Buying a Private Car in NSW and Transferring to VIC

Hi fellow ozbargainers,

I just wanted to understand the process of buying a used car from a private seller in NSW and then bringing it to VIC.

So its a Volvo XC60 and the trim and model year are exactly what we are looking for. Given that there is a shortage of even used cars now, I am open to buying it from interstate.

In this case being a private sale, how will this process work? The sellers seem to be genuine but I will make no assumptions. If we go ahead, how we do protect ourselves from being scammed. How does the money exchange work and what is the legal entity that indicates that we are now the new owners of the car? We will fly down to NSW (Covid permitting and do the transaction in person).

Assuming this goes ahead, the car has a NSW rego until Nov 2022 which is probably useless to us. So is the correct procedure that the sellers remove the plates and return to the NSW version of Vicroads, while we get a temp rego to drive it to VIC so we can get a fresh rego on it? And if we do bring it in with the NSW rego, what is the grace period for us to register the car here?

I am a bit clueless about this and googling has not given me clear answers yet and so looking to the collective advice of you smart folks here esp if you have experience with this.

TIA!

  • seems doable. but good luck with that. the wait times at vicroads can be quite ridiculous depending on the centre. I would actually go directly to a non busy vicroads here and ask.

Selling without any rego and reregistering here is an absolutely pain i believe, even if you have an rwc done here, as vicroads need to physically inspect the car?

i'm thinking, regardless, the nsw guy will need to hand back his plates, get his rego part payment back, and you basically lose out on the rego paid (not a big deal in the scheme of things).

    • Vicroads don't inspect cars, just need a Vic issued RWC.

The easiest path is to register it under your name in NSW then go through the transfer process in Vic.

      • Yeah, how do you do that with rta without a NSW address and/or licence is a big question.

        • No. Dont do it as your will end up paying stamp duty twice.

@[Deactivated]: Not how that works. Once you own the vehicle and pay stamp duty on it, you don't have to keep paying it. If you can prove that you own it and have previously paid stamp duty on the vehicle before (ie: had it registered in another state in your name.) then you don't pay it again.

Source: Have moved interstate a few times in my life and never had to pay stamp duty again on any car/motorcycles I have owned when I re-register it in another state.

We will fly down to NSW

I sure hope the car has GPS for the trip home. Your sense of direction seems a little off.

    • +2

Technically you always fly up and down.

    • +2

Well, considering the earth is flat, it’s more like flying across. It’s neither up, nor down… </s>

North is not necessarily up. Or are you one of those people who can't read a map unless north is at the top of the page?

      • The only time op would be flying down to NSW from VIC is if they depart Mildura and land at Albury which is not the case here.

I am not one of those people.

We will fly to pick up the car and drive it back mate! Up down or whereever

I was just being a dick to amuse myself.

If you are interstate, organise an inspection of the vehicle by a qualified person (local dealership, mobile mechanic, etc)
Talk to the seller and arrive on a price you are both happy with (remember to subtract the rego refund)
Organise payment options that you both agree with. (Cash, bank cheque, EFT)
Don’t get suckered into a “deposit” or only leave enough that you are happy to lose (ie; $0)
Pay for the car only when you can physically see it.
    Organise an Ureg. Vehicle Permit
    Organise some insurance
    Drive it home
    Get a RWC completed
Go to VicRoads and fill in the appropriate paperwork
    Pay your registration fees
    Put number plates on car
    Enjoy

      Legend! Thank you!

Oh crap. I forgot the most important part… get a PPSR check done on the vehicle to make sure it isn’t encumbered, written off or stolen. This step should slot in before handing over any money.

I looked for a used car for 6 weeks in Sydney only saw crap and spoke to idiots who never service. I flew to Melbourne last week, similar story to NSW, but after 6 days put a deposit on a car. I am doing everything in person. Be warned so many sellers selling on behalf of someone else, too easy to get scammed unless u do it in person.

    • For some reason, the car you want at the right price is never in your state- it's an unwritten rule.

you stayed in Melbourne for a week just to buy a car?

    • Tempted to do the same. For some reason, NSW cars for same XYZ model is a few $k's more…
Maybe it's because they're all a1 mechanical, immaculate condition, female only, non smoker…
Or every flog trying to outsell their next door neighbour for the lolz

I've done this twice i.e. buy a private car in NSW for use in VIC. Easiest way to go is to just drive the car down from NSW to VIC with NSW plates and then transfer the vehicle over to VIC rego in Victoria at any VicRoads office (suggest you book in an appointment). The seller needs to transfer the vehicle and NSW rego over to your name prior to you taking ownership of the vehicle. At the VicRoads appointment, you can also surrender your NSW plates at VicRoads and they'll give you a surrender receipt.

Now, you can claim back the unused NSW rego but I didn't bother, it's not much considering their equivalent of TAC is actually paid separately to the rego.

    • correct. only that they don't transfer the rego (just submit a disposal notification, as it can't be transferred to interstate owners) and secondly you can claim for both the rego and then seperately with the CTP provider for two refunds (again the amount is pretty paltry but worth if it has more than 6 months rego, which this does)

    • Won't you need to show a Victorian RWC issued in the last 30 days to VicRoads as well?

      • Yes… sorry.. forgot to mention this

  • I've purchased interstate before to brought it back to VIC.

Agree with seller on price- ask seller to factor in cancellation and refund of registration (this requires a bit of trust). I made this mistake, as the registration wasn't in my name, I personally couldn't request a refund $500 down the drain. A Hole seller wouldn't help me get a refund after the sale.

Check if the car has finance. If finance, get a pay out figure for specified date.

Go with seller to your bank, so seller can see that you have made a real time payment of cleared funds and will hand you the keys. Or seller agrees to bank cheque.

Of if car has finance, pay out finance company at bank and then transfer balance to seller.

    Get insurance.

Drive back to Melbourne and get a RWC and Registration.

Send back number plates to NSW for seller to get a refund.

FYI- I didn't purchase the car from NSW, so refund of registration could be slightly different.

    • A Hole seller

I purchased a hole from a guy on gumtree once. It was a scam. Lost $500.

      • But Dale dug a hole!

If you want, I'll transfer the SUV to the wreckers for you for free

  • Thank you all!

  • HI all, thought id add to this rather then start a new, very similar thread.

Just wanted to confirm a couple of points (im looking to buy a car thats in tassie and drive it back - via spirit of tasmania boat - to melbourne). Its current registered in tassie until June next year.

I know i need to get a roadworthy here and book an appt at Vicroads. I gather i will have to pay the stamp duty here in Vic (around $1500) as well as the rego fees.

Do i need to do anything in Tassie before i leave? Any paperwork or transfer at their version of vicroads? What sort of fees do i pay there (if any)?
Once registered in VIC, do i need to keep and dispose of the tassie plates? I read above that the remaining tassie rego can be claimed back, but apparently i wont be able to get the money due to it not being in my name there….is that right?

    Thanks for the help
