Just to give a heads up. I’m now into my second year of MUBI. First year cost $40 and I had regular buffering problems which was frustrating but they seem to have sorted this out now. Still have the occasional problem but same with all streaming services. Depends a bit on your taste but have seen so many interesting movies, always something to watch. My current sub cost $70/year. Good value! Try it out.

For that kinda money you’re better off paying that extra and signing up to The Criterion Channel instead

      • Can you get it in Oz now?

        • Sadly, no.

@liongalahad: I have had since the beginning. Works fine for me

            • @Psygnosis: Not sure how , as it says it's not available in my region.

              • @liongalahad: Maybe sign up with vpn? When it first came out you didn’t need a vpn to sign up. Now you don’t even need vpn to watch it either.

@Psygnosis: Sounds good, Ill check it out
Do you knwo if there's an Andorid TV app?

    • Awesome, I dropped my subscription because the buffering problems were constant but if that's improved then I'll have to rejoin!

Be careful with Mubi. I tried their 7 day trial and cancelled it on the 6th day. They charged me at the end of the trial and did so for 3 months before I noticed. Had to argue with them to get all my money back.

      Thanks for heads up.
I'll use my Revolut virtual card for this one.

      • Do you delete/disable the card straight after?

        • -1

          Normally.
          Yes.
          Why

@FredAstair: Just wondering what best practise is. Makes sense

            • +1

              @justaddwater: Ok
              Tah.

If I liked it after the trial I’d just use my regular card to subscribe.

Like the virtual one to avoid the ‘forget to cancel’ scam

I signed up about 8 to 10 years ago for about a year. New $1.00 subs meant for NEW users still worked for me. My old email addy and password were still in the system.

  • Is Mubi just a collection of Indie Films or are there Hollywood films as well?

    • Plenty of Hollywood films also.

      • More of an arty flavour in Hollywood / Amercian movies, not the major studios generally.

It sounds counter-intuitive, but a movie leaving the library every day has got me watching, and loving, so many movies. Instead of deciding to just watch soemthing "later" and just rewatch Office for the millionth time, I feel compelled to see it in a timely fashion - sort of like a cinema.

Some films seem to be there permanently - the Three Colors trilogy is always available, and the Mubi release films always are too.

I definately think it's worth the $1 for 3 months. I did that deal a few Black Friday's ago and have subbed ever since. You gotta have an interest in art house cinema, but if you do, it's great

Also worth mentioning the entire catalog of Chaplin films.

      • That's why I originally got it.

They have a couple of early Villeneuve films (to capitalise on Dune) right now. Watched Maelstrom recently, it was great.

    • Enjoyed Polytechnique and Incendies.

I love Mubi. I'm a big indie movie fan and I've found a ton of things I've never heard of before.

  • How does it compare to SBS on demand movies?

    • +2

      No ads!

      • Not all sbs films have ads, I noticed it recently while watching High-Rise, I think?

  • I much prefer The Criterion Channel

… which is something that isn't available in Australia.

Even with Mubi, we are locked out of about 50% of their catalogue available over in US.

      • Vpn?

        • Way too much hassle.

          • @jettim76: You need vpn to sign up but not to play the movies. Works fine on Xbox and Apple TV

            • @Psygnosis: Are you sure about that ? I've tried it before but trying to play a film without VPN would always get blocked.

              • @jettim76: it's actually true, I activated the 14 day trial last night and it works, you just nee VPN to activate the subscription, then you dont need it anymore. Pretty good list of movies and generally the streaming quality is very good.
However there are few problems with this service:
                - The TV app is quite atrocious, missing basic functionalities such as fast scrolling through movies, subtitles and language settings etc.
                - subtitles are hardcoded in all non-English language movies so they can't be removed which is annoying for me as I am Italian and it's quite distracting to watch an Italian movie with Engish subtitles)
                - I have noticed some random buffering while watching movies, happened 4-5 times while watching a movie yesterday night, which never happens with any other streaming service I have (Netfilx, Amazon Prime, Kayo, Youtube premium etc)
                - the cost is quite , $15 AUD/month, basically double the cost of MUBI, not sure the service is worth that much

So far Im more inclined not to renew it, unless maybe I can find a couple of people keen to split the bill (up to 3 devices at the same time allowed), we'll see.
