Is There a Reasonable Price to Pay Scalpers for a PS5?

Update: 7 Jan 2022. Sorry OzB Fam. I had to go against the majority advice and buy for 950 at eBay. I did the SocialGoods cashback thing, so I hope it pans out.

I have been watching and waiting for almost a year to get my hands on a PS5 console now, unsuccessfully!!

Do you think that it is time to give up and pay the scalpers the extra money to get my hands on one?

I am seeing that a lot of people are selling at $1000. Is that a good price? How much would you pay? Or do you recommend holding out till next year and not supporting those stupid scalpers?

$750 retail or nothing. Don't support scalpers.

Also you really do need the official warranty for any defects or issues. There's been dozens of stock drops over the year, you'll get yours soon enough.

Yeah, depends how much you value your time
If you are happy to wait 1-3 months following @ps5australia twitter bot whenever stock comes out to fight for a 20% chance of getting one sure
If you can afford $900-$999 thats a fair price I'd say $950 is the cheapest you will get one

Another tip is to call all your local JB Hifi to join their waiting list for PS5.
Some won't let you do it over the phone but plenty will take your details and call you when they have stock.
You have 2 days to pickup
Some I called only had 60 waiting list

$0 is a good amount to pay scalpers.

    • 30% discount for such luxury goods, walk away if not at least 10% discounted. Lexus or ps5…

  • I bought one (retail price), honestly as someone with a PS4, there isn't really any games that I "really" want to play that wasn't already on PS4 (especially if you have a pro). At least not right now.

Thats not to say its bad at all, especially with newer games coming out. At retail, if you can get it, then sure go for it, especially how hard it is to get, its worth retail for sure. But I wouldn't pay a scalper for (at least for me) something that will sit there until a few more games come out.

Maybe you should sell your PS5 to OP

You needed to sign up to the PS5 Alerts Australia on twitter.

I was that adamant I would get one, that I waited specifically for Amazon. Then when it dropped, I got the notification and acted fast.

Please do not give in and buy through scalpers.

Downloaded the app, created a new Twitter account, followed them, and hit the bell icon.

      • When did you do that?

@gamesnepal: Great. Hopefully some more drops for you in the first couple of weeks in Jan.

This time of year it is a little quiet, but that page is fantastic. I know it is tempting seeing them online with scalpers, but it is just not worth it purely for warranty purposes on a really good console.

If I hear anything before the twitter feed, I will send you a PM. I have a mate who works at Big W and they tend to know when it might come in which is an indicator for other places to have stock:)

      • There are 90,000 plus subscribers on Twitter PS5 alerts Australia. When I joined 3-4 months ago there was 60,000.
Good luck getting one through Twitter alerts.

You have better chance putting your name downn at JB or EB.

        • I managed to get a disc version on the Big W drop - 22nd December, It took 4 months of trying every time the Twitter Alerts landed.
          So happy with the system.

Good luck to anyone attempting to get hold of one.

i thought we ozbargainers dont talk to anyone who pays RRP!

      • -2

Hahaha… you must be new here. Have you not met the “bUt bEiNg iN sToCk MaKeZ iT a BaRgAiN!!1!” crowd in the RRP/in stock notification posts?

    • or Gerry Harvey. (oh, I guess you already mentioned him). lol

  • I agree with everyone about not buying from scalpers. But no one will say anything to people selling cars at a higher price than what it’s worth etc.
    Supply and demand…

Let's not forget the ultimate example of such practice that is widely accepted: real estate.

      • i think we can agree that both the above mentioned items are a bit more critical than a new console!

Is There a Reasonable Price to Pay Scalpers for a PS5?

People that want to play will pay the market price. The rest will have to wait and 🙏 that the price goes down.

    That is how markets work.

Don't buy from scalpers. That's all folks.

Where is the poll option for less than retail, because technically it is 2nd hand, or at the very least has some of the warranty time already gone by the time you purchase it "new"?

  • I had my name on a list at jbhifi, took 4 weeks before they called me. I had gotten one from amazon during that time, but seems reasonably quick, especially if you hit a couple of them. Might even be quicker if you didn't care if it was digital or disc.

$900 is very reasonable. PS consoles generally last at least a decade until a new version comes out. An extra $100 here or there over something you use for 10 years + isn't going to make a difference to your wealth.
