Where Can I Get Broken Electronics?

I'm trying to learn to repair and restore electronics. I've worked in IT for 5 years and have some practice with fault-finding and fixing laptops and desktops but I'm looking to branch out with phones, consoles, TVs etc. Other than dumpster diving, are there any good places I could check?

Kerbside clean-up is coming up in my area so I'll be roaming the streets looking for goodies.

Cheers

Local Facebook groups have a whole bunch of people giving stuff away. The “good karmas” and the “hard rubbish rescues” are the best.

    • thanks! I'll take a look!

    Marketplace.
Tonnes of TV's with failed motherboards that probably just need a capacitor or semiconductor changed out.

Some local councils allow you to dispose of electronics. Maybe they might let you back up your trailer and take it off their hands as well?

    • Yeah I'll give the council a call and ask. Maybe the dump works two ways, lol

      • the dump and pump?

I asked at my local transfer station one day if I could take anything, they said go for it. Grabbed a perfectly fine iMac and what looked like a brand new Vega 64 (works fine, still had the HDMI covers on it).

      The stuff people throw away…

      • Lucky you. What is a local transfer station?

It's the local tip which they sort stuff before sending it to recycling or a much bigger tip where they permanently bury it.

Go on FB Marketplace and find giveaway CRT TVs that aren't working, fix then sell to retro gamers?

Definitely hoping to crack the retro gaming scene. People spend a lot of money on nostalgia

Yep was looking at listings for old Sony CRTs this morning randomly, most are listed between $500-$2k!

I might avoid messing around inside CRTs unless you know what you're doing…

FB and gumtree just search for "faulty" "repair" "for parts"

      Or "lightly used"

There's a huge big bin for electronics collection out the front of some bunnings..

Not sure if you're allowed to help yourself though.

So you don't hurt yourself then sue Bunnings
