Utilities - (Water, Internet, Gas, Electricity). Current Best Offers?

Hi all,

Quick breakdown.
I'm looking to Rent while I Build my house. I will basically be renting for 10+ months, depending when my home is completed.

I'm looking at a Unit and the owner said to me:
Utilities - comes to approximately $70/week (water, internet (fastest you'll ever find), gas, electricity) but up to you.
I could take over from her. easy option.
She's moving away to study for 10 months, it's a 2BR unit.

Is it worth me signing up myself? Is there bonuses?

I've never really stayed updated with this sector.
I appreciate any recommendations.

Thank you

Water and rates are generally the expense of the landlord. I dont know why people accept paying for those two.

    • +3

Well they can either pay with slightly higher rent or pay them explicitly. It is a cost that's going to be factored in however it is done.

Personally I would rather pay the water bill myself as then you can be in control of it by not letting taps run all day, reusing bath water in the garden etc. May end up costing less.

99% of ads I see state Water must be paid by the renter.

      • +7

Water usage and water rates are two separate things. Water rates are always incurred by the owner unless the owner is baking that in to the $70/week price. Doesn't sound like they are tho.

      • i rent and i get a water bill but i only pay the actual water usage nothing else on the bill

    • +5

Landlord can only charge water to a tenant if the individual lot or property has its own water meters.
Some apartments or shared access properties must be paid by the landlord as the individual property doesnt have its own water meter.

As a landlord myself, Gunther is right. Rates is paid by landlord, water is paid by tenant if there is a meter for the unit.

In QLD , at least in shower*, fitting must be "water efficient " before LL can charge for water use.
*can't recall if other taps like kitchen included, sold rental property a while ago.

      • not true i have a few friends in government housing units and they don’t have their own water metre but housing charge then i think 4% or 5% of the total rent paid to the unit , which can actually work out more expensive as my mate lives by himself and pays market rent so the water is limited i think to a set rate per week but it’s dearer then my bill

  • +2

That sounds very expensive. I rent an apartment - costs are approximately:

    Gas - $150 a quarter
    Electricity - $180 a quarter
Fast internet - $100 per month (you will be able to get a month or two for free when you sign up)

    Water - $0 - paid by owner
    Rates - $0 - paid by owner

Comes to about $48 a week (ignoring any free months or discounts)

I doubt Water is $20-30 a month? It could be tho?

      • My water bill is fixed in my apartment $150 a quarter.

      • i have a house of 3 adults and 2 kids and my quater water bill is under $100

    • you live alone?

      • I'll be alone.

        • I was asking @pantsparty

$50 per month on gas is a bit expensive don't you think? Simply energy is estimating mine to be $38 per month

  • internet (fastest you'll ever find)

Let's see. What speed? Is it FTTP?

    • I'm yet to ask, but I assume it's 100NBN.
It could be faster, that would be interesting if it was but I highly doubt it.

      • +2

        but I highly doubt it.

It should be much faster than 100/50 if it's "the fastest you'll ever find".

    Yes I know.

    Anyways,

Is there deals for Water, Gas etc

Bonus point sign ups? Otherwise I may be better off continuing with her account. I mean I'll be receiving the bills and I will double check the internet.

To be honest, I don't need 100nbn. I think 50nbn is fine for me alone, and that's around $60 a month with certain deals.

    • +3

There are no deals on water. In SA, water supply and usage charges are fixed by ESCOSA and provided by SA Water. There are very limited exceptions (I doubt you live in Mount Compass).

Gas and electricity you can shop around but be aware SA generally does not have peak/off peak plans that exist interstate (need a smart meter for that)

      Try https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/

      • Thank you

It sounds like it'll be easier to keep it as it is, might just swap out the internet.

    • water is only a set company for the area and you don’t get discounts like you do with gas ect

  • +4

Honestly, it will come out to be slightly less than $70/week (probably about $50-ish to low $60). But given your situation that this is just short term, I would accept the $70/week offer and not think about usage too much (enjoy using air-con as and when you like). The risk is now on the leasor. Dont bother signing up to new connections and pay for all the set up fees and termination charges etc. It is just too much hassle for very little savings.

  • Yes I would get gas and electricity sign up bonuses. Red Energy has 15000 qantas points and their rates are better than they used to be. Ovo goes through Virgin money and shopback and cash rewards has an energy section. Origin goes through everyday rewards

  • My water usage is around $30 a qtr but it costs around $160 in council charges to deliver it to the house. The owner pays the council rates ontop of this. This is in Qld.
If a house is classed as water wise the Tennant has to foot the bill.

  • I am sure there are cheaper options if you do it piece-by-piece but i've got elec, gas, NBN, and mobile with AGL (and 12mo free Amazon Prime ) and you get some excellent discounts with that

  • Legally, you are obliged to have these facilities in your name. I would have her cancel all her utilities and you take over a new arrangement

    • Yeah, I assume I will be swapping it over.
I think she's just trying to be helpful with an easy change-over than hunting around.

      :)

Just rule of thumb expect $100/ month for electricity, same for internet and same for gas. In winter more and summer less pertussis but roughly use above. That equates to $70/week! Keep it simple and for 10 months just do that. No unexpected big bills…. easy.

  • My first monthly electricity bill from remamp was $61.45

191kwh used. $35.76 for usage and $20.10 for daily supply charge. Is 191kwh usage normal or high?
