Very cheap for a brand name 5.1 system. Retail price seems to be around $169, but most places are selling for $130ish. JB Hi-Fi is doing them for $78 delivered is a bargain, even if it is a basic system that has been superseded.

when 5.1 was introduced, people paying just over $1000 for a Sony set not even as good as these power wise. I guess good enough for the gaming room.

    dvd….

i bought one of these a few months back, cause it's the cheapest i could find that had an optical input (for the PS3).
suprisingly good sound for the price. i'd get another one if i needed 10.2 sound…

  • +2

Good price. I love how it has an optical input (you can plug in a PS3 as phase3 said or another bluray player or something else). I'd get it if I didn't already have a home theatre setup. I might get it for a friend or a relative as a birthday gift. Nice entry point into all that surround sound stuff for anyone who is just using the tv speakers.

  • Can you use these as standalone speakers and not use the dvd player? Or do all the input/output have to go through the unit?

    • You may be able to use the speakers on another receiver but the subwoofer might be linked to the dvd player. Hopefully someone can confirm.

    • +1

nope. all the speakers have what (i'm assuming) are samsung's own-design connectors ie not naked-wire speaker connections (i have no idea what they're called).
and i only really use it because of it's optical input. divx, mkv files etc i play through a pc hooked up to the tv connected to this via AUX stereo RCA plugs - you don't get the surround sound mix, but it's still better than tv speakers

I would have considered it if it had HDMI out. No HDMI no deal.

  • +2

    FYI:
According to Samsung's product specs: "DTS - No"

Also this has no HDMI output, so make sure you have component inputs on your TV. Or composite (shudder).

  • Hi, i have a 22" sharp tv in the shed and watch most of my tv, movies etc from a usb harddrive. is it possible to watch from usb and put the soun
    d out through this unit?

    • if your TV has optical out, should be able to

      • or just the traditional old av out….

  • So i'm assuming this 1) has no hdmi out and 2) cannot play high quality mkv files

I know it's more than twice the price, but I think the "Samsung HTD4600XY 3D 100 Watt 5.1 Channel Blu Ray Satellite Home Theatre System" ($198 delivered) is better value for money. Specs here.

I think in the long run if you buy the cheaper system you'll wish you spent the extra $120 to get a much better (HDMI, HD sound formats, 3D support) system, IMO.

    • do you have it? how it is?

      • +3

No I don't own either. I'm basing my opinion on the manufacturer's specs, 20 years of HT experience, and many more years of buying the cheaper alternative and wishing I'd spent a bit more on the better model.

        :D

    • I went in to JB intending to get the $78 package for the bedroom, and walked out with the Samsung HTD4600XY instead.

I've tried a few avi files on USB, and it only outputs them in black & white. Even after stopping these files, the video output sometimes remains in black & white until I turn the unit off and on again.

Could this be a setup issue or a faulty unit?

      • I'd give Samsung a call on Monday. That doesn't sound right.

        • Swapped from composite to component output (It's connected to an older plasma with no HDMI).
Seems all good now. At least it was an easy fix.

  • how would this compare to having the logitech 5.1 http://www.logitech.com/en-za/speakers-audio/home-pc-speaker… speakers for a PC? Advantage for me is the remote and fm tuner.

    • +1

If you go with the Samsung, make sure your PC has a "Dolby Digital Live" encoded optical output if you want 5.1. Otherwise you'll be stuck with stereo sound.

Most PCs have 5.1 analogue outputs (which the Samsung can't take) or DTS encoded 5.1 optical output (which I don't think it supports, according to Samsung's specs).

The safe bet would be the Logitechs. I know they have 5.1 analogue input.

      • My mobo is GA-770TA-UD3. Had a look for specs and couldn't find out if has support for DDL or DTS. Is there any other way to check it like software utility, etc?

        • You'll have to look in your control panel under sound. Look for "Realtek HD Audio Manager" or something similar. There should be a setting for digital output. It should tell you in there.

  • Great price, I also picked up one of these for $268 http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/carseldine/Samsung_DVD_HTIB_10… three weeks ago. They changed it to $299 afterwards unfortunately.

  • : ) been waiting for something cheap with optical input……..the samsung tv we have only supports this

  • I bought a 2.1 speakers from Altec Lancing for around $55 at MSY 2 years ago. Compared that, this is great as a standalone 5.1 speakers.

Forget about the DVD player etcs. I can't even remember when was the last time I watched a movie from DVD (probably over 12 years ago).

    • Interesting that you watched your last DVD in early 2000 (12 years ago from today), given that DVD wasn't very popular in Australia that time (first DVD movie released in Australia was in 1999). I remmeber bought my first DVD player in late 2000 (latest model bought from Singpore). The local video stores only stocked like only dozen or so DVDs.

  • does this have optic audio in? i have a lg cinema 3d tv and trying to by pass dts issue

  • I bought these yesterday, didn't even think of posting it here. Guess I'm no true OzBargainer. And for those wondering, it doesn't come with an included digital audio (optical) cable, so you'll have to buy one yourself.

    • Optical cables are easy to get online for discount prices, much like HDMI instore prices vs online.

  • Saw a few positive comments above - is this a good system at an entry level? I'm moving soon and need something entry level (better than TV speakers) that is very small.

  • bought one for the bedroom.. can't really go wrong at this price. :)

  • How is this compared to the Z5500?

    • Yea considering buying this as I have a z2300.

  • Do the small sat speakers like that generally come with stands? or do they have after-market stands available?

  • Yea how are these compared to the Logitech z530 5.1 that were going for $50 on LTS.

  • really tempted to get this for my folks.

  • I got this delivered today, only to discover it wont play my Ipod through the USB function. Bit of a shame.

USB Error. Not supported USB device. :(

    • +1

      Just use one of these.

I use one of these for wireless streaming to my HT system from my iPad and iPod touch.

      • Cheers Chris, went and picked one up the next day as it happens. :)

Then yesterday i discovered the No.2 issue that Atlas has posted about below. Now waiting on a Xbox 360 Dongle.

There's a lesson in here somewhere about impulse buying i'm sure. :)

  • So here's some things to keep in mind:

    1. Speakers most likely use normal audio cables and will plug into the subwoofer. Probably reusable. Subwoofer definitely will not be reusable if the main unit fails.

    2. Optical input is good, but make sure you connect sources that output 5.1. The PS3 will output 5.1, but most TVs will only output 2 channel stereo from the optical output.

    3. If you have multiple devices that you want to use these speakers for, that may be a logistical problem if you consider the TV 2 channel output issue. For example you may have a PS3, Bluray player, and a Media player like WDTV Live.

Most people will hook up their devices to their TV via HDMI and then output all sound via the TV. You will most likely not get 5.1 this way. In addition, you can only plug one of those devices into the Samsung speakers via optical. There ARE optical cable switches, but these are usually manual switching units.

    1. Why would you care if this unit does or does not have HDMI out? The only possible video output that it could offer is DVD and to be honest you most likely already have a standalone DVD player with HDMI output.
