Options Available for an Old Working 2003 Nissan X-Trail

Hi folks,

I have a Nissan X-Trail 2003 in Victoria, It is in a good working condition though it has run 198 KMs.

We are currently in VIC but planning to move to NSW shortly.

As I am not really sure yet whether we would need this car - so, I took it to MyCar for a RoadWorthy Certificate so that I can sell it before our move from VIC to NSW.

MyCar inspected and gave me a list of fixes that would cost me almost $4000 and the fixes are for -

(1) rear differential bushes worn
(2) front lower control arm bushes worn
(3) front wipers
(4) right rear trailing arm bent
(5) wheel alignment
(6) drive belt worn.

The $4k bill is high considering the age of the car - although it is running well, I have done a few things to it too, e.g., brand new tyres, etc. If we relocate with this car to NSW, I will still have to pay perhaps a similar price before the car can be registered in NSW.

If I do the fixes in VIC paying $4K and try to sell the car in VIC - I doubt I would get more than a mere $1000 or so from the sale (after deducting the cost for the fixes).

Now, I am not sure what other options I have, if any, and how beneficial those options would be!

Wonder if you have any advice?

Shop around to see if anyone offers a better price for the fixes.

You could get a roadworthy from a more dodgy person (a roadworthy guy from facebook marketplace for example) and sell the car, be honest to any buyers of the issues.

When I've got a roadworthy done from a guy who came to my house, he didnt look under the car or anything.

You What? "You could get a roadworthy from a more dodgy person…" and knowingly put peoples lives in danger or way out of pocket!!
Just forewarning of faults is stupidity.if you think you are doing anyone a favour with an Illegal RWC.

It is a Roadworthiness Inspection for a reason….to protect lives and welfare.

I may get negged but you are being an idiot. So is the moron that looked at your car as you state.

Anyone trying to circumvent the Road Safety Laws and or RWC Rules should be ashamed.

I hope QLD Transport track your dumb ass and your RWC guy down, de-register your vehicles and scrap his RWC Licence!

Very unAustralian to promote Illegal methods to sidestep Road Safety,

If you want to take it to NSW, wait as you will need to do a roadworthy check in NSW. You may find they pick up different things etc.

At worst they find another $2-3K worth of repairs, and now you are out of pocket the $4k which you wouldnt have spent if you knew this.

Then again they may not think some of the issues your mechanic has found is warranted.

That's a lot of money for that work and parts.

Just list the car for $3k with no rego, no RWC, as is, cash only, price fixed, only enquire if you have the money.

That will yield the most profit.

    • Car's registered.
Sorry about my ignorance - but is it possible to make a registered car unregistered!

Yes. Hand in the plates at VicRoads and get a prorata refund.

      • yep.. note that the car will then be worth about 500 bux.

        • Should do a lot better in the market. Those Xtrails have a good reputation and the k's aren't too high.

          • @Presence: handed in plates would ruin most of that - screams of too hard to get a roady

    • That's a lot of money for that work and parts.

      agree

  • Carsales has rough pricing of what Xtrails are being offered for.

    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/?q=(And.Condition.Used..(C.Make.Nissan..Model.X-TRAIL.).State.Victoria..Price.range(..20000)._.Year.range(2002..2004).)

Maybe sell as is or without RWC.

Pfft, thats maybe $1500-$2500 max worth of parts and labour.
    Mycar be shafting

But losing your roadworthy certificate is an expensive lesson.

Step one: Get another quote. They saw you coming for $4k. Half that stuff probably doesn’t need doing anyway.
Step 2 then make your decision.

I was in a similar situation a couple of years back. Old but fully functional car which would've needed a fair bit of work to get a roadworthy, and likely undesirable to sell without one. So I ended up donating it to Kids Under Cover.

  • Just to help your decision.

Wipers would be less than $20 to buy and you can do it yourself (or super cheap charges like $5)
Wheel alignment $60-80 and it’s done while you wait.
Drive belt costs $60 and you could watch a YouTube video and do it yourself.

Prob worth doing it all anyway, no matter what your decision is. The first two will make a noticeable difference and if a drive belt snaps, youre on the side of the road

sell unregistered on FB marketplace or gumtree. My mate sold a car like that.

  • I'd offer you $1,500 cash. I'm in Sydney.

  • car needs fixing… don't want to pay to fix it… if your going to sell it would you inform the new owner of the list of the things to get fixed…?, or just try to get as much money as you can? people need to look after and maintain their vehicles if they want any type of resale value… covid inflation or not.

  • Give it away to a car club or school that teaches mechanics it has little value
