Selling unwanted Prizes - Where to Sell + How Do Dodge Trolls?

Fairly new to OzBargain forum side of things, although have frequented the comps side for many a long time.

Where do people sell their unwanted prizes?

My first thoughts were FB Marketplace or Gumtree (would prefer to steer clear of eBay - high seller fees).
FB Marketplace (even in the groups specific to my area) has come up trumps …. except for a troll trying to incite a hate filled dialogue between myself and him.

Have even priced the prizes/items at 15% less than what current stores are selling same items.

Have won a few things over the years, most recent is an IT package worth $4000+ (which I am currently trying to sell). Around 2018'ish … I won a a V8 Commodore ute in a comp (which I traded in @ the dealership for a car that more suited my needs).

Anyone know of legit places to sell unwanted items/prizes? I am fully aware scams … such that, asking cash + meeting face-to-face.

    Cash Converters

"Have even priced the prizes/items at 15% less than what current stores are selling same items."
Many would rather get a new item with rock-solid warranty, and ozbargainers never pay full price.

    • nah, cashconverters will give you bugger all

I've never considered Cash Converters as an option before …. personally feel that they are the lowest denominator out there (IMO even FB marketplace are better than CC).

the items/prizes are all brand new (unboxed) … you are correct, they don't come with "store warranty" (hence why I priced 15% cheaper) - but majority of manufacturers still accept item warranty "after the fact" + ACCC involvement.

mwalks … IF you feel that 15% markdown for a sale of "like-for-like" compared to retail prices is unacceptable - where do you think the limit/price should be set?

[EDIT] :my price comparsion (15%) was also during boxing day sales … there are some major IT stores still selling same item for $300 more than what I originally based my figures from (hence they are truly ripping ppl off with their charges).

Depends what the item is, current market supply & demand etc. 15% isn't really enough incentive to bother with the hassle of dealing with a private seller with potential scams and warranty difficulty. Especially when you can get 5-10% off pretty regularly from stores directly.

You mentioned IT items. If it's a GPU, you'll get a bite. If it's a wireless router than highly unlikely. An iPhone, forget about it.

Not sure where you mentioned a laptop above but yes, you're not going to get legit interest for just 15% off. Not worth the risk or hassle for most people hence you're getting scam messages.

I would suggest the attitude doesn't help either but won't judge from just one interaction.

A quick ctrl-F shows that laptop/notebook were not used earlier.

In any case, Hybroid was not 'mincing' anything.

He was merely trying to be helpful with options, if this, then yes, if that, then no.
As nothing else other than an IT package worth $4000 was mentioned, and that could be anything.

100% the attitude makes you sound like a troll yourself, esp when people are trying to help you out.

I wish you less luck for future contests.

Doesn't sound like you deserve them.

My local IGA has a noticeboard … Starting to think this is my best bet.

FB marketpalce == a troll + 10+ msgs trying to scam me.

You get what you pay for. The cost of posting is the time spent blocking trolls. 15% off isn't worth the hassle to most people so hard to find that needle in the haystack who might buy it at that price.

So much for a "sorely needed" laptop…

I always set a fair price when selling on Gumtree & FBMP but indicate that it's negotiable.

After a few weeks, if I want to sell something badly enough, I drop the price.

If OP is selling goods at only 15% off RRP they are asking too much as a savvy shopper can often get that by just haggling and shopping around.

Start at least 25% off, if they are unwanted prizes whatever OP gets for them is virtually free money, and ignore or block the scams/trolls.

    • +1

OP wants to sell items they won for more than the market price. Not sure if OzBargain is the place to ask how to do this.

  • +7

Keep dropping the price until people start making offers. How is this difficult to comprehend? Don’t get greedy for something you won.

  • eBay fees are 13 percent.

    Seems fine.

  • Have you tried listing the actual items for sale in Ozbargain?? You would likely receive comments as to whether people believe it to be overvalued and if your negotiable say so in the post you may get a bite.

Unfortunately across all mediums you're going to get trolls or people pushing for lower pricing, it comes part and parcel with listing items.

As for it being a prize, could you send an email to the supplier and enquire as to whether it will receive the same support/warranty as if bought new. I've done this previously and had it confirmed, then registered product as normal. Will show that email down the track if there are any issues. If you had this could include the email trail with the sale to provide additional value.

Just seen your profile says your in Canada…may be better asking people from Canada if that is where you're based.

  • I dont believe anyone has unwanted prizes from these comps - specially multiple prizes… i dont believe anyone wins… well unless you count 100+ spam emails daily now a win

    • You definitely want a separate email if you enter a lot of comps. Fortunately, Gmail seems to be able to pick up most winning notification emails since I guess it can tell when it's an email from an actual person vs a bulk/noreply email. Definitely a stats game.. You enter a lot and you win a couple. :D

      • yep, just a throw away addy …

Gmail seems to be able to pick up most winning notification emails

I dont think I'll ever find out.

    • The best ones to enter are game of skill or creative.

I have won an ozbargain comp got like twenty dollars.

Just requires more effort than clicking.

You could always only enter competitions for things you actually want to win. Then you would've have this problem :P

No way I'd even consider an item from a private seller for just 15% off an in store price. Unless it's something I need right now I usually don't even buy from a store for less than a 20% discount.

Buying from a private seller, even if new in box, there's a lot more risk and you have no recourse if something goes wrong. It'd depend on the item but I'd want 30% minimum, maybe up to 50%. If it's an actual used/open item it'd need to be 50% minimum. That's just me. You may well get people that are willing but it'll take much longer and waste more time.

Ebay with a $1 final value deal probably. But they deduct the final value fee now before you are paid out regardless. Amazingly they protected me against a scammy buyer recently. So much less hassle and less time wasters

  • I usually go with eBay for more expensive things just for peace of mind. FB is my second preference as it's easier to reply and you can see their FB profile if you feel the need to suss them out. If it's not getting much interest on FB then I'll also list on Gumtree. When selling on FB or Gumtree (in general and not just for prizes), I write [Price firm] at the start of the listing to try to avoid any lowballers/trolls and just slowly drop the price depending on interest.

The real question is how are you even winning competitions in the first place…something fishy going on here…🤔

    • Does entering competitions from Canada give OP an edge? lol

      • Maybe OP is in the Canadian embassy.

  • +1

not ebay due to "item not received" scammers etc. better to deal with people in person and no refunds when it's out your door.
