not compliant with Australian safety standards

Should not be imported into Australia then!!

    • Interesting comprehensive comment by @cwongtech in response to jv on previous deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/11470378/redir

Difference is the lack of additional paint on the outer pin joins? Still would not risk :|

Are you saying it is not earthed ?

It's earthed (the middle prong is the earthing prong)

Just that the positive and negative prongs do not have insulation/paint on them.

Not really an issue unless you have tiny fingers that can slip in between the plug and the powerpoint.

Also, this technically doesn't comply with Australian standards because of that.

Older powerboards/extension cords did not have this insulation either.

According to this website, the insulation requirement (for complying with australian standards) came into effect on the 3rd of April, 2005(accesscomms.com.au)

      Insulated pins example:

"it is not compliant with Australian safety standards"

    No thanks.

    • +4

Should it be upvoted for being upfront informative for once ;D

      • Hehehe good point… at least they're honest about selling a firestarter :^)

  • +3

Since when did safety not matter with power strips? Goodness!

    • -1

      …since China

  • Not safe. Not good. Bang good.

  • +3

    I don’t think thats legal

  • +7

Report to Product Safety Australia to have this product banned.

  • Lol so many negs (and not one for the expensive price) and hate but not a single one on the good bang thread.

It's interesting that people think something not meeting Australian standards is not safe. If you have made your own kit or product and if you dont get it Australian Tested, then it is not Australian Approved but not illegal to use and can be quite safe. My 1980's pinball machine is not current Australian Safety standards compliant nor approved and it has been plugged in for decades and NOT burnt the house down.

If you import anything electrical from overseas (except maybe NZ) it will almost certainly NOT be Aus certified. BUT that does not equal unsafe. By the way, I've have earlier models of these Xiaomi boards and had them plugged in for years and years - they still work great, while the cheap stuff meeting Aust standards I got from bunnings, arc, crackle, have poor connections and some even stink of burning electrical when in use. I replaced them with these!

You cannot sell something new in Australia that is not certified. That is the issue Amazon AU is breaching. But you can legally import and safely use it for personal use.

    • +2

How do insurance companies view this? If your house burns down & the firies determine that a non-compliant powerboard was the source, will you still be covered? I'd rather not take the risk for the sake of saving a few bucks, especially given how expensive it is to re/build now.

      • Just to be annoying, has everyone read the PDS to check ehwther

        • +1

I think it's just safer to assume that insurance companies - all of whom are scumbags - will leverage anything they can to avoid paying a claim, and it's reasonable to expect they would consider a non-certified electrical item sufficient grounds not to pay out.

          • +1

@The Judge: Accidentally smashed post button 😅

Does insurance cover any power board that's used for a prolonged period of time?

I watched a PSA on TV years ago saying that double adapters and power boards should only be a temporary solution to avoid fires.

    • +1

imo there's a clear difference between not being certified compliant with Australian standards, and explicitly not being compliant with Australian standards

      • +1

Well aside from the pins, which are like the ones that I grew up with and I still use some of those items and my house never burnt down, how is this explicitly not compliant? Meanwhile I have "compliant" ones melt and smell burning.

        • We need to do all we can to save the lives of our future leaders ;)

Amazon has updated its Alexa voice assistant after it "challenged" a 10-year-old girl to touch a coin to the prongs of a half-inserted plug.
…Amazon told the BBC in a statement that it had updated Alexa to prevent the assistant recommending such activity in the future.

  • I voted + because the store owner is local

  • +2

Would steer clear if not Australian standards compliant. What happens if your house burns down as a result of this? Your home insurance would not cover you?!

  • regardless of Au standard compliant topic, this is actually a pretty good quality product
However, looked at the price sold in China, this is not a bargain price event with a free MFI cable.

  • They Are good I have a a few been using for years
    but best one is
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Xiaomi-Charging-Extension-Standard…, Pity its so expensive

    Edit:

But this one is cheaper :) than the one I just mentioned..

  • These negs remind me every time a scooter deal gets posted…

  • +3

Your house will be most likely burns down by something 'Australian standards compliant'…

  • +4

Bet you there's people who are negging that are also using a outdated board that dont meet current compliance standards

    • +1

It's astonishing how this is getting negged because of one easily avoidable risk (esp. most of the wall sockets have a switch and people do switch it off before unplugging), while there's a myriad of other rules people are willing to break to save some effort or dough.

I wonder what other countries have plugs with the prongs painted in case somebody doesn't know not to touch them.

    • +4

      Came here to say this!

I appreciate the honesty with the seller and I’d have no problem using one of these at home. If you are really worried, get someone to come out and test/tag all your appliances

  • I've been using the previous versions for years. Never had an issue. They are well built. The safety switch/surge protection trips as it should, they don't get hot from use unless you're smashing it with power tools or multiple 2000w heaters. The power switch stays off if there was loss of power and needs to be turned back on. Best of all, no need for plug converters if you buy something from overseas (with the exception of UK plug).

    • Hey tokimonkey, I can't message you as I think you have that feature turned off, but I wanted to let you know about the refillable oil Sprayer you highlighted on amazon as $3.99 from another seller, I found out today the tracking that seller provided went to another city and he's vanished from Amazon so had to request a refund. Completely forgot about it until Amazon asked me to review the item, just wanted to give you a heads up in case you ordered and forgot too

      • I got refunded as soon as the tracking said delivered.
