Car Being Sold on Behalf of Someone Else

There are often car ads in which the seller is selling the car on behalf of someone else such as another family member or a friend.

How does the whole transfer of ownership and registration work in such cases in Victoria, and is it even possible?

Thanks

NOT very well as you need to ensure:
    1) The seller is legit
    2) The seller has the power of attorney to sell the car (and get a copy of it before you you pay)
    3) Ensure that the car passes REVS
    4) Get it inspected for issues by RACV or your mechanic
    5) Check that the registration address for the owner is the same address you are buying the car from and if it is not then ask why as it is a HUGE RED FLAG.

Does the person whose car is being sold know their “friend” is selling their car.

Also, if this is a Facebook ad just forget it - the amount of people who have been parted from their money trying to buy a car off Facebook marketplace, just don’t go there.

    However, AndyC1’s advice is solid.

    • Yeah its a Facebook ad haha.

Person is selling it on behalf of a family member. Car is $2k.

      • 2K gone in the one transaction….

Just walk away… there are plenty being sold by the genuine owner…

    YMMV

    • Op should go for it after completing the checks…… But as its a FB and friend if you know what I mean then RUN.

It's ok to buy off someone on behalf of seller, as long as you do your due diligence of paperwork.and checks.

Often people sell for their parents lacking either in administration, internet and/or English skills.

  • To be fair, my mother is technologically useless and needs other family members to do anything for her.

  • LOL I just sold a car under my Fathers name, just had him sign the Transfer paper as I couldnt get him to do anything online….

  • Depends on the reason for selling it.
I've sold my parents cars because its easier for me to deal with it than them.
I've had friends sell my car as I've been away for the weekend etc

hope that they are 'ex-friends' by now.

edit : read that as they sold your car without permission when you went away. not sure now if you meant, they helped you sell it as you were away

  • I've bought cars being sold by relatives before. Most common thing I've seen is sons/brothers selling for their mother/sisters. They are just trying to help them out and stop them getting ripped off.

As long as the paperwork is all order and you can deposit the cash or it give straight to the owner it's all good ime.
