulty. No other explanation.
