Washing Machine Pump Repair - Bosch

The water out pump on our 4 year old Bosch WAK24161AU front loader washing machine has died (hair ties, hair clips, baby socks). Everything else on the machine is fine. Bosch have said it's out of warrantly and they will charge for repairs. Is this something worth DIY repairing for $100ish or is it time to get a new machine? And should we be putting all our washing in wash bags prior to loading into the machine?

I am on my second Bosch, the other one died after a decade. Access to the pump is not difficult if you can get up under the machine.
The pump just plugs and clips in, doesn’t require anything complex.
I would certainly repair it myself.

  • Whats a washing bag? and why wouldnt you just toss your clothes in the machine?

normally used for things that catch on other items e.g. bra clasps can tear other clothing

Why would they warrant it because you ran foreign objects through it?

Replace the pump, remove foreign objects from clothes before washing.

  • has died (hair ties, hair clips, baby socks).

You can clean the pump, it has a access cover in the front so these items don't get suck.

I've never heard of a baby sock getting stuck in a pump!

My first bosch lasted well over 10 years, was around 12 I think. So dropping $100 on a pump vs $700+ for a new machine seems ok.

And should we be putting all our washing in wash bags prior to loading into the machine?

If you can't fish out all the stuff that is getting suck in the pump, then yeah I guess so.

This is step one. The reason I know the pump is easy to access is from removing it several times to remove the thin things that got stuck in it.
Make sure you have 100% cleared it before you order a new pump.
One time it was a fragment on beach shell the size of a finger nail clipping lodged under the impeller (from memory, there are a couple of places stuff gets stuck).

$100 for a pump makes sense, should get at least a few more years out of it compared to shelling out hundreds for a new one.

Really you should be taking the hair bands and clips out before washing. Small items/delicates should always go in a wash bag. Surprised baby socks got stuck in there, it does make me wonder if other damage had been done to make a hole big enough to suck those through.

Plenty of "how to.." videos on YouTube that takes you through the procedure on replacing a pump on the Bosch.

I found one to fix my LG, they even suggested the part number and it took less than an hour. Found it on eBay total cost less than $60.

  • Off subject your meant to zipper up and button garments as well as check pockets before you wash as the zipper acts as an abrasive shortening the life of your clothes.
I agree with others Ebay will be your cheapest way out and youtube is your friend.

  • Just did this the other night. Water wasn't draining so watched a few YouTube videos and got access to the pumps.

Already removed something stuck in the front pump .

When I took off the other pump, I found fabric had wound its way around the blades so once I removed it and put it back together, all was solved and working again.

Only took me just over an hour too and felt super pleased with myself (not normally a DIYer).

Hope it gives you the inspiration to give it a go.
