ANZ Rental credit card insurance

I recently got an ANZ frequent flyer credit card, and I'm wondering about the Rental Vehicle Excess In Australia Insurance.

It reads:

Rental vehicle
Damage or theft Up to $5,000 each for a cardholder or a spouse, with all accompanying dependants participating in the limit available to a cardholder or a spouse, for
damage to or theft of the rental vehicle.

Does this indicates that they would cover up to $5000 excess if I damage the car? In other words, I don't have to book extra insurance with the car rental company?

Cheers in advance.

That's what it seems to imply but I would call before using it to be sure.

OP, I'd be keen to know what you find out.

  • Just make sure that to qualify for the insurance whether or not you need to charge a certain amount, or type of charge to the card

    • I think on that note it seems clear:

      • Only cardholders are eligible for Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia Insurance if the entire payment for the vehicle rental was charged to the account holder’s card account.

      Which I'm fine with.

  • Claim Excess insurance by 3rd parties can replace the "costly option" offered by the rental companies. In the event of one (or more) claims you will still pay the agreed excess to the rental agency (probably a direct charge to your credit card). You then collect the paperwork and submit to your 3rd party insurer for further processing and refund. Bear in mind it is up to $5k excess payable, for each claim lodged (eg: parking damage, theft etc). This will impact the amount of credit remaining on your credit card for several/many weeks, until refunded.
You will also need to check your rental contract for Exclusions too, like roof damage (maybe hail?), underbody damage, tyre replacement, glass (?) etc. Having said that we have never had a problem with rental cars (here or o/s).

Back when I used to actually travel, I used my ANZ card to cover rental car insurance.

The conditioning was your transport medium had to be booked on the ANZ card (flight, bus, boat, train - can't simply drive and have it activated) to the value of $250 min.
